Two currencies, five tiers: the shape of Etihad Guest

The single thing that confuses new members is that Etihad Guest runs two mile balances at once, and they behave nothing alike.

Guest Miles are the spending currency. They accumulate in your account, they can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, hotel nights and merchandise, and they can be pooled with family members. Tier Miles are the scoring currency. They only measure how much flying and qualifying activity you have done inside a 12-month membership year, they cannot be spent on anything, and they reset when that year ends.

You earn both from the same flight, but at different rates and under different rules. A promotional bonus might double your Guest Miles and add nothing to your Tier Miles. That is why members regularly reach a large account balance while sitting at Bronze — a big balance is not status, and status is not a balance.

Etihad passed ten million members in the programme, and rebuilt it substantially in June 2024, so any guide written before that date describes a scheme that no longer runs.

The five Etihad Guest tier levels and what each one takes

Status is earned on Tier Miles inside a rolling 12-month membership year, with a minimum portion that must come from actual flying rather than from cards, hotels or shopping partners. That flying minimum is the rule most members miss.

Two points worth reading twice. First, requalifying is cheaper than qualifying at every tier — 20,000 against 25,000 for Silver, 100,000 against 125,000 for Platinum — so holding status costs less than winning it. Second, Emerald sits outside the Tier Mile ladder entirely. It is Etihad's top tier and is reported to run on qualifying spend of USD 150,000 with Etihad over a rolling 12-month period plus an invitation, rather than on miles flown. Etihad does not publish Emerald's criteria the way it publishes the other four, so treat that figure as reported rather than confirmed.

The 25% qualification cut, and when it ends

On 18 March 2026 Etihad Guest cut its tier qualification and requalification requirements by a quarter. It is a genuine, published change rather than a targeted promotion, it needs no registration, and it applies automatically.

The conditions attached matter. Eligibility is set against members holding Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum status as at 23:59 UAE time on 17 March 2026. The offer runs to 31 March 2027 inclusive, and within that period a member can climb more than once — Silver to Gold, then Gold to Platinum — provided each step is completed on or before that date. Emerald is expressly excluded from the reduction.

If you have been three or four sectors short of Gold for two years, this is the window. After 31 March 2027 the standard numbers return.

Core, Custom and Beyond Benefits: the 2024 rebuild

The June 2024 relaunch replaced a fixed benefit list with three layers, and it is the structural change that makes older guides useless.

Core Benefits arrive automatically with the tier — bonus Guest Miles, priority check-in, priority boarding and additional baggage among them. Custom Benefits are chosen by you from a menu, once per membership year. Beyond Benefits unlock when you fly well past your tier threshold and can be given away to someone else.

Platinum and Emerald both carry the 100% bonus. Custom Benefit menus include lounge access for yourself and a guest, extra checked baggage, complimentary seat selection and, at Platinum, extra-legroom Economy seating and First Class lounge access in Abu Dhabi. Selections are reported to be locked once made until your next renewal, with a window of around 30 days after attaining or renewing a tier to choose — so do not leave the email unread.

How you earn Etihad Guest Miles when you fly

Earning is calculated from the distance flown multiplied by a percentage set by the fare you bought, with your tier bonus applied on top. The cabin alone does not decide it: two people sitting side by side in Business, one on a Value fare and one on a Deluxe fare, earn different amounts from the same flight.

Etihad revised its earning percentages, and its own FAQ preserves the old rates for tickets issued before 21 July 2025 — Business Comfort continuing at 200% and First Comfort at 300%. That grandfathering clause is the clearest published evidence that the rates moved on that date, which is exactly why this page does not print a fare-by-fare percentage table. Published figures from third-party guides contradict each other, and an accrual table that is out by 100 percentage points is worse than no table at all. What is not in dispute is the tier bonus: 25% at Silver, 50% at Gold, 100% at Platinum and Emerald, applied to the Guest Miles the fare earns.

Earning outside Etihad: partners and everyday spend

Etihad Guest works with more than 25 airline partners, including American Airlines, Air Canada and Virgin Australia, and quoting your membership number at booking sends the credit to Etihad Guest instead of the operating airline's own scheme. You cannot credit the same flight twice, and the decision is effectively final once the flight has been flown.

Beyond flying, miles accrue through hotel, car hire, retail and co-branded credit card partners, and through Etihad's own miles purchase and transfer routes. This is where the flying minimum bites: card and hotel earning builds a spendable Guest Mile balance but does not satisfy the 10,000, 20,000 or 40,000 flying-mile floor attached to Silver, Gold and Platinum.

One practical constraint on the redemption side. Partner award bookings have generally required a phone call rather than online booking, with American Airlines and Virgin Australia the reported exceptions bookable online. If your plan depends on a specific partner cabin, check bookability before you accumulate towards it.

Spending miles: Saver Award and the any-seat option

In November 2025 Etihad Guest renamed GuestSeat to Saver Award and made a change of real substance alongside it: every seat on board, in every cabin, became bookable with miles.

Two things follow. Award seats are no longer a lottery — if you hold enough miles you can always buy the seat, though at a rate tied to the cash fare rather than the fixed Saver rate. And award bookings now come in the same Value, Comfort and Deluxe brands as cash fares, so the change and cancellation rules on your award depend on the bundle you chose, not on the fact that you paid in miles.

Miles expiry and claiming miles that never arrived

Etihad Guest miles expire on inactivity, and in June 2024 the rule tightened in a way that catches people who thought they were safe.

The June 2024 change is the important one. Before it, a credit card transfer or a miles purchase kept a balance alive indefinitely. Now only a flight does. A member who parks 200,000 miles and stops flying will lose them, whatever else moves through the account.

If miles do not appear, claim through the Claim Missing Miles form in your Etihad Guest account, with your ticket number, flight number and date to hand. Keep the boarding pass until the miles post.

Joining, Family Membership, and getting your number onto the ticket

Joining costs nothing and is done at etihad.com or in the Etihad app. Membership is open from age two, so children can hold their own accounts and earn on their own tickets from the start — worth doing on a family long-haul trip, where four accounts earn four times.

Family Membership is the pooling mechanism. A Family Head aged 21 or over sets it up from within their account and can add up to nine further members, each of whom needs an individual Etihad Guest account first. Pooled miles can then be spent on a single booking by the head, which is how a family reaches a Business Class award that no one member could fund alone. Members can leave after an initial one-month lock-in period.

The mechanical step people forget is the last one: the membership number has to be attached to the booking, with the surname matching the ticket exactly, or the flight simply does not credit.
