American Airlines manage booking
What you can change online, plus the US 24-hour and automatic-refund rules that apply.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not American Airlines. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
American Airlines lets you retrieve a booking with a surname and six-character record locator, then change flights, cancel, pick seats or add requests — but only if American or your agency issued the ticket, and only before check-in. Two rules changed in 2026. Airlaza's desk is on +1-888-890-4009, 24/7.
What "manage booking" reaches, and where the wall is
American does not use the phrase "manage booking" on its own site. The equivalent is My trips, reached from the aa.com homepage or the American app, and it is narrower than travellers expect. Understanding the boundary saves a wasted hour.
| Task | Available in My trips | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| View itinerary and receipt | Yes | Works even on agency-issued tickets |
| Check in | Yes | Opens 24 hours before departure |
| Change flights | Usually | Blocked once you have checked in |
| Cancel and take credit | Usually | Depends on fare and point of sale |
| Select or change seats | Yes | Paid on Basic Economy from 18 May 2026 |
| Add AAdvantage number | Yes | Must be added before travel to earn |
| Add special assistance or meal requests | Yes | Some requests require a phone call |
| Reissue an agency-issued ticket | No | The issuing agency controls the ticket |
The wall is ticket control. American's systems will display any itinerary that includes an American flight, but the party that issued the ticket — American, an online travel agent, a corporate booking tool or an accredited agency such as Airlaza — is the party that can reissue or refund it. This is why a booking looks fully visible on aa.com yet every change button is greyed out.
Finding the reservation: record locator, ticket number, e-ticket
Three different identifiers get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Getting the right one in front of the right party is most of the work.
| Identifier | Format | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Record locator (PNR) | Six letters and numbers | Opens the itinerary in My trips |
| AA ticket number | 13 digits beginning 001 | Identifies the ticket for refund or reissue |
| AAdvantage number | Seven characters | Links the trip to your account and status |
American's ticket stock begins with 001 — the airline's IATA numeric code — so a 13-digit number starting 001 was issued on American's own stock. If your ticket number starts with a different prefix, an interline partner or a consolidator issued it, and American cannot reissue it on request.
A second complication: a booking made through an agency often carries two record locators, the airline's and the agency's. They look identical in format. The one that opens My trips is American's, printed on the itinerary next to the flight numbers. If the code you have does not retrieve the trip, you almost certainly have the agency's locator, and the agency is who you need.
The 24-hour rule tightened on 30 July 2026
This is the single most consequential change for anyone booking American in 2026, and it caught the industry press by surprise. Under 14 CFR 259.5(b)(4), US carriers must offer either a full refund within 24 hours of purchase or a held reservation at the quoted fare for 24 hours — but the regulation only bites when the booking is made seven days or more before departure.
American had been more generous than the rule for years. It has now stopped.
| Period | Booking made this far ahead | 24-hour free cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| Before 30 July 2026 | Two days or more before departure | Yes |
| From 30 July 2026 | Seven days or more before departure | Yes |
| From 30 July 2026 | Fewer than seven days before departure | No |
The change applies across fare types, not just to cheap tickets. Practically, it means a flight bought on Monday for the following Friday now has no free-look window at all: it is a committed purchase from the moment payment clears. Delta remains the outlier among large US carriers by offering 24-hour refunds regardless of how close departure is. American now sits with United, Southwest and JetBlue at the regulatory floor.
The free 24-hour hold — the option most people miss
American offers something most of its competitors have dropped: the ability to reserve a fare without paying at all. During checkout on eligible itineraries, alongside the payment options, there is a hold choice that locks the price for up to 24 hours with no card details entered and nothing to cancel afterwards.
| Feature | Free 24-hour hold | 24-hour refund after purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Payment taken up front | No | Yes, then refunded |
| Advance-purchase condition | Booking seven days or more before departure | Booking seven days or more before departure |
| What happens if you do nothing | Reservation cancels itself | Ticket stands and you have paid |
| Refund processing wait | None — nothing was charged | Days, back to the original card |
The hold is now materially more useful than it was, precisely because the refund route narrowed. If you are undecided and departure is more than a week away, holding is cleaner than buying and unwinding: no money leaves your account, no refund has to be chased, and the fare is protected while you check a hotel or a visa appointment. The reservation cancels automatically if you never complete payment.
