Etihad Airways web check-in
When check-in opens and closes, and why it sometimes refuses your booking.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Etihad Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Etihad online check-in opens 30 hours before departure and stays open until one hour before the scheduled departure time, at etihad.com or in the Etihad app. You choose a seat, clear passport and visa checks through Auto Doc Check, and download a boarding pass, then drop bags at the airport. When Etihad online check-in opens and when it shuts
Etihad's published window for checking in on etihad.com or in its app is from 30 hours before the scheduled departure time until one hour before it. That is a narrower opening than several Gulf and European carriers offer, and it is the number to plan around.
You will still find pages quoting 48 hours. Some of those are outdated, and some are describing a different product entirely — Abu Dhabi's off-airport city and home check-in services do open a full 24 hours out but close far earlier, four or five hours before departure rather than one. Do not let a 48-hour figure on a third-party site convince you that a boarding pass will be waiting two days ahead.
| Check-in channel | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| Online at etihad.com | 30 hours before departure | 1 hour before departure |
| Etihad app | 30 hours before departure | 1 hour before departure |
| Airport counters, most airports | 4 hours before departure | See deadline table below |
| Abu Dhabi city check-in, Cruise Terminal and Mussafah | 24 hours before departure | 4 hours before departure |
| Abu Dhabi city check-in, Al Ain | 24 hours before departure | 7 hours before departure |
| Home check-in, Abu Dhabi | Bookable from 24 hours out | 5 hours before departure |
The one-hour close is a system cut-off, not a courtesy. Once it passes, the only route left is a staffed counter, and at that point you are also close to the airport check-in deadline itself.
How to check in online with Etihad, step by step
The retrieval details are the same ones the Manage my booking panel uses: your last name exactly as it appears on the ticket, plus either your trip reference or your 13-digit e-ticket number. Signing in to Etihad Guest works too, provided the booking is attached to the account.
The sequence runs: retrieve the booking, confirm which passengers on the reference are travelling, complete the passport and visa fields, accept the dangerous-goods and baggage declarations, choose or confirm seats, then generate the boarding pass. Etihad will offer it as a download, an email, or a pass you can save to your phone's wallet.
Two habits save trouble. Check in for each passenger you actually intend to fly rather than accepting the whole reference by default, because checking in a passenger who then does not travel creates a no-show that is messier to unwind than an uncompleted check-in. And generate the boarding pass at the end rather than closing the browser once the seat is confirmed — a checked-in passenger without a pass still has to queue.
Auto Doc Check: clearing your documents before you leave home
Etihad's name for its document verification step is Auto Doc Check, and it is the part of online check-in that most often decides whether you get a boarding pass or a "see an agent" message.
The system validates your passport details, expiry date, nationality and any visa or travel authorisation required by the destination and by any country you transit. When it clears, the boarding pass issues and you go straight to bag drop. When it cannot — because the destination requires a physical document check, because a visa cannot be verified electronically, or because the details entered do not match the passport — Etihad holds the boarding pass for a staffed counter. That is a deliberate safeguard, not a fault.
Enter names and numbers exactly as printed in the passport's machine-readable zone, including middle names where the ticket carries them. A single transposed digit in a passport number is the most common reason an otherwise valid booking refuses to check in online.
What you can do inside Etihad online check-in — and what you cannot
Online check-in is not just a boarding pass generator; several paid and unpaid services sit inside the same flow.
| Task | Available during Etihad online check-in |
|---|---|
| Choose or change a seat | Yes, subject to fare rules and availability |
| Pay for extra checked baggage | Yes, but the discounted online rate closes 30 hours before departure |
| Add or amend an Etihad Guest number | Yes |
| Add a special meal | No — meals require at least 24 hours' notice |
| Request wheelchair assistance | No — assistance requires at least 48 hours' notice |
| Change your flight | No — that is a Manage my booking task |
| Bid for an upgrade | Separate tool, open until 4 hours before departure |
| Check in an unaccompanied minor | No — airport counter only |
The timing trap is the baggage one. Extra allowance bought online is discounted, and Etihad closes that discounted window 30 hours before departure — the very moment online check-in opens. Buy bags before you check in, not during, or you pay airport rates for the same kilos.
