Etihad Airways baggage allowance

Your allowance follows the fare and route — Value fares most of all.

Airline · Etihad Airways (EY) Last reviewed · 26 Aug 2026 Reviewed by · Airlaza premium travel desk

Note

Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Etihad Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.

Etihad's baggage allowance is not one number — it is set by your fare brand, your route and, for flights to and from the US and Canada, a different counting system entirely. Economy Deal fares can carry zero checked bags while Flex fares carry two. Call Airlaza on +1-888-890-4009 for a written quote that states your exact allowance.

Two systems: weight concept and piece concept

Etihad runs two separate baggage rulebooks depending on where you are flying, and confusing them is the single most common baggage mistake on this airline.

On flights to and from the United States and Canada, Etihad uses the piece concept: your allowance is a fixed number of bags, each capped at a maximum weight, regardless of how heavy the rest of your luggage is. Everywhere else, Etihad uses the weight concept: your allowance is a single total weight figure set by your fare brand, which you can split across as many bags as you like — provided no single bag exceeds the absolute cap.

The absolute cap matters under both systems. Etihad will not check in a single bag heavier than 32kg on any route, no matter how much allowance remains unused elsewhere in your booking. A passenger with a 40kg total weight allowance still has to split that across at least two bags, because one 40kg case will be refused at the counter.

Cabin baggage: the same on almost every route

Cabin itemEtihad's allowance
Economy cabin bag1 bag, up to 7kg
Business and First cabin bags2 bags, combined up to 12kg
US-departing flights, any cabin1 bag, up to 12kg
Cabin bag maximum size56 x 36 x 23cm
Extra small or personal itemUp to 5kg, maximum 23 x 39 x 19cm
Laptop bag or handbagUsually permitted in addition, subject to check

The US-departure rule is a genuine exception rather than a stricter general limit: flights that begin their journey from the United States get a single 12kg cabin bag across every cabin, rather than the two-bag business allowance used on the rest of the network. If your itinerary starts in America, plan around one bag, not two.

Economy checked baggage by fare brand

Etihad sells four branded Economy fares, and the fare brand rather than the ticket price alone decides whether you get a checked bag at all.

Economy fareChecked baggage
DealNo checked baggage included
SaverOne piece, weight set by route
ClassicOne piece, weight set by route
FlexTwo pieces, weight set by route

Etihad does not publish one fixed kilogram figure across every route for Saver, Classic or Flex — the actual weight is shown against your own itinerary at booking and can vary by region. Passengers who book a Deal fare and only discover at check-in that no bag is included are the most common excess-baggage complaint on this airline, so confirm your fare brand's baggage line before you fly, not after you pack.

Business and First checked baggage

Fare brandChecked baggage system
Business ValueWeight-concept allowance, smallest of the three business brands
Business ComfortWeight-concept allowance, larger than Value
Business DeluxeWeight-concept allowance, largest of the three business brands
FirstWeight-concept allowance, highest tier on the network
US and Canada routes, business and First2 pieces, up to 32kg each

As with Economy, Etihad does not publish one global kilogram number per business fare brand across every route — the figure shown against your own booking, for your own city pair, is the one that applies. What is consistent everywhere is the 32kg single-bag ceiling and the two-piece structure specifically on US and Canada sectors.

Etihad Guest baggage benefits

TierExtra checked baggage
SilverAdditional allowance available as a Custom Benefit selection
GoldAdditional allowance available as a Custom Benefit selection, larger than Silver
PlatinumAdditional allowance available as a Custom Benefit selection, largest of the three
Infant, no own seatSmall allowance plus a collapsible stroller or car seat, free of charge

Etihad Guest members choose their extra-baggage benefit from the Custom Benefits menu once per membership year rather than receiving a fixed kilogram bump automatically, and the exact weight varies between third-party reports. Confirm your own tier's current benefit inside your Etihad Guest account before assuming a specific figure will apply at the airport.

Excess and overweight baggage

SituationWhat Etihad applies
Extra piece beyond your allowanceA per-piece excess fee, shown at booking or check-in
Single bag over 32kgRefused for check-in, must be repacked or split
Bag over the size limit but under 32kgOversize handling fee, varies by route
Prepaying extra weight onlineGenerally cheaper than paying at the airport counter

Excess and overweight rates are set by route and currency and are not published as one worldwide figure, so a per-kilogram price quoted for one region will not hold on another. The reliable pattern across carriers including Etihad is that buying extra weight in advance through Manage My Booking costs meaningfully less than paying the airport rate on the day, so if you know you will be over, add the weight before departure rather than at the counter.

