Etihad Airways cancellation and refund

What's refundable, what isn't, and how the fare family decides it.

Airline · Etihad Airways (EY) Last reviewed · 26 Aug 2026 Reviewed by · Airlaza premium travel desk

Note

Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Etihad Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.

Etihad refunds any booking cancelled within 24 hours of purchase in full, provided the flight departs at least seven days later — no fare-brand exception. After that window, refund eligibility depends entirely on the fare you bought: Flex tickets are fully refundable, non-refundable fares return only government taxes. The 24-hour rule, precisely

Etihad's 24-hour cancellation policy is a genuine, no-questions-asked window, but it comes with two conditions that are easy to miss reading the marketing summary rather than the fine print.

ConditionRequirement
Cancellation windowWithin 24 hours of the original booking
Departure requirementFlight must depart 7 or more days from the booking date
Applies toDirect bookings made with Etihad
Refund scopeFull fare, plus unused ancillaries bought in the same transaction
Fare brand restrictionNone — applies even to fares otherwise marked non-refundable

Both conditions have to hold at once. A ticket bought at 2pm Tuesday for a flight departing the following Monday is inside 24 hours but not seven days out, so the rule does not apply. The same ticket bought for a flight three weeks away qualifies fully, even if it was sold as a non-refundable Deal or Saver fare. This is the one moment in the entire fare structure where the brand name on your ticket does not matter.

Refund eligibility after the 24-hour window

Once 24 hours has passed, Etihad's own fare rules take over completely, and they differ sharply by brand.

Fare situationWhat you can recover
Fully flexible fares (Flex, Business Deluxe, First)Fare refunded per the fare rules, cancellation fee may apply
Semi-flexible fares (Classic, Business Comfort)Partial refund after a cancellation fee, per fare rules
Non-refundable fares (Deal, Saver, Business Value)Only government taxes refunded, fare amount forfeited
Cancellation within 96 hours of departureAn additional fee on top of any standard cancellation charge
Multiple fare types on one itineraryThe most restrictive fare rule on the booking governs the whole ticket

The multi-segment rule catches round-trip and connecting bookings especially. If your outbound leg was booked on a flexible fare and your return on a non-refundable one, Etihad applies the more restrictive rule to the entire ticket rather than treating each segment independently — so mixing fare brands to save money on one leg can remove the flexibility you thought you had on the other.

Before you fly: cancelling at etihad.com/manage

StepWhat happens
Where to startetihad.com/manage, or by phone
What you needBooking reference and the surname on the ticket
Timing limitRefund requests generally accepted up to two hours before departure
ConditionMust not already be checked in for the flight
After submissionA refund reference is issued, status trackable at etihad.com/manage/refund

That two-hour cut-off is a hard deadline, not a guideline — once you have checked in, or the two-hour window has closed, Etihad treats the booking as a no-show rather than a cancellation, and no-show terms are consistently worse than a timely cancellation under almost every fare brand. If your plans change, cancel or start the process before you check in, even if you are unsure whether you will actually travel.

The 2026 change-fee waiver, and what it does not cover

Etihad has, at various points, run a policy waiving the change service fee for one date change per ticket across Economy, Business and First public fare brands, reported to run into 2027. This is worth understanding precisely, because it is regularly misquoted as a general cancellation waiver.

What the waiver coversWhat it does not cover
The flat change service fee itselfAny fare difference between old and new dates
One date change per ticketA second or subsequent change on the same ticket
Economy, Business and First public faresCancellation and refund rules, which stay as booked
Rebooking to a new dateRerouting to a different origin or destination

A waived change fee is not a waived cancellation fee, and it is not a refund mechanism. If you need to cancel rather than move your date, this waiver does not apply to your situation at all — you are still working under the standard refund-eligibility table above. Confirm the waiver's current end date against your own fare rules before relying on it, since the airline has adjusted these promotions before.

