Lufthansa seat upgrade

Miles, cash and bid upgrades all work differently — and your fare decides which you can use.

Note

Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Lufthansa. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.

There are four practical ways to upgrade a Lufthansa seat: submit a Bid Upgrade offer up to 49 hours before departure, buy a fixed-price upgrade during online check-in, redeem a Miles & More Upgrade Award, or spend status eVouchers. Each has different eligibility and different deadlines. Airlaza's desk is on +1-888-890-4009, 24/7.

The four routes into a higher Lufthansa cabin

Lufthansa runs several parallel upgrade products, and they do not compete for the same seats in the same way. Understanding which one applies to you saves a lot of wasted effort at the airport.

The distinction that matters most is confirmed versus conditional. A fixed-price upgrade, an Upgrade Award and an eVoucher upgrade all confirm the moment they are processed. A Bid Upgrade does not confirm anything: you are making an offer that Lufthansa may decline, and you will not know until roughly two days before you fly. If you need certainty — a connection, a meeting, a long overnight — bidding is the wrong instrument.

Bid Upgrade: how Lufthansa's offer system works

Lufthansa's offer-based upgrade lets you name a price for the seat rather than accept a published one. You are invited by email on eligible bookings, or you can open the Bid Upgrade page and enter your booking details.

The deadlines are precise and worth writing down. Offers must be submitted at the latest 49 hours before the departure time of the flight segment concerned, and Lufthansa informs you by email 48 hours before scheduled departure whether your offer was accepted. All communication about the offer is by email only — nothing appears in the booking until the outcome is decided.

Lufthansa assesses offers against several criteria: the amount you offered, the amounts other passengers offered, the number of seats available, and the number of passengers in your booking. That last one matters — a party of four is a bigger ask than a solo traveller and is judged as one unit.

Fixed-price upgrades during online check-in

This is the least-known route and often the most useful. When you check in online, Lufthansa may present an upgrade at a fixed price it sets, based on your current travel class and route. There is no bidding and no waiting: you accept the price, pay, and the new cabin is confirmed on the spot.

Lufthansa states that upgrades to Business Class from all Economy fares are available for a fee up to one hour before departure on the flights where it offers them — which makes this the latest-acting upgrade product Lufthansa sells.

Several situations block the offer from appearing at all:

SituationEffect on fixed-price upgrade
Group booking of more than nine passengersNot possible
Any flight segment still unconfirmed or waitlistedNot possible
Chargeable extras booked but not yet paidNot possible
Extras booked that conflict with the upgrade, such as an extra cabin-baggage seatNot possible

If no upgrade offer appears at check-in, do not assume the cabin is full. One unpaid seat reservation elsewhere in the booking is enough to suppress the offer entirely.

Miles & More Upgrade Awards: how the miles are calculated

An Upgrade Award moves an existing paid ticket into a higher cabin using award miles. Two rules govern the price, and neither is a flat rate.

First, the miles depend on the departure and destination regions of the flight and on the booking class of the ticket you already hold. Cheaper booking classes cost more miles to upgrade than expensive ones — the programme deliberately narrows the gap between a discounted ticket and a full one.

Second, Upgrade Award pricing is quoted per flight segment. A return journey costs twice the one-way figure, and a journey with a connection is priced segment by segment, not as one hop.

Two structural limits catch people out. An Upgrade Award moves you up a maximum of two travel classes, counting Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First — so Economy to Business is permitted, Economy to First is not. And a direct Economy-to-Business upgrade is only offered on certain group and partner carriers, among them Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines and LOT Polish Airlines.

eVouchers: the status currency for upgrades

eVouchers are Lufthansa's status-holder upgrade currency, issued by Miles & More rather than bought. Senators receive two on qualification or renewal; HON Circle Members receive four, and the same allocation repeats at each renewal. Further eVouchers can be credited as Extra Benefits once a member reaches certain Qualifying Point or HON Circle Point thresholds in a calendar year.

The trap is booking class. Upgrading from the deepest-discount Economy classes can consume two or even three vouchers where a mid-priced ticket would consume one, so an apparently cheaper ticket can be the expensive choice for a voucher holder. eVouchers can be applied online, by phone through Miles & More, or presented at check-in, which gives them more flexibility than any cash upgrade product.

Which cabin can you actually upgrade into?

Lufthansa's long-haul ladder has four rungs, and not every rung connects to every other one.

FromTo Premium EconomyTo BusinessTo First
EconomyYesYes, on Lufthansa and several group carriersNo — more than two classes
Premium EconomyYesNo — more than two classes for an Upgrade Award
BusinessYes, where First is operated

First Class only exists on part of the fleet, so a Business-to-First upgrade is only a question on aircraft that carry the cabin — currently the Boeing 747-8, Airbus A380, Airbus A340-600 and the Allegris Airbus A350-900. On every other Lufthansa long-haul aircraft, Business is the top cabin and there is nothing above it to buy.

Award access to First has also tightened. Aviation press reported that from 1 June 2026 Lufthansa stopped releasing First Class award space to partner frequent-flyer programmes, leaving Miles & More as the redemption route into the cabin.

