Etihad Airways special meals

Which meal codes Etihad carries, the deadline to order, and how to request one.

Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Etihad Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.

Etihad Airways takes special meal requests at least 24 hours before departure, through etihad.com/manage, at the booking stage, or via your travel agent. Medical, religious and vegetarian meals are all catered. There is no need to request halal — Etihad states all food served on board is prepared in strict compliance with halal regulations. How to request an Etihad special meal, and by when

Etihad accepts a meal request through three routes: at the point of booking, afterwards in Manage my booking at etihad.com/manage on the Passenger Details page, or through the travel agent who holds the ticket. The airline's own instruction is the same in all three cases — the request must reach it at least 24 hours before the flight, and Etihad does not promise to fulfil anything logged later than that.

That deadline is not a formality. Airline catering is uplifted as a fixed count per flight, built from the passenger manifest at a cut-off point on the ground. A meal that is not in the manifest is not on the aircraft, and cabin crew cannot produce one in the air. This is why "I'll ask the crew when I board" is the single most common way passengers with dietary needs end up eating nothing.

One request covers the whole booking reference by default, so if two people on the same reference need different meals, check that the request has been attached to the right passenger name and not simply to the booking.

Is Etihad food halal? What the airline actually states

This is the most-asked question on the topic and it has a clean answer. Etihad's published position is that all food served on board is prepared in strict compliance with halal regulations and is suitable for Muslim passengers. There is therefore no Muslim meal code to request on Etihad — the standard meal already meets the requirement, in every cabin, on every route.

Two qualifications are worth keeping straight, because they are the airline's own, not ours. First, this covers the food. Alcohol is served on board Etihad as a normal part of the beverage service, and that is separate from how the food is sourced. Second, Etihad does not publish the name of a certifying authority alongside that statement; it describes compliance with halal regulations rather than advertising a specific certification mark. If you need certification documentation for a particular reason, ask Etihad directly rather than assuming from a website.

Passengers connecting onto a partner-operated sector should note that the partner airline's catering standard applies on that leg, not Etihad's.

The Etihad special meal list, by category

Etihad groups its special meals the way most full-service carriers do: medical diets, religious and cultural diets, vegetarian and vegan diets, and meals for children. The codes below are the standard IATA service codes your booking will carry.

CategoryMealCodeWhat it is
MedicalDiabeticDBMLLow sugar, minimal salt, low-fat products, grilled white meat, high-fibre fruit and vegetables
MedicalGluten intolerantGFMLWheat, rye, oats, bran and barley eliminated; for coeliac disease and gluten intolerance

Vegetarian / veganAsian vegetarianAVMLIndian-style spiced vegetarian; usually contains dairy
ChildrenChild mealCHMLMild, unspiced food aimed at ages roughly 2–12
ChildrenBaby mealBBMLBranded pre-packaged infant food

Two codes people search for are not on Etihad's published list: low calorie (LCML) and low salt (LSML). If you need either, the diabetic meal is the closest published equivalent for sugar and fat, and the bland meal for salt and spice — but confirm before you fly rather than assuming a substitution.

The 2-hour-50-minute rule: what disappears on short flights

Etihad ties special meal availability to sector length, and this is where most disappointment comes from. On flights shorter than two hours and 50 minutes, the catering range is cut back sharply.

Sector lengthSpecial meals Etihad will acceptChildren's and babies' meals
Under 2 hours 50 minutesDiabetic (DBML), gluten intolerant (GFML) and low lactose (NLML) onlyNot available
Over 2 hours 50 minutesFull published range, requested 24 hours aheadAvailable, requested 24 hours ahead

Etihad's own trade bulletin puts it plainly: for operational reasons it can no longer cater to some meal requests in Economy on flights under three hours, and where a special meal is unavailable the request comes back with a "NO" status on GDS bookings rather than silently vanishing.

The practical effect on a connecting itinerary is that your meal may load on the long sector and not on the short one. An Abu Dhabi–Delhi or Abu Dhabi–Kuwait leg can fall inside the short-flight band while the long-haul leg into Abu Dhabi does not. Check each sector individually, not the itinerary as a whole.

Children's and babies' meals on Etihad

Etihad caters a child meal and a baby meal, both on the same 24-hour deadline and both restricted to sectors longer than two hours fifty. The child meal is deliberately mild — pasta, meatballs, dairy items and a dessert are typical — rather than a shrunken adult meal.

Age groupWhat Etihad catersBooking notes
Infants under 2Baby meal (BBML), pre-packaged branded infant foodOrder 24 hours ahead; long sectors only
Roughly ages 2–12Child meal (CHML), mild and unspicedOrder 24 hours ahead; long sectors only
Any age, short sectorsNo children's cateringEtihad advises bringing food and snacks on board

Etihad's advice to families flying short sectors is explicit and worth repeating: bring food and snacks with you, because children's meals are not carried on those flights. Bassinets are a separate request again, tied to the infant's size rather than to catering — Etihad's published limits are a baby under 11kg and up to 75cm, subject to availability, and a bassinet request does not carry a meal request with it. Log both.

Medical-diet meals: what each one really contains

The four medical codes solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one is common.

Diabetic (DBML) controls sugar and fat rather than portion size — low sugar, minimal salt, low-fat products, grilled white meat and high-fibre fruit and vegetables. It is not a weight-loss meal.

Gluten intolerant (GFML) removes wheat, rye, oats, bran and barley, and is the correct code for coeliac disease. It is not automatically dairy-free.

Low lactose (NLML) removes milk and milk products. It is not automatically gluten-free. Passengers with both conditions cannot combine two codes on one booking — one code, one tray — so raise it by phone rather than assuming the system will merge them.

