Lufthansa cancellation and refund
What's refundable, what isn't, and how the fare class decides it.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Lufthansa. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Lufthansa refunds depend on the fare brand you bought, not the cabin. Bookings made for US-origin or US-bound travel get a free 24-hour cancellation window under US Department of Transportation rules; after that, Light and Basic fares are largely non-refundable while Flex fares generally cancel free. Airlaza's desk quotes fare conditions in writing: +1-888-890-4009, 24/7.
The 24-hour rule, and where it actually applies
US federal rule requires airlines operating flights to, from or within the United States to allow a full refund if a ticket is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, provided the booking was made at least seven days before departure. Lufthansa applies this on itineraries that touch the United States because US law requires it there, not because it is a Lufthansa-wide policy for every route in the network.
Outside that US-linked window, refund rights fall back to whatever the fare brand allows. A non-US booking made on a restrictive fare has no equivalent free-look period unless Lufthansa's own terms for that specific fare say otherwise. The distinction matters because travellers often assume the 24-hour rule is universal; it is a US regulatory requirement that Lufthansa honours where the law requires it, and travellers booking purely European or Asian itineraries should not assume it applies to them.
If your itinerary has any US airport in it, check your booking confirmation for the exact purchase timestamp — the clock starts there, not at departure.
Refund rights by fare brand
Lufthansa sells long-haul fares across a small number of named brands, and the brand — not the cabin — decides what a cancellation returns to you.
| Fare brand | Cash refund after 24hr window |
|---|---|
| Economy Light | Generally none, taxes only |
| Economy Classic | Fee applies, partial value |
| Economy Flex | Refundable, fee may apply |
| Premium Economy Flex | Refundable, reduced fee |
| Business Flex | Refundable, fee-dependent |
| First Flex | Refundable, fee retained |
Brand names and general refund posture reported by Travel-Dealz and Lufthansa Group fare-rule coverage; exact percentage and fee vary by route and date of booking, so check the fare rules attached to your own ticket before assuming a figure.
Light and Classic fares are built for price, not flexibility — a cancelled Light ticket typically returns only government taxes and fees, not the fare paid. Flex fares are the ones marketed as fully changeable, and 2026 is the year that marketing was tested in public.
The April to June 2026 cancellation-fee episode
Effective 7 April 2026, on routes between Europe and parts of Asia-Pacific plus South Africa, Mauritius and the Seychelles, Lufthansa Group introduced cancellation fees on fares that had previously been sold as fully refundable Flex products.
| Cabin, fare | Fee from 7 April 2026 |
|---|---|
| Economy Flex | 400 euro |
| Premium Economy Flex | 700 euro |
| Business Flex | 1,000 euro |
| Business Basic Plus | 1,500 euro |
| First Flex | 1,500 euro |
| First Basic Plus | 2,000 euro |
Fee schedule as reported by Travel-Dealz and LoyaltyLobby, April 2026, covering the affected long-haul routes only.
After sustained criticism from corporate travel buyers and points media, Lufthansa Group reversed most of the change. From 3 June 2026, Economy, Premium Economy and Business Flex tickets on the affected routes became fully refundable again without charge, with a further reduction applied to Basic Plus fares from 10 June 2026. First Class retained a reduced refund fee. The episode is a useful reminder that a fare labelled "Flex" is only as flexible as the printed fare rules, which can change with two months' notice.
How to actually cancel a Lufthansa booking
Lufthansa offers three practical cancellation routes, and which one applies depends on who issued the ticket.
| Method | Best for |
|---|---|
| Manage Booking on lufthansa.com | Tickets bought directly from Lufthansa |
| Lufthansa Service Center | Complex fares, multi-passenger bookings |
| Original travel agency | Tickets issued by a third party |
If Airlaza issued the ticket, the cancellation has to go through the agency rather than directly through Lufthansa's own portal, because the agency of record controls the record locator for refund processing. Passengers who booked directly with Lufthansa should use Manage Booking first; it is the fastest route and shows the exact refund amount before you confirm.
Refund timelines once a cancellation is processed
A cancelled fare being refundable does not mean the money appears instantly. Lufthansa processes refunds back to the original payment method, and the timeline depends on how the ticket was paid for.
| Payment method | Typical processing time |
|---|---|
| Credit card | Several business days to a few weeks |
| Bank transfer | Longer, bank-dependent |
| Travel agency-issued ticket | Set by the issuing agency's own process |
Card refunds tend to move faster because the card networks handle the reversal automatically once Lufthansa authorises it; the underlying banking timelines are set by the card issuer, not Lufthansa, which is why two passengers cancelling the same flight on the same day can see the money land on different dates.
Award-ticket and voucher cancellations
Miles & More award tickets follow a separate set of rules from cash fares. Cancelling an award booking typically returns the miles to the member's account, sometimes with a redeposit charge that depends on membership tier and how close to departure the cancellation happens. Higher-tier Miles & More members are generally treated more leniently on this charge than passengers with no status.