Special items: golf, sports equipment and musical instruments

Etihad accepts sporting equipment and musical instruments as checked or, for smaller instruments, cabin items, but most require advance notice and some carry their own handling terms rather than counting inside your standard allowance.

ItemHow Etihad treats it
Golf equipment, business and FirstOne set up to 15kg, free, additional to your allowance
Golf equipment, EconomyCounted against or added to allowance depending on fare, confirm at booking
Musical instruments, smallMay travel in the cabin as your allowed item, size permitting
Musical instruments, largeChecked, or a seat purchased for cello-sized instruments, advance booking required
Sports equipment generallyAccepted with advance notice, fees vary by item and route

The golf concession in premium cabins is unusually generous by industry standards, but Economy passengers should not assume the same free allowance — golf bags on Economy tickets are more commonly folded into or added onto the existing weight allowance rather than carried entirely free. Book special items in advance through Manage My Booking or by phone; airport-day requests for oversized instruments are the most likely to be refused.

Booking through Airlaza and confirming your allowance

Baggage allowance depends on the fare brand, the route and the passenger's Etihad Guest tier all at once, which is exactly why Etihad does not print one number that applies to everyone. When the agency issues a ticket, we state the checked and cabin allowance for that specific booking in writing alongside the fare rules, so there is no ambiguity to resolve at the airport. Frequently asked questions

What is Etihad's checked baggage allowance?

It depends on your fare brand and route. Economy Deal fares include no checked bag; Saver and Classic include one piece; Flex includes two. Business and First allowances scale up by brand and are shown against your specific booking. No single bag may weigh more than 32kg on any Etihad fare or route.

Does Etihad Economy include a free checked bag?

Only on Saver, Classic and Flex fares. The cheapest Economy fare, Deal, includes no checked baggage at all — you would need to purchase a bag separately. Always check the baggage line shown at booking before assuming your ticket includes a checked piece.

How much does Etihad charge for excess baggage?

Etihad charges a per-piece or per-kilogram excess fee that varies by route and currency, so no single worldwide figure applies. Prepaying extra weight through Manage My Booking is generally cheaper than paying the airport counter rate on the day, so add weight in advance if you know you will exceed your allowance.

What is the difference between weight concept and piece concept on Etihad?

Weight concept, used on most routes, gives you a total kilogram allowance splittable across bags, with no single bag over 32kg. Piece concept, used on flights to and from the US and Canada, gives you a fixed number of bags each capped at a set weight instead of one pooled total.

How many bags can I take to the US on Etihad in Economy?

US and Canada Economy allowances follow the piece concept rather than a weight total, with the number of included pieces and per-bag weight cap set by your fare brand. Business and First on US and Canada routes get two pieces at up to 32kg each. Confirm your Economy fare's exact piece count at booking.

Can I bring golf clubs on Etihad?

Yes. In Business and First, one golf set up to 15kg travels free, in addition to your normal baggage allowance. In Economy, golf equipment is more commonly counted against or added onto your existing weight allowance rather than carried free, so confirm the treatment for your fare before you travel.

Does Etihad Guest membership increase my baggage allowance?

Silver, Gold and Platinum members can select extra checked baggage as one of their Custom Benefit choices, made once per membership year rather than applied automatically. The exact extra weight is shown inside your Etihad Guest account and is not published as one fixed figure across all tiers, so check before you rely on it.

What happens if my bag is over 32kg on Etihad?

Etihad will not check in a single bag heavier than 32kg on any route, regardless of how much unused allowance remains elsewhere in your booking. You would need to repack, remove items or redistribute weight across additional bags before the airline accepts it at the counter.

Can I carry a musical instrument on an Etihad flight?

Small instruments can often travel as your cabin item if they fit the size limits. Larger instruments, including cellos, generally need to be checked or booked into a purchased seat, and Etihad asks for advance notice through Manage My Booking or by phone rather than an airport-day request.

Where can I check my exact Etihad baggage allowance before flying?

Your confirmed allowance is shown in Manage My Booking at etihad.com against your specific fare, route and passenger details, since it depends on all three at once. If the agency issued your ticket, we state your checked and cabin allowance in writing with the booking confirmation, so you do not have to interpret the fare rules yourself.