Bland (BLML) removes spices, onion and garlic, and is built around easily digested food. It is the usual choice after gastric surgery or during a flare-up of a digestive condition.

None of these is an allergy service. Etihad, like every airline, cannot guarantee an allergen-free cabin environment or a trace-free galley, and a special meal is a dietary accommodation rather than a medical safeguard.

Kosher, Hindu and Jain meals in practice

These three carry the most practical caveats.

Kosher (KSML) is not cooked in Etihad's own kitchens. It is supplied sealed and double-wrapped by an external certified kitchen so it can be heated in a galley oven that is not itself kosher, and the seal should be intact when it reaches you. Because it is externally sourced and shipped to the departure station, it is the meal most exposed to short-notice failure — 24 hours is Etihad's published deadline, but requesting it as early as possible in the booking process is simply sensible.

Hindu non-vegetarian (HNML) is an Indian-style cooked meal containing no beef. It is not a vegetarian meal, which trips people up regularly. If you want Indian-style vegetarian food, the code is AVML.

Vegetarian Jain (VJML) follows Jain dietary rules and excludes root vegetables. It is a distinct code from AVML and the two are not interchangeable.

For any of the three, the safest confirmation is seeing the code against your name in the booking, not a reassurance on a phone call.

What to do if your Etihad special meal is missing

Failures happen, and they happen in three specific places: the request never reached the airline, the sector was too short to carry the meal, or the ticket was serviced by a party that did not pass the code through.

Before departure, open Manage my booking and look for the meal listed against the passenger name. If it is not there, it is not requested. At the airport, the check-in agent can see the service request and, if the flight has not yet been catered, can sometimes still add it. Once boarding starts, that door is shut.

On board, ask the crew as soon as you sit down rather than when the trolley reaches your row. Where a special meal has not loaded, cabin crew can usually assemble something from the standard trolley and the galley stores — bread, fruit, salad components, sealed snacks — and on Etihad the base catering being halal removes one common obstacle. It is a fallback, not a substitute.

Special meals on agent-issued tickets, codeshares and partner flights

A meal request is an airline service rather than a ticket transaction, which is why it behaves differently from a change or a refund. Even on a ticket an agency issued, you can normally still add a meal yourself in Etihad's Manage my booking panel, alongside seats, extra baggage and check-in.

Two situations break that. On a codeshare or partner-operated sector, Etihad's instruction is to contact the operating airline directly — the catering, the code list and the deadlines are theirs, not Etihad's, and an EY flight number does not mean an Etihad galley. And on a group booking, meal codes are usually loaded in bulk by whoever holds the contract, so individual passengers adding requests themselves can create duplicates.

Where Airlaza issued the ticket, we load the meal codes into the booking ourselves, sector by sector, and confirm back in writing which code sits against which passenger on which flight. For a traveller with a religious or medical diet on a multi-sector long-haul itinerary, that written confirmation is the thing worth having. No card details are taken on this site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I request a special meal on Etihad?

Add it at etihad.com/manage on the Passenger Details page, select it while booking, or ask the travel agent holding your ticket. Etihad requires the request at least 24 hours before departure. Confirm afterwards that the meal code appears against the correct passenger name on your booking, not just the reference.

Is Etihad Airways food halal?

Yes. Etihad states that all food served on board is prepared in strict compliance with halal regulations and is suitable for Muslim passengers, so there is no Muslim meal code to request. Alcohol is still served separately as part of the beverage service, and partner-operated sectors follow that airline's catering standard.

What is the deadline for an Etihad special meal request?

At least 24 hours before departure, across every meal type Etihad publishes. Catering counts are fixed from the manifest before the aircraft is loaded, so a later request cannot be guaranteed and crew cannot create a special meal in flight. Earlier is always safer, particularly for kosher.

Does Etihad serve special meals on short flights?

Only three. On sectors under two hours and 50 minutes, Etihad accepts diabetic, gluten intolerant and low lactose requests only, and children's meals are not carried at all. On a connecting itinerary the meal may load on the long leg and not the short one, so check each sector.

Does Etihad have a kosher meal?

Yes, coded KSML. It is supplied by an external certified kitchen, sealed and double-wrapped so it can be heated in a galley oven that is not kosher. Because it is shipped in rather than cooked by Etihad, request it as early in the booking as you can, not at the 24-hour boundary.

What is the difference between Etihad's Hindu meal and Asian vegetarian meal?

The Hindu non-vegetarian meal, HNML, is an Indian-style cooked meal containing no beef — it does contain meat. The Asian vegetarian meal, AVML, is Indian-style spiced vegetarian food that usually contains dairy. They are separate codes and Etihad will not substitute one for the other.

Does Etihad offer a low-calorie meal?

Low calorie, LCML, is not on Etihad's published special meal list, and neither is low salt. The nearest published options are the diabetic meal, which is low in sugar and fat, and the bland meal, which excludes spices, onion and garlic. Confirm before flying rather than assuming a substitution.

Can I get a children's meal on Etihad?

Yes, on flights longer than two hours and 50 minutes, ordered at least 24 hours ahead. Etihad caters a mild child meal for roughly ages two to twelve and a pre-packaged baby meal for infants under two. On shorter sectors no children's catering is carried, so bring food yourself.

What happens if my Etihad special meal is not loaded?

Tell the crew as you board rather than when the trolley arrives. They can usually assemble something from standard stores — bread, fruit, salad, sealed snacks — and Etihad's base catering being halal removes one common obstacle. Check the booking beforehand; a request that is not listed against your name was never made.

Do special meals cost extra on Etihad?

Etihad publishes no charge for special meals in any cabin; they are part of the catering you have already paid for with your fare. What you cannot buy is a late request — the 24-hour deadline and the two hour fifty minute sector rule apply regardless of fare brand, cabin or Etihad Guest tier.