Changing a flight: the fee is gone, the fare difference is not
American removed change fees on most tickets and has not brought them back, which is often misreported as "changes are free". They are not free. The fee is zero; the fare difference is whatever the market says on the day you rebook.
| Ticket type | Change fee | Fare difference | Practical position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Cabin, Premium Economy, Flagship Business, First | None on most itineraries | You pay any increase | Genuinely flexible |
| Basic Economy | Not changeable | n/a | Cancel-for-credit is the only route |
| Award ticket in AAdvantage miles | Changes permitted | Mileage difference applies | Redeposit rules differ from cash |
Two operational points matter more than the fee rules. First, you cannot change a reservation online once you have checked in — American's own reservations guidance directs checked-in customers to call instead, so if you are watching a connection unravel, check in late rather than early. Second, changing one passenger on a multi-passenger booking often requires the reservation to be split, which agents can do and the website generally cannot.
Basic Economy sits apart. AAdvantage members who booked directly with American in the United States can cancel for credit minus a cancellation fee, provided the AAdvantage number was in the reservation before cancelling and the cancellation happens before the first flight departs.
Same-day changes and standby inside 24 hours
Within 24 hours of departure a separate rulebook takes over, and it is more generous than it used to be. Standby for an earlier flight is now free for AAdvantage members regardless of status — a change from the years when it was an elite perk.
| Option | Cost | Guarantee | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same-day standby, earlier flight | Free for AAdvantage members | None — cleared at the gate | Same origin and destination |
| Same-day standby, later flight | Free | None | AAdvantage status members only |
| Same-day confirmed change | Fee applies, waived for ConciergeKey, Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro | Seat is confirmed | Same routing, American or American Eagle operated |
Both routes require the same origin and destination airports and the same calendar day; you cannot use them to reroute through a different hub. Standby requests open around 24 hours before departure and close roughly 45 minutes before the flight you want, and the standby list is ordered by AAdvantage tier, with Executive Platinum cleared first. Basic Economy is excluded from same-day confirmed changes.
When American changes your flight: the DOT automatic refund rule
If the disruption is American's doing rather than yours, a federal rule that took effect on 28 October 2024 replaces the airline's own discretion. Carriers must issue an automatic cash refund — not a voucher, not a credit — when a flight is cancelled or significantly changed and the passenger declines the alternative offered. Crucially, this applies to non-refundable tickets.
| Trigger | Threshold |
|---|---|
| Delay or schedule change, domestic | Three hours or more |
| Delay or schedule change, international | Six hours or more |
| Departure or arrival airport changes | Any change |
| Downgrade in class of service | Any downgrade |
| Added connections | Any increase in the number of stops |
Refunds must go back to the original form of payment, and the money must move within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods. Ancillary fees you paid for a service you did not receive are refundable too — a seat you never got, Wi-Fi that did not work. Checked bag fees must be refunded when a bag is delayed beyond 12 hours on a domestic trip or 30 hours on an international one. You do not have to accept a Trip Credit; if you want cash, say so.
Flight Credit and Trip Credit are not the same product
American issues two credit types with different clocks, and travellers routinely lose value by assuming they behave alike.
| Flight Credit | Trip Credit | |
|---|---|---|
| Created by | Cancelling your own eligible ticket | Compensation, goodwill, or a refund taken as credit |
| Clock starts | Date the original ticket was issued | Date the credit was issued |
| Standard validity | One year | One year |
| Extended validity | Five years where DOT rules apply to the cancellation | Five years where DOT rules apply |
| Deadline applies to | Booking the new trip | Booking the new trip, not travelling by then |
The trap is in the second row. Flight Credit expires one year from when the original ticket was issued, not from when you cancelled — so a ticket bought in January and cancelled in November leaves roughly two months of life, not twelve. Trip Credit runs from its own issue date and is therefore usually worth more time. In both cases the deadline is the date you must book by, not the date you must fly by, so a credit expiring next month can still buy travel next year. American does not reinstate expired credits.