Death or serious illness: the bereavement exception

CircumstanceEtihad's treatment
Death of the passenger or an immediate family memberChange and refund fees waived
DocumentationOfficial supporting documents required
ScopeApplies to change fees and cancellation/refund fees
Fare differenceGenerally still applies where a fare difference exists

This exception exists across most full-service carriers in some form, and Etihad's version removes the fee rather than the fare difference. Contact Etihad directly, or Airlaza if we issued your ticket, with the documentation ready before you attempt the change online — bereavement waivers are typically processed manually rather than through the self-service Manage Booking flow.

Award ticket cancellations

Ticket typeHow refunds work
Cash-paid ticketsGoverned by the fare rules above
Etihad Guest award ticketsMiles redeposit and cash refund governed by a separate, published award fee schedule
Award ticket cancellation feeSet independently of cash fare rules and has changed more than once

Award tickets are worth flagging on their own because Etihad's mileage redemption fees have moved several times in recent years and are reported to run notably higher than they once did. If you booked with Etihad Guest miles, check the current award cancellation terms in your account before cancelling — do not assume the cash-fare refund table above applies to a miles booking.

Getting a refund through the agency

If the agency issued your Etihad ticket, cancellation and refund requests go through us rather than directly to the airline, and we confirm the applicable fare rule — 24-hour window, fare-brand refund tier or bereavement exception — in writing before anything is submitted. This avoids the most common refund dispute, which is a passenger assuming their fare was more flexible than it actually was. No card details are taken on this site, and any refund due is processed back through the original payment method.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etihad have a 24-hour cancellation policy?

Yes. Bookings cancelled within 24 hours of purchase get a full refund, including any unused ancillaries bought in the same transaction, as long as the flight departs seven or more days after the booking date. This applies even to fares marketed as non-refundable, and needs no special request beyond cancelling in time.

What happens if I cancel an Etihad flight after 24 hours?

Refund eligibility then follows your fare brand. Flex and fully flexible business and First fares refund per their rules, sometimes with a cancellation fee. Semi-flexible fares refund partially after a fee. Non-refundable fares such as Deal or Saver return only government taxes, with the fare amount forfeited.

How do I cancel an Etihad flight and request a refund?

Go to etihad.com/manage, enter your booking reference and surname, and select the cancel or refund option. Requests are generally accepted up to two hours before departure, provided you have not already checked in. Track the outcome afterward at etihad.com/manage/refund using your refund reference.

Does Etihad charge a fee to change my flight date?

Etihad has waived the flat change service fee for one date change per ticket across Economy, Business and First public fares, reported to run into 2027. This covers only the service fee — any fare difference between your old and new date still applies, and it is not a cancellation waiver.

What is Etihad's non-refundable fare policy?

Non-refundable fares, such as Economy Deal or Business Value, return only the government taxes portion of your ticket if cancelled outside the 24-hour window. The base fare is forfeited. Etihad applies this at the ticket level, and a mixed-fare itinerary follows the rule of its most restrictive fare.

Is there an extra fee for cancelling close to departure?

Yes. Cancelling or changing within 96 hours of your scheduled departure adds a further fee on top of any standard cancellation or change charge under your fare rules. This close-in fee applies regardless of fare brand, so cancel earlier where possible if a refund matters to you.

Can I get a refund if a family member dies?

Etihad waives change and cancellation fees where the passenger or an immediate family member has died, on presentation of official documentation. A fare difference may still apply where relevant. Contact Etihad directly, or the agency if we issued the ticket, with documents ready, since this is handled manually rather than online.

Can I cancel an Etihad award ticket booked with miles?

Yes, but award tickets run on a separate, independently published cancellation and redeposit fee schedule rather than the cash-fare refund rules. These fees have changed more than once in recent years. Check your current award terms inside your Etihad Guest account before cancelling a miles booking.

What happens if I miss my Etihad flight without cancelling?

Once check-in has closed or you have not cancelled within the two-hour pre-departure window, Etihad treats the booking as a no-show, which carries worse terms than a timely cancellation under almost every fare brand. Cancel or contact Etihad before that cut-off, even if you are unsure about travelling.

Can the agency cancel my Etihad ticket and get my refund?

If the agency issued your ticket, yes — contact us and we confirm which refund rule applies to your specific fare in writing, then submit the cancellation on your behalf. This avoids disputes over fare flexibility. No card details are taken on this site, and refunds return through your original payment method.