When Etihad will not issue an online boarding pass
Certain bookings are routed to a counter by design, and knowing which ones in advance changes what time you leave for the airport.
Unaccompanied minors cannot be checked in online at all; Etihad requires them at an airport check-in desk at least two hours before departure, with the accompanying adult present. Passengers whose documents Auto Doc Check cannot verify are held for a manual check. Bookings where the operating carrier is a partner airline rather than Etihad are handled by that airline's own system, so an EY flight number alone does not guarantee an Etihad check-in page.
Other common blockers are mundane. A ticket that has not been issued cannot be checked in. A surname entered without a hyphen or second element that appears on the ticket will not retrieve the booking. A group booking loaded as a single contract may not open to individual passengers. And a passenger who has already been checked in by an agent at a city check-in desk will find the online option closed, because the check-in has already happened.
The airport deadlines that survive online check-in
Checking in online does not move the airport clock. Etihad publishes separate deadlines, and they are earlier than most people expect on US-bound flights.
| Situation | Etihad's published deadline |
|---|---|
| Airport check-in opens, most airports | 4 hours before departure |
| Check-in deadline, Economy | 60 minutes before departure |
| Check-in deadline, Business and First | 45 minutes before departure |
| Check-in deadline, direct flights to the United States | 2 hours before departure |
| Unaccompanied minor, airport check-in | At least 2 hours before departure |
| Report at the boarding gate | At least 45 minutes before departure |
| Boarding gate closure | Widely reported at 20 minutes before departure |
Two consequences follow. First, an Economy passenger with a bag to drop on a US-bound flight must be at the counter two hours out even with a boarding pass already on the phone. Second, Etihad's conditions allow it to cancel your reserved space and offload your checked baggage if you do not reach the gate on time — so a boarding pass in hand is not a seat held indefinitely.
Abu Dhabi's off-airport options: city check-in, Skypark and home check-in
Departing Zayed International, Etihad offers something almost no other carrier does at its hub: check in, hand over your bags and collect boarding passes before you ever reach the terminal, through its named partner Morafiq.
| Option | Where and when | Published cost |
|---|---|---|
| City check-in, Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal (Mina Zayed) | Open around the clock; 24 to 4 hours before departure | AED 35 adult, AED 25 child up to 12, AED 15 infant up to 2 |
| City check-in, Mussafah | 24 to 4 hours before departure | Same published desk rates |
| City check-in, Al Ain | 24 to 7 hours before departure | Same published desk rates |
| City check-in, ADNEC | Roughly 9am to 9pm | Same published desk rates |
| City check-in, Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre | At the Etihad ticketing office | Same published desk rates |
| Skypark | 24 to 4 hours before departure | Includes two hours' free Skypark parking, plus a current promotion of 2,500 Etihad Guest Miles or 5kg extra baggage |
| Home check-in via Morafiq | Within about 50km of the airport, non-transit guests only; 24 hours to 5 hours before departure | From AED 185 for up to two bags, extra bags from AED 35; packages vary |
Home check-in is complimentary for guests in The Residence and First Deluxe, and Etihad Guest members have been able to select it as one of their Custom Benefits. Free parking is offered at the Cruise Terminal, Mussafah and Al Ain sites.
Self-service bag drop and kiosks at Zayed International
If you have already checked in online, the fastest path through the terminal is the automated bag drop rather than a counter. Etihad's own description of the machines is that a guest can retrieve the booking, print a bag tag and process the bags in under two minutes, and that boarding passes can be collected in under a minute.
The practical order is: check in online during the 30-hour window, download the boarding pass, arrive with bags already weighed at home, apply the tag at the machine and place the bag on the belt. What defeats the machine is an overweight bag, an odd-shaped item that needs the out-of-gauge counter, a bag containing something requiring inspection, or a document flag Auto Doc Check could not clear.
