Etihad Airways seat selection
When seats are free, when they cost, and how Etihad Guest status changes it.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Etihad Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Etihad seat selection is included free on Business Comfort, Business Deluxe and First fares, and on Economy Flex; it is a paid add-on on Economy Deal, Saver and Classic unless status or a Custom Benefit covers it. Call Airlaza on +1-888-890-4009 and we will confirm which applies to your specific booking.

Who gets free seat selection, by fare and cabin
The starting question on every Etihad booking is not "can I pick a seat" — you almost always can — but "will Etihad charge me for it." That answer is set entirely by the fare brand printed on your ticket.
| Fare or cabin | Seat selection |
|---|---|
| Economy Deal | Chargeable |
| Economy Saver | Chargeable |
| Economy Classic | Chargeable |
| Economy Flex | Included free |
| Business Value | Chargeable |
| Business Comfort | Included free |
| Business Deluxe | Included free |
| First | Included free |
The pattern repeats across cabins: the entry-level brand in each cabin — Deal in Economy, Value in Business — charges for seat selection, while the mid and top brands include it. If seat choice matters to you and you are deciding between Economy Classic and Flex, or Business Value and Comfort, the included seat selection is one of the concrete differences that can make the higher brand worth the extra fare, not just a marketing label.
How much a paid seat costs
| Seat category | How Etihad prices it |
|---|---|
| Standard seat | Priced at the point of selection, varies by flight and cabin |
| Extra-legroom or preferred seat | Priced higher than a standard seat, shown at selection |
| Exit-row seat | Subject to age and mobility eligibility, priced at selection |
| Bulkhead or front-of-cabin | Often priced at a premium where offered |
| Currency and amount | Set per market and route, not published as one global figure |
Etihad does not publish a single worldwide price list for seat selection — the fee is calculated for your specific flight, cabin and seat type at the moment you choose it, whether at booking, in Manage My Booking, or at check-in. If price matters more than a specific seat, note that seats generally get more expensive as the flight fills, so selecting early in the process tends to cost less than waiting until closer to departure.
Free seat selection through Etihad Guest status
Etihad Guest membership status can remove the seat-selection fee even on a fare brand that would otherwise charge for it, through the programme's Core and Custom Benefits structure.
| Tier | Free seat selection benefit |
|---|---|
| Silver | Choose seats as a Custom Benefit selection, limited count |
| Gold | Choose more seats as a Custom Benefit selection than Silver |
| Platinum | Extra-legroom seat selection available as a Custom Benefit, largest allowance |
| Bronze | No automatic free seat-selection benefit |
Custom Benefits are chosen once per membership year rather than applied automatically to every flight, so a Gold member who has already used their annual selections on something else — extra baggage, for example — does not get free seating as a fallback. Check which Custom Benefits you have active for the current membership year before assuming status alone guarantees a free seat on a given flight.
Business Studio and First: seat selection within the cabin
Because Business Comfort, Business Deluxe and First all include seat selection, the practical question in premium cabins is less about paying and more about which specific seat within the cabin to choose, since the fare brand does not distinguish between seat positions.
| Cabin consideration | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Staggered Business Studio (A380, 777, 787) | Alternate rows face forward and backward; forward-facing rows report longer beds |
| A350-1000 Elevation | Fully forward-facing, so orientation is not a factor to select around |
| A321LR business | Reverse herringbone, single-aisle layout with fewer seat choices overall |
| First Apartments and Residence | Fixed suite assignments, limited by cabin size |
On the staggered layouts, choosing a forward-facing row is the single most valuable free decision available in the seat map, since it does not cost extra on a fare that already includes selection — it is simply a matter of picking the right row number rather than paying more. Etihad's seat map does not always label orientation obviously, so cross-checking the aircraft's seat map against a specialist review site before selecting is worth the extra few minutes.
When you can select a seat, and what happens if you don't
| Moment | What applies |
|---|---|
| At booking | Seat map available immediately for most fares |
| In Manage My Booking | Editable up until check-in opens, subject to fare rules |
| At online or airport check-in | Remaining unassigned seats allocated automatically if you have not chosen |
| Codeshare or partner-operated flights | Seat selection may be limited or unavailable through Etihad's own system |
If you never actively choose a seat, Etihad assigns one automatically at check-in from whatever remains unallocated, at no charge — the fee only applies to choosing in advance from the full seat map, not to receiving a seat at all. This is the fallback worth knowing if you are travelling on a Deal fare and do not want to pay: skip selection and accept whatever the system allocates, though there is no guarantee of finding travelling companions seated together this way.
