American Airlines first class

Domestic First and Flagship First are different products — and one is being retired.

American Airlines still sells international Flagship First, but only on Boeing 777-300ERs that have not yet been retrofitted — and every one of the twenty is being converted to a business-only layout. Domestic First Class is an entirely separate, recliner-seat product. Call +1-888-890-4009 for a written quote before the cabin disappears.

Two products, one word: what "first class" means on American

American uses "first class" for two things that share almost nothing. Flagship First is the international four-cabin product: a private forward cabin of eight suites on the 777-300ER, with a fully flat bed, its own check-in area at certain airports and its own restaurant inside certain lounges. Domestic First Class is the front cabin on narrowbody aircraft flying within the United States, with a wider recliner, a meal on longer sectors and no lounge entitlement.

A traveller who books "American Airlines first class" from Dallas to London and a traveller who books it from Dallas to Denver are buying products separated by tens of thousands of dollars in delivered value. American does not help by naming them similarly, and third-party booking sites frequently display both simply as "First".

The useful test is the aircraft. If the flight is operated by a 777-300ER that has not been through the retrofit programme, Flagship First is a possibility. Every other aircraft in the fleet either sells Flagship Business as its top cabin or sells domestic First Class.

Flagship First on the 777-300ER: the cabin itself

Flagship First occupies rows 1 and 2 on the un-retrofitted 777-300ER, arranged 1-2-1 across two aisles — eight seats in a cabin of its own, forward of everything else on the aircraft. The seat converts to a fully flat bed with several intermediate positions, and the bedding is the part reviewers consistently single out: a mattress pad, a thick duvet and a full-size pillow rather than the single blanket handed out further back.

Because 2026 is American's centennial, the airline has been running commemorative "100" branded menus, amenity kits and pyjamas through its Flagship cabins during the year. That is a soft-product flourish, not a permanent specification, and it will not survive the cabin it is served in.

Eight seats across a fleet of twenty aircraft was always a small inventory. As retrofits proceed, it shrinks weekly.

The retirement: what is actually happening, and when

American is converting all twenty 777-300ERs under a programme reported as Olympus. The first aircraft, registration N718AN, began work in Hong Kong in December 2025 and returned to Dallas/Fort Worth on 13 August 2026 with no first class cabin at all.

Premium Economy2844
Main Cabin216216
Total seats304330

The trade-off is visible in the table: American removes eight first class seats and gains eighteen business and sixteen premium economy seats, with economy untouched. Business pitch drops from 43 to 42 inches and Main Cabin Extra from 35 to 34 inches to make the arithmetic work.

Reporting on the programme suggests the full twenty-aircraft conversion was expected to take around two years under ideal conditions, and that supply-chain delays on seats and interior parts have already stretched parts of the schedule. American continues to sell First Class in its published schedule into mid-2027, so tickets exist for a cabin that may not be on the aircraft by the time you fly.

Flagship First check-in and Flagship First Dining

The ground experience is where a Flagship First ticket earns most of its premium, and it is worth understanding because these two benefits cannot be bought separately at any price.

BenefitWho is entitled
Flagship First check-inFirst or Business Plus, qualifying route
Flagship First DiningFirst or Business Plus, qualifying route
Flagship LoungeFirst, Business and qualifying elites
Guest in First DiningNot generally permitted

Flagship First check-in is a separate, staffed check-in zone at airports that have one, including New York JFK Terminal 8, feeding you into security and the lounge without joining the main queue. Flagship First Dining is a sit-down restaurant inside certain Flagship Lounges, with menus built by local chefs at each location rather than a single national menu.

American has associated Flagship First Dining with Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Los Angeles and New York JFK, but aviation reporting during 2026 has described individual rooms as closed or operating on reduced terms at different points in the year. Treat the specific airport as something to confirm close to departure rather than assume.

What replaces Flagship First on a retrofitted aircraft

If your 777-300ER has been converted, the top cabin is Flagship Suite — American's new business class, in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone with a sliding door at each seat, wireless charging and a 4K Bluetooth monitor. Seventy of them replace the previous fifty-two business seats and the eight first class suites combined.

The honest comparison is mixed rather than a straight downgrade. The Suite has hardware that Flagship First never had — a door, a 4K screen, wireless charging — and it is a newer seat by well over a decade. What is lost is scarcity and the service ratio that comes with an eight-seat cabin, plus the automatic entitlement to First Dining and Flagship First check-in.

Passengers who want those ground benefits after the retrofit have one remaining route: the Flagship Business Plus fare, sold on the 777-200, 787-8 and 787-9, which carries First check-in, First Dining and a third checked bag without a first class cabin existing.

Domestic First Class: a different purchase entirely

Domestic First Class is the front cabin on American's narrowbody fleet within the United States. Expect a wider seat with meaningful extra recline and legroom, priority boarding, complimentary alcoholic drinks and a meal on flights over roughly 900 miles. Do not expect a flat bed, an amenity kit or a lounge.

The lounge point surprises people most often. A domestic First Class ticket does not open an Admirals Club; entry requires a membership, a day pass or an eligible co-branded credit card. That is a genuine difference from Flagship Business and Flagship First, where lounge access comes with the fare on qualifying routes.