Managing a booking that Airlaza issued
If Airlaza issued your ticket, we hold it and we handle the airline side — reissues, schedule-change rebookings, refund filings and name corrections — rather than sending you into a phone queue. Call +1-888-890-4009 with your surname and record locator and the desk picks it up.
If American or another agency issued the ticket, that party controls it, and we will tell you so plainly instead of taking your details.
What Airlaza is built for is the booking that has not happened yet. We are an IATA and ARC accredited agency and we quote long-haul Business, First and Premium Economy fares in writing, including routings and partner combinations a single-airline website will not display. You see the cabin, the aircraft, the fare conditions and the total before you commit. There is no checkout on this site and we never ask for card details on the website.
Frequently asked questions
How do I manage my American Airlines booking online?
Open My trips on aa.com or in the American app and enter your surname with the six-character record locator, or sign in to your AAdvantage account. From there you can view the itinerary, check in, change or cancel flights, choose seats and add requests, subject to your fare rules.
Can I change my American Airlines flight without paying a fee?
Usually yes on Main Cabin, Premium Economy, Flagship Business and First tickets, where American no longer charges a change fee on most itineraries. You still pay any fare difference on the new flight. Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed at all, only cancelled for credit in limited circumstances.
What is American Airlines' 24-hour cancellation rule in 2026?
From 30 July 2026, free cancellation within 24 hours of booking applies only when you booked seven days or more before departure. Previously the threshold was two days. Federal rules require nothing more than this, so last-minute American bookings now carry no free-look period.
Can I cancel a Basic Economy ticket on American Airlines?
Sometimes, for credit rather than cash. AAdvantage members who booked directly with American in the United States can cancel before the first flight departs and receive credit minus a cancellation fee, provided the AAdvantage number was attached to the reservation before cancelling.
Why can't I change my booking after checking in?
American's reservation system locks the itinerary once check-in is completed, because the ticket has been coupled to that specific flight. The website will refuse the change and direct you to call. If a change looks likely, delay check-in — you have until 45 minutes before most departures.
What happens if American cancels or significantly changes my flight?
Under the US rule effective 28 October 2024, you are owed an automatic cash refund if you decline the alternative offered. Significant means three hours domestic, six hours international, an airport change, added connections or a downgrade. Non-refundable tickets are covered.
How long is American Airlines Flight Credit valid?
One year from the date the original ticket was issued — not from when you cancelled — so cancelling late in a ticket's life leaves little time. Trip Credit instead runs one year from its own issue date. Both extend to five years where the DOT cancellation rules apply.
Can I hold an American Airlines fare without paying?
Yes, on eligible itineraries booked seven days or more before departure. At checkout American offers a hold that locks the price for up to 24 hours with no payment details taken. If you never complete the purchase the reservation cancels itself, so nothing needs refunding.
Can I change a booking that American Airlines did not issue?
Not through aa.com. American will display the itinerary and let you check in and select seats, but reissues and refunds belong to whoever issued the ticket — an online agency, a corporate tool, a consolidator or Airlaza. Check whether your ticket number begins 001.
Can Airlaza manage my American Airlines booking?
If Airlaza issued the ticket, yes — we handle changes, schedule-change rebookings, refunds and name corrections with American directly. If someone else issued it, they control it and we will say so. Our core work is quoting long-haul premium cabins in writing before you book.

How Airlaza quotes work
We are an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency. Every quote states the fare family, the change and cancellation terms and whether a refund is cash or voucher — in writing, before you pay. No card details are taken on this site.