Families and adjacent seating
| Situation | Etihad's general approach |
|---|---|
| Infants and young children | Airlines generally attempt to seat accompanying adults nearby |
| Guaranteed adjacent seating | Not confirmed as automatic on every fare brand |
| Best practice | Select seats together in advance rather than relying on automatic allocation |
Do not assume that booking multiple passengers on the same reservation guarantees adjacent seats without actively selecting them, particularly on the fare brands that charge for seat choice. Where a family is travelling with young children on a Deal or Saver fare, it is worth paying the seat-selection fee for at least the accompanying adult seats rather than risking an automatic allocation that splits the group across the cabin.
Booking through Airlaza and confirming your seat cost
Because seat-selection pricing depends on fare brand, cabin, specific flight and Etihad Guest status all at once, the only reliable way to know your cost before paying is to check it against your actual booking rather than a generic table. When the agency books your Etihad ticket, we confirm in writing whether seat selection is included in your fare or chargeable, and flag it before you pay so there are no surprises at check-in. No card details are taken on this site.

Frequently asked questions
Is seat selection free on Etihad?
It depends on your fare. Economy Flex, Business Comfort, Business Deluxe and First include free seat selection. Economy Deal, Saver, Classic and Business Value charge a fee shown at the point of selection. Etihad Guest Silver, Gold and Platinum members can also unlock free selection through their annual Custom Benefits.
How much does Etihad charge to choose a seat?
Etihad does not publish one global price. The fee is calculated per flight, cabin and seat type at the moment you select, and tends to rise as the flight fills, so selecting early usually costs less than waiting. Extra-legroom and exit-row seats are typically priced above standard seats.
Can Etihad Guest members select seats for free?
Yes, as a Custom Benefit chosen once per membership year rather than applied automatically to every flight. Silver members get a limited number of free selections, Gold more, and Platinum can select extra-legroom seats specifically. Check your active Custom Benefits for the current year before assuming coverage.
What happens if I don't select a seat on Etihad?
Etihad assigns you a seat automatically, at no charge, from whatever remains unallocated at check-in. The fee applies only to choosing a seat in advance from the full seat map, not to receiving one at all. Automatic allocation gives no guarantee of sitting with travelling companions.
Which Etihad seats have the longest bed in business class?
On the staggered Business Studio fitted to the A380, 777-300ER and most 787s, forward-facing rows report longer beds than rearward-facing rows in the same cabin, at no extra fare. The A350-1000's Elevation seat is fully forward-facing, so orientation is not a factor there.
Does Etihad guarantee families sit together?
Not automatically on every fare. Airlines generally try to seat young children near an accompanying adult, but adjacent seating is not confirmed as guaranteed across all Etihad fare brands. Actively selecting seats together in advance, even paying the fee where required, is the more reliable approach for families.
Can I change my Etihad seat after booking?
Yes, through Manage My Booking at etihad.com up until check-in opens, subject to your fare rules and seat availability on that flight. Changing to a different seat category may involve an additional charge if the new seat is priced higher than the one you originally held.
Is seat selection included in Business Value fares?
No. Business Value is Etihad's entry-level business fare and charges for seat selection, unlike Business Comfort and Business Deluxe, which include it. If choosing your seat in advance matters, compare the seat-selection fee on Value against the fare difference to Comfort before booking.
Can I select an exit-row seat on Etihad?
Exit-row seats are available for selection but are restricted to passengers who meet age and physical ability criteria for assisting in an emergency, consistent with standard airline safety practice. They are typically priced as a preferred or extra-legroom category rather than a standard seat.
Does the agency tell me if my Etihad fare includes free seat selection?
Yes. Because inclusion depends on your fare brand, cabin and any Etihad Guest status, the agency confirms in writing whether your specific booking includes free seat selection or carries a fee, before you pay for the ticket. No card details are taken on this site.