Etihad expanded these facilities as passenger numbers grew at its Zayed International base, and adds seasonal capacity — including early check-in facilities during peak holiday periods — so what is open in late December is not always open in February. Confirm before you build a tight connection around it.
Agent-issued tickets, codeshares and getting it checked before you fly
Check-in is an airline service rather than a ticket transaction, which is why it behaves differently from a change or a refund. Even where a travel agency issued the ticket, you can normally still check in on etihad.com yourself, choose a seat and download a boarding pass, exactly as a direct booker would. What the agency's ticketing authority governs is reissues and refunds, not boarding passes.
The exception is the operating carrier. On a sector Etihad markets but a partner flies, check-in happens in the partner's system under their rules and their deadlines, and their boarding pass is the one that counts at the gate. On a multi-carrier itinerary, expect to check in twice.
Where Airlaza issues the ticket, we confirm in writing which sectors are Etihad-operated, which check-in channel applies to each, and what the document requirements are for the route before you travel — so the first time you learn about a visa check is not at a bag drop machine at 4am. No card details are taken on this site.
Frequently asked questions
What time does Etihad online check-in open?
Etihad opens online check-in 30 hours before the scheduled departure time, on etihad.com and in the Etihad app. Older third-party pages quoting 48 hours are describing either an outdated rule or Abu Dhabi's city and home check-in services, which open 24 hours out but close much earlier.
When does Etihad check-in close?
Online check-in closes one hour before scheduled departure. At the airport, Etihad's check-in deadline is 60 minutes before departure in Economy and 45 minutes in Business and First, extending to two hours for direct flights to the United States. Gate reporting is required 45 minutes before departure.
How do I check in online with Etihad Airways?
Go to etihad.com or open the Etihad app, enter your last name with either your trip reference or 13-digit ticket number, confirm the travelling passengers, complete the passport and visa fields for Auto Doc Check, choose your seat, then download or save the boarding pass before closing the page.
Can I check in online for an Etihad flight to the United States?
Yes, within the same 30-hour to one-hour window, and Auto Doc Check will validate your travel authorisation electronically. The airport deadline is what changes: Etihad's check-in deadline on direct flights to the United States is two hours before departure, so allow extra time for bag drop.
Why can't I check in online with Etihad?
Common causes: the surname does not match the ticket exactly, the passport number was mistyped, the ticket was never issued, the sector is operated by a partner airline rather than Etihad, or Auto Doc Check needs to see a visa physically. Unaccompanied minors are excluded from online check-in entirely.
Do I need to print my Etihad boarding pass?
Not usually. Etihad issues the pass as a download, an email or a mobile pass you can save to your phone's wallet, and the automated bag drop machines will reprint one. Where Auto Doc Check cannot verify your documents, no pass issues in any format until an agent checks them.
Can I choose my seat during Etihad online check-in?
Yes, subject to what your fare allows and what is left. Comfort and Deluxe fares include standard seat selection; other fares pay, and extra-legroom seats are chargeable unless your fare or Etihad Guest tier covers them. Waiting until check-in rarely improves the choice on a full flight.
What time does Etihad airport check-in open?
At most airports Etihad opens counters four hours before scheduled departure. At Abu Dhabi you can start much earlier off-airport: city check-in desks at the Cruise Terminal, Mussafah, ADNEC and Madinat Zayed accept passengers from 24 hours out, and Al Ain from 24 hours until seven hours before departure.
What is Etihad home check-in?
Home check-in sends Etihad's partner Morafiq to your home, office or hotel within roughly 50km of Zayed International to check you in, tag and collect your bags and hand over boarding passes. It is bookable from 24 hours to five hours before departure, from AED 185, and covers non-transit departures only.
Can I check in online if a travel agent booked my Etihad flight?
Yes. Check-in is an airline service, not a ticket transaction, so an agency-issued ticket checks in on etihad.com like any other. What the agency retains is the authority to reissue or refund the ticket. On partner-operated sectors, check in through the airline actually flying you.
