Lufthansa seat selection
When seats are free, when they cost, and how status changes the rules.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Lufthansa. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Lufthansa charges for seat selection in Economy and Premium Economy on most fares, with prices running roughly 45 to 70 euro per segment depending on distance; Flex fares, Senators and HON Circle members get it free. Business and First seat categories follow separate Allegris pricing. Airlaza books seats as part of a written quote: +1-888-890-4009, 24/7.
Why Lufthansa seat selection is no longer simple
Lufthansa used to bundle a basic seat assignment into most fares and only charge for extra-legroom or front-cabin rows. That changed as the airline unbundled its fare structure: Light fares stripped out free seat choice entirely, and from July 2026 the policy tightened further so that even passengers who accepted a seat at online check-in now pay to swap it, across every cabin including long-haul. The result is that "free seat selection" on Lufthansa today depends almost entirely on which fare brand is printed on the ticket, not on how far in advance you check in.
The change affects long-haul travellers more than it first appears. A family assigned separate rows at check-in used to be able to move together for free; under the July 2026 rule, rearranging those seats after check-in now carries the same charge as choosing a seat from scratch, unless the fare or status held exempts the passenger.
Economy and Premium Economy seat fees
Lufthansa prices standard Economy and Premium Economy seat selection in three distance bands rather than by individual route, mirroring how it prices Allegris Business seats.
| Fare distance | Economy seat fee | Premium Economy seat fee |
|---|---|---|
| Short-haul | 20 to 40 euro | Not applicable |
| Medium-haul | 45 euro | 45 euro |
| Long-haul | 55 to 70 euro | 55 to 70 euro |
Fee bands as reported by Travel-Dealz seat-selection coverage; exact price depends on the specific flight and how far in advance the seat is reserved, and fees are per passenger, per segment.
Preferred zone seats near the front of Economy carry the higher end of the band even on shorter flights, because they combine faster deplaning with the standard seat-fee structure. A family of four selecting seats together on a long-haul Economy booking can therefore face a meaningful add-on cost before any baggage or meal extras are considered.
Which fares get free seat selection
Not every Economy or Premium Economy passenger pays. Lufthansa exempts specific fare brands and Miles & More tiers from the standard seat fee.
| Passenger type | Free seat selection |
|---|---|
| Economy Flex | Yes, Classic seats included |
| Premium Economy Flex | Yes, reduced or no fee |
| Miles & More Senator | Yes, Economy and Premium Economy |
| Miles & More HON Circle | Yes, Economy and Premium Economy |
| Economy Light, Classic | No, standard fee applies |
| Premium Economy Light | No exemption, even for Senators |
Exemption rules as reported by Travel-Dealz coverage of Lufthansa Group's 2026 seat-reservation policy.
The Premium Economy Light exception is worth noting specifically: it is the one fare where even top-tier Senator status does not waive the seat fee, because Lufthansa treats Light as a stripped-down product across the board rather than adjusting it by status tier.
The July 2026 check-in seat-swap change
Before July 2026, a passenger who accepted whatever seat was auto-assigned at check-in could usually still move to a different available seat at the airport or online, often without charge. From 1 July 2026, Lufthansa Group extended its seat-fee structure to cover that swap as well, on Economy and Premium Economy, including long-haul flights.
| Situation | Before July 2026 | From 1 July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing a seat before check-in | Fee applied on non-Flex fares | Unchanged |
| Swapping an auto-assigned seat at check-in | Often free | Fee applies, same fares affected |
| Flex fare or Senator/HON Circle | Free throughout | Unchanged, still free |
Change reported by Upgraded Points and Travel-Dealz coverage of the Lufthansa Group policy update.
Passengers who plan to sit together should reserve seats at booking rather than relying on check-in to sort itself out, because the free-form flexibility that used to exist at check-in has narrowed considerably.
Business and First Class seat selection
Business Class seat selection depends on which aircraft operates the flight. On Allegris aircraft, the standard Classic Business seat is included free with any Business fare, while named premium categories carry a per-segment surcharge.
| Allegris Business category | Typical surcharge |
|---|---|
| Classic Seat | Free with any Business fare |
| Privacy Seat, Extra Long Bed | 100 to 170 euro |
| Extra Space Seat | 130 to 230 euro |
| Business Suite | 400 to 600 euro |
Figures as published at Allegris seat-sale launch and reported by Travel-Dealz; charges are per passenger, per flight segment, and do not apply on the older 2-2-2 Business cabin, which has a single free seat type.
