Lufthansa manage booking
What you can change yourself depends on your fare — and on who issued the ticket.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Lufthansa. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Lufthansa Manage Booking — labelled My Bookings on lufthansa.com and in the app — opens with your six-character booking code and surname, or a Travel ID login. Inside you can rebook, cancel, choose seats, buy extra bags, order meals and check in from 30 hours before departure. What it lets you do depends on your fare. Airlaza's desk is on +1-888-890-4009, 24/7.
What you can change in Manage Booking, and what you can't
My Bookings is Lufthansa's self-service area, and it is genuinely broad. Once you are in you can view and print the itinerary, add or correct passport and contact details, choose or move seats, buy additional checked baggage, order a special meal, register mobility assistance, ask for a mileage or paid upgrade, rebook a flight, cancel, and check in when the window opens.
What it will not do is anything that needs the ticket to be reissued by whoever issued it. Transferring a ticket to another traveller, splitting a party onto separate itineraries, merging two bookings into one, rerouting rather than simply moving a date, or repricing after an involuntary schedule change all need a person: Lufthansa's own service centre, or the agency that holds the ticket. If Manage Booking loads your itinerary but greys out the change buttons, that is usually the reason — not a website fault.
Finding your booking: booking code, ticket number or Miles & More
Three different references open a Lufthansa booking and they are not interchangeable. The booking code is the six-character record locator on the confirmation email. The e-ticket number is the thirteen-digit figure on the receipt, and Lufthansa's tickets begin 220 — that prefix is Lufthansa's IATA accounting code and it is the quickest way to tell who actually issued your ticket.
| Reference | Format | Where to find it | Opens My Bookings? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booking code (PNR) | 6 letters and digits | Top of the Lufthansa confirmation email | Yes, with the surname |
| Lufthansa e-ticket number | 13 digits starting 220 | "Ticket number" line on the e-ticket receipt | Yes, on Lufthansa-issued tickets |
| Partner-issued ticket | 13 digits, different 3-digit prefix (United = 016) | Same line on the receipt | Often not — use the issuing airline |
| Travel ID / Miles & More | Email and password, or service card number | Lufthansa account | Yes, and shows all linked trips |
On codeshares your Lufthansa booking code and the operating carrier's record locator can differ. Keep both.
Changing dates and times: what your Lufthansa fare allows
Rebooking rights are set by the fare brand, not by how far ahead you are. Lufthansa sells long-haul Economy as Light, Classic and Flex, and long-haul Business from a restricted Business Basic up to Business Flex, with a mid tier between them. Light is the trap: it is normally not rebookable at all, so no fee will unlock it.
One thing worth knowing before you go hunting for a figure: Lufthansa does not publish a single worldwide change fee. It sets the rebooking charge per booking, and the amount is shown in the fare conditions at the time of sale and again in My Bookings. Any site quoting you one universal number is guessing.
| Long-haul fare | Rebooking before departure | Fare refundable? | Checked bags included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy Light | Not permitted | No — unused taxes and charges only | None as standard |
| Economy Classic | Yes: fee plus any fare difference | No — unused taxes and charges only | 1 × 23 kg |
| Economy Flex | Yes: fare difference only | Yes | 1 × 23 kg |
| Business Basic | Yes: fee plus any fare difference | No | 1 × 32 kg |
| Business Flex | Yes: fare difference only | Yes | 2 × 32 kg |
Premium Economy sits between these tiers and carries its own conditions; the fare-conditions link inside My Bookings names yours exactly.
Seat selection, and when it costs money
Lufthansa charges for seats by fare and by seat type, and the rules changed materially for long-haul Economy Light on 13 August 2024: Light no longer includes advance seat selection at all. You are assigned a seat automatically when check-in opens, free of charge, but picking a specific one costs money at any stage, including after check-in.