What an upgrade changes — and what it does not

An upgrade changes where you sit. It does not rewrite your ticket. Lufthansa is explicit that when a Bid Upgrade offer is accepted, the ticket conditions of your originally booked fare continue to apply — minimum and maximum stay, cancellation rules, rebooking rules and baggage regulations all stay as they were. Upgrading an Economy Light ticket does not turn it into a flexible ticket.

Refunds follow the same logic. A Bid Upgrade cannot be refunded on its own; any refund happens only under the fare conditions of the underlying ticket, and only in connection with that ticket.

What does improve is the on-board product and, on a paid upgrade, mileage accrual in the higher cabin. In the Allegris Business cabin, the upgrade puts you in the standard Classic seat unless you separately pay for a premium seat category — the upgrade buys the cabin, not the best seat in it. Lounge access, priority boarding and baggage handling follow the cabin you actually travel in on the day.

When Lufthansa will not upgrade you

Some bookings are structurally ineligible, and no amount of asking at the gate changes them. Group bookings above nine passengers are excluded from fixed-price upgrades at online check-in. Bookings with any segment unconfirmed or on a waiting list are excluded. Bookings carrying unpaid chargeable extras are excluded until those are settled.

Tickets issued by a travel agency are a separate case. The itinerary is visible to Lufthansa, and cash upgrade products offered directly by the airline at check-in can often still be bought, but anything requiring the ticket to be reissued has to go back to the issuing party. Codeshare segments operated by a partner carrier follow the operating airline's upgrade rules, not Lufthansa's, even under a Lufthansa flight number.

Airlaza is IATA and ARC accredited, so tickets we issue are ours to reissue — one call to +1-888-890-4009 and we handle the airline side. Where a cabin is genuinely worth having, we will usually quote the premium cabin outright rather than gamble on an upgrade that may never confirm.

Buying the cabin instead of upgrading into it

There is an unglamorous arithmetic that upgrade pages rarely spell out. An upgrade is priced against the seat Lufthansa still has spare 48 hours before departure. A Business or Premium Economy ticket bought properly is priced against a fare filed months ahead, on a route the airline wants to fill.

For long-haul travel where the flat bed is the reason for the trip, the second route is frequently cheaper and always certain. It also protects the things an upgrade does not touch: baggage allowance, change and cancellation rights, and the ability to hold a specific Allegris seat category rather than whatever is left. No payment is taken on this website and we never ask for card details on the site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I upgrade my Lufthansa flight?

Four routes exist. Submit a Bid Upgrade offer at least 49 hours before departure, accept a fixed-price upgrade during online check-in, redeem Miles & More award miles as an Upgrade Award, or spend status eVouchers. Only the bid is conditional — the other three confirm immediately when space is released.

How late can I bid for a Lufthansa upgrade?

Offers must reach Lufthansa at the latest 49 hours before the departure time of the flight segment concerned. Lufthansa then tells you by email, 48 hours before scheduled departure, whether the offer was accepted. All correspondence about a Bid Upgrade happens by email and nothing else.

How does Lufthansa decide which upgrade bids win?

Lufthansa weighs several factors: the amount you offered, the amounts other passengers offered on the same flight, how many seats are actually available, and how many passengers are in your booking. A booking of four is assessed as one unit, which makes larger parties harder to clear than solo travellers.

Can I upgrade at Lufthansa online check-in?

Often yes. Lufthansa may present a fixed-price upgrade based on your current cabin and route, confirmed instantly when you pay. It states that upgrades to Business from all Economy fares are available for a fee up to one hour before departure on the flights where the offer is made.

Why is no upgrade offer showing at check-in?

Common causes are structural rather than capacity-related. Group bookings above nine passengers, bookings with any segment unconfirmed or waitlisted, and bookings with chargeable extras booked but unpaid are all excluded. So are bookings carrying an extra cabin-baggage seat, which conflicts with moving cabin.

How many miles is a Lufthansa upgrade?

There is no single figure. Miles & More prices Upgrade Awards by the departure and destination region plus the booking class you already hold, with cheaper booking classes costing more miles. Pricing is per flight segment, so a return journey costs double the one-way amount.

Can I upgrade from Economy to First Class on Lufthansa?

Not with a Miles & More Upgrade Award. An Upgrade Award moves you a maximum of two travel classes, so Economy to Business is permitted and Economy to First is not. First Class also only exists on the 747-8, A380, A340-600 and Allegris A350-900.

How many eVouchers do I need to upgrade?

Usually one within a zone — Economy to Business, or Business to First. Upgrading from the cheapest Economy or Premium Economy booking classes needs additional vouchers. Senators receive two eVouchers per qualification or renewal, HON Circle Members four, and they stay valid for 24 months.

Does upgrading change my Lufthansa ticket conditions?

No. Lufthansa states that when an upgrade offer is accepted, the conditions of your originally booked fare continue to apply — minimum and maximum stay, rebooking, cancellation and baggage rules included. A Bid Upgrade also cannot be refunded on its own, only alongside the underlying ticket.

Does a Lufthansa upgrade give me the best seat in the cabin?

Not automatically. In the Allegris Business cabin, an upgrade places you in the standard Classic seat; the premium categories are separately chargeable seat products. The upgrade buys the cabin and its service, lounge access and boarding priority, but the specific seat still depends on what is unassigned.