First Class seat selection is included with the fare on every Lufthansa First cabin, since First is sold as a single product without the tiered seat-category structure that Allegris introduced to Business.
Group and family seating
Lufthansa's Allegris cabin includes a purpose-built Family Seat grouping and a Double Seat option in Business, but standard Economy and Premium Economy have no equivalent named category — families there are simply choosing regular seats next to one another, subject to the same per-seat fee unless a fare or status exemption applies.
| Booking type | Seating approach |
|---|---|
| Family with young children | Contact Lufthansa or agent before travel to request adjacent seats |
| Group booking, same fare | Seats selected individually, fees apply per seat unless exempt |
| Infant on lap | Bulkhead or specific rows may be recommended, not guaranteed free |
Lufthansa has said it makes reasonable efforts to seat young children near an accompanying adult even without a paid seat selection, but this is described as a best-effort accommodation rather than a guaranteed free upgrade to adjacent seating, so booking seats in advance remains the more reliable option for families who want certainty.
How to actually select or change a Lufthansa seat
Seat selection can be done at three points in the booking lifecycle, and the fee — where one applies — is generally the same regardless of which point you choose.
| Stage | Where |
|---|---|
| At booking | lufthansa.com, the app, or through your travel agency |
| After booking, before check-in | Manage Booking |
| At check-in | Online check-in or the app, subject to the July 2026 swap fee |
If Airlaza issued the ticket, seat requests should go through the agency rather than Lufthansa's consumer portal directly, since the agency holds the booking record and can confirm seat availability and fees against the exact fare purchased before charging anything. the agency states seat costs in writing alongside the fare quote so there is no surprise charge at check-in: +1-888-890-4009.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lufthansa seat selection free?
Not by default. Economy Light and Classic fares charge roughly 45 to 70 euro per segment for seat selection depending on distance, while Economy Flex, Premium Economy Flex, and Miles & More Senator and HON Circle members select seats free, with the exception of Premium Economy Light, which has no status exemption.
How much does Lufthansa charge for a seat in Economy?
Fees run in bands by distance: roughly 20 to 40 euro on short-haul, 45 euro on medium-haul, and 55 to 70 euro on long-haul flights, charged per passenger per segment. Preferred front-of-cabin seats sit at the higher end of the applicable band regardless of flight length.
Can I change my Lufthansa seat for free at check-in?
Generally no, since 1 July 2026. Lufthansa Group extended its seat-selection fee to cover swapping an auto-assigned seat at check-in on Economy and Premium Economy, including long-haul flights. Flex fares and Senator or HON Circle status continue to allow free seat changes at any stage.
Do Miles & More Senators get free seat selection?
Yes, in Economy and Premium Economy, with one exception: Premium Economy Light carries no status exemption, so even Senators pay the standard fee on that specific fare. On other fares, Senator and HON Circle status waives the standard seat-selection charge across both cabins.
How much does an Allegris Business Suite seat cost to select?
Between 400 and 600 euro per passenger per segment, depending on flight distance, on top of the Business fare. The standard Classic Business seat on Allegris aircraft is included free with any Business fare; the surcharge applies only to the named premium categories such as the Suite, Privacy Seat and Extra Space Seat.
Can families sit together on Lufthansa without paying a seat fee?
Not guaranteed. Lufthansa says it makes reasonable efforts to seat young children near an accompanying adult, but this is a best-effort accommodation, not a fee waiver. Families who want certainty about sitting together should select and pay for seats at booking rather than relying on automatic check-in assignment.
Does Lufthansa First Class charge for seat selection?
No. First Class is sold as a single seat product on every Lufthansa First cabin, so seat selection is included with the fare. This differs from Business Class on Allegris aircraft, where the base seat is free but several named premium categories carry a per-segment surcharge.
What is the difference between Economy Flex and Economy Light for seat selection?
Economy Flex includes free selection of a standard Classic seat as part of the fare. Economy Light excludes seat selection entirely, charging the standard per-segment fee for any seat choice, and offers no free upgrade path to seat selection through Miles & More status.
Can I select a seat when booking through the agency?
Yes. the agency confirms seat availability and any applicable fee against the exact Lufthansa fare being quoted, and states the seat cost in writing alongside the fare before booking, so there is no surprise charge added later at check-in.
Where do I go to change a Lufthansa seat after booking?
Manage Booking on lufthansa.com or the app for tickets bought directly from Lufthansa. If the agency issued the ticket, contact the agency directly, since the agency holds the booking record and can process the seat change against the fare rules that actually apply to that ticket.