Long-haul Business now uses the Allegris seat categories, and this is where the money is. Classic seats are free for everyone. The premium categories are banded by route length, so the same seat costs more on Frankfurt–Singapore than on Munich–New York.
| Seat | Who gets it free | Otherwise |
|---|---|---|
| Business Classic seat | Every Business passenger | Free |
| Privacy seat | Business Flex fares, Senator and HON Circle | Chargeable, banded by route length |
| Extra Space seat | Senator and HON Circle only | Chargeable, banded by route length |
| Extra Long Bed seat | HON Circle only | Chargeable, banded by route length |
| Business Suite | Nobody | Chargeable for all passengers |
| Economy Classic / Flex standard seat | Included on flights within Europe | Chargeable on intercontinental routes |
| Economy Light seat | Auto-assigned at check-in | Chargeable to choose a specific seat |
Amounts are shown in My Bookings for your exact flight; treat that figure as the one that applies.
Adding bags after booking
Extra baggage is bought inside My Bookings, and Lufthansa prices it by route rather than from a single global table. The consistent rule is the direction of travel: adding a bag to the booking in advance, or during online check-in, is cheaper than presenting it at the airport desk, where some countries add a service charge on top. Economy Light passengers on intercontinental routes are the main users of this, since no checked bag is included as standard.
| Item | Lufthansa figure |
|---|---|
| Cabin bag, Economy and Premium Economy | 1 piece, 55 × 40 × 23 cm, max 8 kg, plus a personal item |
| Checked bag, Economy Classic and Flex, long-haul | 1 piece up to 23 kg |
| Checked bag, Premium Economy | 2 pieces up to 23 kg each |
| Checked bag, Business | Up to 2 pieces, 32 kg each |
| Overweight band | 24–32 kg per piece |
| Oversize band | 159–292 cm total dimensions |
| Absolute maximum per piece | 32 kg and 292 cm |
Some markets, notably certain routes to India and South America, carry different free allowances, so check the allowance shown against your own ticket.
Special meals, assistance and other extras
Two deadlines matter more than the rest. Special meals must be ordered at least 24 hours before departure, and they are only loaded where the flight qualifies: Lufthansa serves special meals in Economy on flights longer than 185 minutes and in Business on flights longer than 60 minutes. There is no charge. In My Bookings a green tick means the request was accepted; an amber symbol means it was not, and that is worth a phone call rather than a shrug.
Mobility and wheelchair assistance should be registered at least 48 hours before departure so that the airports and ground handlers at both ends are notified. It is free, and it can be added in My Bookings after booking. Same-day requests are usually accommodated, but Lufthansa does not guarantee the same standard of service at short notice.
| Task | Lufthansa timing |
|---|---|
| Online check-in opens | 30 hours before departure, Lufthansa-operated flights |
| Check-in invitation email sent | 23 hours before departure |
| Special meal order | At least 24 hours before departure |
| Mobility / wheelchair assistance | At least 48 hours before departure |
| US 24-hour refund window | Cancel within 24 hours of purchase, on tickets bought 7+ days before departure |
| Group booking threshold | 10 or more passengers travelling together |
Name corrections versus name changes
These are two different transactions and Lufthansa treats them very differently. A correction fixes a name that was always meant to be the same person — a transposed letter, a missing middle name, a first and last name entered the wrong way round. A change puts a different traveller on the ticket, and airline tickets are not transferable, so that is refused outright regardless of fee.
The practical problem is that the two look identical from the outside, and the passenger's name field is not editable in My Bookings. Corrections have to be handled by whoever issued the ticket, against the passport, before check-in — and the closer you get to departure, the fewer options exist, because a reissued ticket has to be re-linked to the reservation before the flight closes.
If Airlaza issued your ticket, send us the passport page and we will raise the correction with Lufthansa on your behalf.
Bookings made through an agent: why Lufthansa may refuse
This is the single most common reason Manage Booking disappoints people, and it is not a bug. When a travel agency issues a ticket, the agency's IATA number sits on that ticket document. Under standard industry rules the issuing party controls the ticket, so Lufthansa's own systems will show you the itinerary — seats, bags, meals and check-in usually still work — while declining to rebook, reprice, refund or reissue it.