Where domestic First does deliver disproportionate value is on long domestic sectors — transcontinental flying and Dallas/Fort Worth to Hawaii — because the flight is long enough for a full meal service and several hours of extra space to matter.

Lie-flat inside the United States: where it survives

American historically ran a dedicated four-hour-plus premium transcontinental product on the Airbus A321T, which carried a bespoke Flagship First cabin between New York, Boston and the West Coast. That fleet is being de-specified: American began returning A321Ts to a standard domestic layout from 2024, stripping the first class cabin and the seatback screens with it.

The replacement strategy keeps flat beds on the route without keeping first class. The Airbus A321XLR now flies the premium transcontinental markets with 20 Flagship Suites, 12 premium economy seats and 123 main cabin seats — a business-class-topped aircraft rather than a first-class one. It entered service on JFK to Los Angeles in December 2025, added JFK to San Francisco on 7 May 2026 and Boston to Los Angeles on 2 July 2026.

So the answer to "can I still fly flat across America" is yes; the answer to "can I still fly first class across America" is increasingly no. Airlaza is IATA and ARC accredited and names the aircraft type in every written premium cabin quote, which on these routes is the only thing that distinguishes a suite from a recliner.

Booking a first class ticket while it still exists

Three practical points govern buying Flagship First in its final period. First, the equipment is not guaranteed: American reassigns widebody types routinely, and a retrofitted 777-300ER substituted onto your flight means the first class cabin you paid for no longer exists on the aircraft. If that happens, the reissue and any fare difference are handled by whoever holds your ticket, so keep the booking with a party that will argue the point for you.

Second, upgrading into it is close to impossible by design. Complimentary elite upgrades do not touch American's long-haul international network, and the systemwide upgrade instrument moves business to first only where a first cabin exists, on a shrinking list of aircraft, against very limited confirmable space.

Third, the alternatives are worth pricing side by side rather than sequentially: Flagship First on an un-retrofitted 777-300ER, Flagship Suite on a retrofitted one or a 787-9P, and Flagship Business Plus on a 787 for the ground benefits without the cabin. Those three sit at different prices on the same route and deliver quite different trips.

Frequently asked questions

Does American Airlines still have first class in 2026?

Yes, but only as Flagship First on Boeing 777-300ERs that have not yet been retrofitted, plus domestic First Class on narrowbody aircraft within the United States. All twenty 777-300ERs are being converted to a business-only layout, so the international first class cabin is being withdrawn.

Which American Airlines aircraft has Flagship First?

Only the Boeing 777-300ER, and only those still in the original configuration with eight first class suites in rows 1 and 2, arranged 1-2-1. The Airbus A321T that once carried a transcontinental first class cabin has been progressively returned to a standard domestic layout since 2024.

When is American Airlines retiring Flagship First?

American began the twenty-aircraft 777-300ER retrofit with N718AN, which returned to Dallas/Fort Worth on 13 August 2026 without a first class cabin. The airline continues selling First Class in its published schedule into mid-2027, so the cabin disappears aircraft by aircraft rather than on one date.

What is the difference between Flagship First and Flagship Business?

Flagship First is an eight-seat forward cabin on the 777-300ER with a flat bed, Flagship First check-in and Flagship First Dining. Flagship Business is the much larger lie-flat cabin behind it. Only First and Flagship Business Plus fares carry the First Dining and First check-in entitlements.

Does domestic first class on American include lounge access?

No. A domestic First Class ticket does not open an Admirals Club; you need a membership, a day pass or an eligible co-branded credit card. Lounge access with the fare applies to Flagship Business and Flagship First on qualifying long-haul international and JFK transcontinental flights only.

Is American Airlines domestic first class lie-flat?

Generally no. Domestic First Class uses a wider recliner with extra legroom, not a flat bed. Flat beds within the United States now come mainly from the Airbus A321XLR's 20 Flagship Suites on premium transcontinental routes, and from widebody aircraft on Dallas/Fort Worth to Hawaii services.

What is Flagship First Dining and who can use it?

It is a sit-down restaurant inside certain Flagship Lounges, with menus from local chefs rather than a national menu. Access comes with a same-day Flagship First ticket or a Flagship Business Plus fare on a qualifying international or transcontinental flight. Individual locations have opened and closed during 2026.

What replaces first class on retrofitted 777-300ERs?

Flagship Suite business class. The retrofit removes eight first class seats and reconfigures the aircraft to 70 Flagship Suites, 44 premium economy and 216 main cabin seats, totalling 330 rather than 304. Each suite has a sliding door, wireless charging and a 4K Bluetooth monitor.

Can I upgrade to Flagship First on American Airlines?

Rarely. Complimentary elite upgrades never apply to long-haul international routes, and systemwide upgrades can move business to first only where a first cabin still exists, against very limited confirmable inventory on a shrinking number of aircraft. Buying the fare is the only dependable route.

What happens if my Flagship First flight changes aircraft?

If American substitutes a retrofitted 777-300ER, the first class cabin no longer exists and you must be reaccommodated, usually into Flagship Suite business class with a fare adjustment. The party that issued your ticket handles the reissue, so keep the booking where someone will pursue it.