Vouchers issued in place of a cash refund — for example after a schedule change Lufthansa initiates rather than the passenger — usually carry their own validity window and are not automatically convertible back to cash unless the passenger specifically requests a monetary refund where regulation entitles them to one, such as under EU261 for a Lufthansa-caused disruption inside its scope.
When Lufthansa cancels or significantly changes the flight
A cancellation initiated by Lufthansa itself is a different situation from a passenger changing their mind, and it carries stronger passenger rights on flights within EU261's scope — generally flights departing the EU on any airline, or arriving in the EU on an EU carrier such as Lufthansa.
| Lufthansa-caused disruption | Passenger entitlement |
|---|---|
| Flight cancelled | Full refund or rerouting, passenger's choice |
| Significant schedule change | Free rebooking or refund |
| Denied boarding, EU261 scope | Refund or reroute plus possible compensation |
Where EU261 applies, the airline cannot simply offer a voucher and call the matter closed if the passenger asks for cash; the regulation gives the passenger the choice between rerouting and a refund. Outside EU261's geographic scope, the same courtesy is often extended commercially but is not a legal entitlement.
Practical steps before you cancel
Two checks save most of the disappointment travellers report with Lufthansa cancellations. First, read the fare rules attached to the specific booking rather than trusting the brand name, because the 2026 episode showed brand names and fare rules can diverge. Second, note the exact purchase timestamp on any US-linked itinerary, because the 24-hour window is measured from that moment, not from when you decide to cancel.
For a ticket issued by the agency, contact the agency directly rather than Lufthansa's consumer channels; the agency holds the record locator and can process the cancellation against the correct fare rules without the back-and-forth of explaining third-party issuance to an airline agent. the agency also quotes refundable fare options upfront in writing, so a client who expects to change plans can price that flexibility before booking rather than discovering the fee after the fact: +1-888-890-4009.
Frequently asked questions
Does Lufthansa have a 24-hour free cancellation policy?
Yes, on bookings tied to the United States. US Department of Transportation rules require a full refund if a ticket is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, as long as the booking was made at least seven days before departure. This applies because of US law on US-linked itineraries, not as a network-wide Lufthansa policy.
Can I get a refund on a non-refundable Lufthansa ticket?
Generally only government taxes and fees, unless the cancellation falls inside the 24-hour US window or Lufthansa itself cancels or significantly changes the flight. Light and Basic fare brands are built to exclude cash refunds outside those situations, which is the trade-off for their lower upfront price.
What happened to Lufthansa's Flex fare cancellation fees in 2026?
From 7 April 2026, Lufthansa Group added cancellation fees up to 2,000 euro on Flex and Basic Plus fares on routes to parts of Asia-Pacific and Africa. After criticism, most fees were reversed from 3 June 2026, with Basic Plus relief following on 10 June. First Class kept a reduced fee.
How long does a Lufthansa refund take to process?
It depends on the payment method. Card refunds typically post within several business days to a few weeks once Lufthansa authorises the reversal, while bank transfers can take longer depending on the receiving bank. Travel agency-issued tickets follow the issuing agency's own refund timeline rather than Lufthansa's directly.
Can the agency cancel my Lufthansa ticket for me?
Yes, if the agency issued the ticket. The agency of record controls the booking's record locator, so cancellations and refund requests on the agency-issued Lufthansa tickets should go through the agency rather than Lufthansa's own portal, which will not show the correct fare rules for an agency-issued booking.
What happens if Lufthansa cancels my flight?
On flights within EU261's scope, you are entitled to choose between a full refund and rerouting, and possibly compensation depending on notice given and the cause. Lufthansa cannot substitute a voucher if you specifically request cash where the regulation applies; outside that scope, the airline often offers similar terms commercially.
Are Miles & More award ticket cancellations refundable?
Miles are typically redeposited to the member's account rather than refunded as cash, sometimes with a redeposit charge depending on Miles & More tier and timing before departure. Higher-tier members generally pay reduced or no redeposit fees compared with members holding no status.
Is Lufthansa Economy Flex fully refundable?
Generally yes, outside the affected routes and dates of the 2026 fee episode, though a processing fee can still apply depending on the fare rules printed on the ticket. Always check the specific fare conditions shown at booking, since "Flex" describes flexibility relative to Light and Classic, not an unconditional guarantee.
Does the 24-hour cancellation rule apply to flights that don't touch the US?
Not automatically. The 24-hour rule is a US regulatory requirement tied to flights operating to, from or within the United States. On a purely intra-European or intra-Asian Lufthansa itinerary, refund rights outside any free-look period Lufthansa separately offers depend entirely on the fare brand purchased.
Who do I contact to cancel a Lufthansa ticket booked through a travel agency?
The travel agency that issued the ticket, not Lufthansa directly. The issuing agency holds the booking record and processes the cancellation against the correct fare rules. If the agency issued your ticket, call +1-888-890-4009 and a specialist will process the cancellation and any refund in writing.

How Airlaza quotes work
We are an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency. Every quote states the fare family, the change and cancellation terms and whether a refund is cash or voucher — in writing, before you pay. No card details are taken on this site.