That includes tickets bought through online travel agencies, corporate travel platforms and consolidators, not just traditional agencies. It also means calling Lufthansa first often costs you time: their agent will read the ticket, see another party's stock, and refer you back.
Airlaza is IATA and ARC accredited, so tickets we issue are ours to reissue. One call to +1-888-890-4009 and we handle the airline side.
When Manage Booking won't work: codeshares, groups and award tickets
Three booking types routinely fail in My Bookings. Codeshares are the first: if your Lufthansa flight number covers a segment operated by a partner such as United, seat maps and changes often have to be made with the operating carrier, because the reservation systems do not hand full control to each other. Check the ticket prefix to see whose ticket it really is.
Group bookings are the second. Lufthansa treats 10 or more passengers travelling together as a group, sold under separate group terms, and those bookings are administered by the group desk or agency rather than by self-service.
Award tickets are the third. Miles & More redemptions are managed through the Miles & More account, not the standard My Bookings flow, and rebooking or cancelling one follows award rules — not the cash fare conditions on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my Lufthansa flight online?
Usually yes, if Lufthansa issued the ticket. Sign in to My Bookings at lufthansa.com with your six-character booking code and surname, open the flight and pick a new date. Economy Light is normally not rebookable at all. Tickets issued by an agency must be changed through that agency instead.
How much does it cost to change a Lufthansa flight?
There is no single figure. Lufthansa sets the rebooking charge individually per booking rather than publishing one worldwide fee, and shows it in the fare conditions when you buy and again in My Bookings. You also pay any difference in fare. Flex fares pay the difference only, with no change fee.
Can I select seats for free on Lufthansa?
It depends on fare and seat. Economy Classic and Flex include a standard seat on flights within Europe but charge on intercontinental routes. Long-haul Economy Light includes no advance selection — a seat is assigned free at check-in. In Business, Allegris Classic seats are free for everyone; premium categories are not.
How do I add a bag to a Lufthansa booking after booking?
Open My Bookings with your booking code and surname, or your Travel ID, and add baggage to the relevant flight. Prices are set by route, not by one fixed table. Adding the bag in advance, or during online check-in, costs less than paying at the airport counter on the day.
Can I change the name on my Lufthansa ticket?
No. Lufthansa tickets are not transferable, so you cannot put a different traveller on an existing ticket at any price. Genuine spelling corrections for the same person are a separate transaction, handled by whoever issued the ticket, against your passport, and they cannot be done inside My Bookings.
Why can't I manage a booking made through an agent?
Because the issuing party controls the ticket. An agency-issued ticket carries that agency's IATA number, so Lufthansa will display your itinerary and usually allow seats, bags and check-in, but refuse to rebook, reissue or refund it. Contact the issuing agency. If Airlaza issued it, call +1-888-890-4009.
What if my Lufthansa booking is a codeshare?
Then part of your journey is flown by a partner airline under a Lufthansa flight number. Seat maps and changes for that segment often have to go through the operating carrier, since the two reservation systems do not share full control. Check the ticket's three-digit prefix to see who issued it.
How late can I change a Lufthansa flight?
Practically, before check-in opens 30 hours ahead — after that, self-service rebooking usually closes and you need the service centre. The real limit is your fare: Light cannot be rebooked at all, Classic allows changes for a fee, and Flex allows them for the fare difference alone.
Can I cancel a Lufthansa flight through Manage Booking?
Yes, cancellation and refund requests are available in My Bookings. What you get back depends on the fare: Flex fares are refundable, while Light and Classic generally are not, though unused taxes and charges can be reclaimed. US-point-of-sale tickets bought 7+ days ahead qualify for a 24-hour refund.
Can I upgrade a Lufthansa booking online?
Yes, through more than one route. Miles & More members can apply award miles or eVouchers to an existing booking from the Miles & More account. Lufthansa also offers paid upgrades and an offer-based upgrade on eligible flights, presented inside My Bookings when your booking qualifies.
