Why "Lufthansa Business Class" no longer describes one seat

Until Allegris, a Lufthansa long-haul Business ticket bought you a predictable thing: a 2-2-2 V-shaped seat where the window passenger climbed over a neighbour to reach the aisle. That cabin still exists on most of the fleet. What changed in 2024 is that Lufthansa stopped selling a single Business seat and started selling a menu.

Allegris splits Business into seven categories inside the same cabin, at seven different prices. Four of them carry a surcharge on top of the Business fare, and the surcharge is per segment and per direction. A passenger who books "Business Class" and nothing else is assigned a Classic seat — perfectly good, direct aisle access, a flat bed — while the seats people photograph for reviews sit behind an extra payment or a Miles & More status tier.

The practical consequence is that two people on the same flight, in the same cabin, on the same fare, can have measurably different journeys. On Lufthansa more than on most European carriers, the seat map is part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.

The seven Allegris Business Class seat categories

Lufthansa's own naming is unusually literal, which helps. Every category below exists on the A350-900 and, in the same seven-category structure, on the Allegris Boeing 787-9.

The Suite is the headline. It has a screen quoted by Lufthansa at up to 68 centimetres, floor-to-ceiling-style walls and a door that closes — features that until Allegris appeared only in First Class on this airline. The Extra Space seat is the enthusiasts' choice: no door, but the largest usable working surface in the cabin. The Extra Long Bed matters to anyone over about 190 centimetres, because 2.2 metres against a standard 2 metres is the difference between sleeping and negotiating.

What the premium Allegris seats cost to reserve

Lufthansa prices Allegris seats in three distance bands rather than by route. The bands, as Lufthansa has explained them to trade media, run roughly: near for the Middle East and Africa, medium for the North American east coast and India, and far for Asia-Pacific, the US west coast and South America.

Two exemptions cut through the table. Senator members are reported to receive Extra Space and Privacy seats at no charge, and HON Circle members the Extra Long Bed. Everything else is paid, including for Business Flex passengers on the Suite. Read the price as a segment charge, not a trip charge — a Munich–Singapore return with the Suite selected in both directions is billed twice.

Which aircraft have Allegris Business, and which do not

This is the question that actually determines your flight, and the honest answer is that Allegris is still a minority of the long-haul fleet in 2026.

As of the most recent fleet tracking in mid-2026, roughly ten A350-900s and a similar number of 787-9s carried Allegris, with Lufthansa Group targeting a substantially larger number of Allegris aircraft across both hubs by the end of the year. The A380 is a special case: Lufthansa is fitting it with a Thompson Vantage XL seat in 1-2-1, which delivers direct aisle access without being the Allegris product.

Allegris routes: book the aircraft, not the destination

Allegris flying is concentrated on a set of long-haul routes that shifts each season, and the two hubs behave differently. Munich's A350s carry the only cabin with Allegris First above Business; Frankfurt's 787s are Business-topped.

The warning attached to every one of these is the same: aircraft rotate. A route flown by an Allegris 787 in June can be flown by an A330 in November, and an equipment swap on the morning of departure moves you between cabins without changing your fare. Check the operating type for your specific date and flight number before you commit, and re-check it if Lufthansa reschedules.

The legacy 2-2-2 cabin, and how to recognise it

Most Lufthansa Business Class passengers in 2026 are still flying the older seat, so it deserves an honest description rather than a dismissal. It converts to a fully flat bed, it is well built, and Lufthansa's soft product and crew do not change with the hardware. What it does not offer is direct aisle access from every seat.

In the 2-2-2 layout the window passenger of each pair must step over or around the aisle passenger. Lufthansa alternates seat direction so neighbours face opposite ways, which helps with privacy and does nothing for the physical exit problem. On a night flight with a sleeping neighbour, that is the whole review.

Spotting it is straightforward. Open the seat map before ticketing: if you see rows of six across in Business, it is the legacy cabin. If you see a staggered 1-2-1 pattern with named categories and prices attached, it is Allegris. The 747-8 adds a wrinkle — its upper deck is 2-2, which is a better place to sit than the main deck for the same fare.

Wi-Fi in Lufthansa Business Class, and the Starlink switch

Lufthansa's inflight internet is branded FlyNet, and 2026 is the year it changes underneath. On short and medium-haul flights it has been sold in three tiers — a messaging-only tier, a browsing tier and a streaming tier — with long-haul packages priced separately and free messaging extended across the long-haul network.

The commercial detail matters more than the technology. Lufthansa Group has said Starlink access will be free of charge for status customers and for anyone with a Travel ID — the group's free registration — across every travel class. So Business Class does not buy connectivity; a free account does. Registering a Travel ID before you fly is a two-minute job that is worth more than most paid Wi-Fi packages.

Baggage, lounges and the ground product

Business Class allowances are piece-based, and the ground benefits are where the fare quietly earns back some of its price.

Note the lounge distinction, because it is the most common misunderstanding. A Business Class ticket admits you to a Business Lounge. The Senator Lounges — quieter, better catered — are a status benefit, not a cabin benefit, so a Star Alliance Gold member in Economy gets the better room than a Business passenger without status. One further change is dated: American Express card-based access to Lufthansa lounges ends on 1 October 2026.

Fares, flexibility and the 2026 cancellation-fee episode

Lufthansa sells long-haul Business across a restricted-to-flexible range, and the fare brand governs rebooking, refunds and which seats you can pre-select without paying. Lufthansa does not publish a single worldwide change fee; it sets the charge per booking and shows it in the fare conditions.

The reason to read those conditions rather than trust the brand name was demonstrated in 2026. From 7 April, Lufthansa Group applied cancellation fees to fares on Europe–Asia-Pacific and southern Africa routes that had been sold as flexible, including €1,000 on Business Flex and €1,500 on Business Basic Plus, as reported by Travel-Dealz and LoyaltyLobby. After sustained criticism the group reversed course: from 3 June 2026 Business Flex tickets on those routes became fully refundable without charge again, with Basic Plus relief following on 10 June.

Nothing about that was hidden — it was all in the fare rules. It simply was not in the fare name. If you are choosing between Business fares on a trip that might move, price the flexibility explicitly.
