American Airlines baggage allowance

Carry-on: the allowance American did not cut

While American was raising checked bag prices through 2026, it left the cabin allowance alone. Its April 2026 release confirming the new fees also confirmed that Basic Economy keeps "one free personal item and one free carry-on bag" — which separates American from the ultra-low-cost carriers it competes with on price, where the overhead bin is itself a paid product.

Both measurements include wheels and handles, which is where most rejected bags fail: a case sold as "22-inch" often measures 23 inches once its spinner wheels are counted. American publishes no carry-on weight limit for its own flights, so the practical test is whether you can lift the bag into the bin unaided.

The personal item must fit under the seat in front of you. Items that do not count against either allowance include a coat, an umbrella, a diaper bag when travelling with an infant, and duty-free purchases made in the airport.

Checked bag size and weight limits

Two numbers govern whether a bag is accepted at standard price, and they are unrelated: linear size and weight. Exceeding either triggers a surcharge; exceeding both triggers two.

The Australia and New Zealand exception is the one worth remembering, because it is genuinely unusual: economy passengers on those routes get the 32 kg premium-cabin weight limit on their complimentary bags rather than the standard 23 kg. Everywhere else, the 50 lb line is enforced at the scale, and a bag at 51 lb is charged the same as a bag at 53 lb.

Repacking at the counter is free. Moving three pounds into your carry-on costs nothing; leaving them in the checked bag costs a surcharge on every flight coupon.

Domestic and short-haul fees from 9 April 2026

These are American's own published figures, from the release that introduced them. They apply to tickets purchased on or after 9 April 2026 — tickets bought before that date keep the older, lower fees, which is why two people on the same flight can legitimately pay different amounts.

American describes the same pricing as covering domestic flights including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, plus Canada and short-haul international flying. The $5 gap between the two columns is a deliberate discount for paying on aa.com or in the American app rather than at the airport counter, applied to the first and second bags only.

The third-bag figure deserves attention. At $200, a third checked bag costs more than four times the first, so a family shifting a fourth suitcase into a third checked bag is making an expensive decision. Shipping ahead frequently beats it.

Basic Economy is now priced on its own table

From 18 May 2026 American stopped charging Basic Economy the standard rate and gave it a separate, higher fee schedule. The South America rows started earlier, on 9 April.

Two structural details are easy to miss. On the South America, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru rows there is no prepay discount — the airport and online prices are identical, and in the Colombia, Ecuador and Peru markets prepayment is not offered at all, so the bag must be paid for at the counter.

Transatlantic Basic Economy is separately priced again: reporting on American's Europe fees puts the first checked bag at $85 for tickets issued from 18 May 2026, up from $75 before that date.

Long-haul international: where the first bag is still free

The headline fee tables above describe short flying. On American's long-haul network the position reverses, and it is the single biggest reason a Basic Economy transatlantic fare is rarely the bargain it appears.

Long-haul here means American's transatlantic, transpacific, Middle East and deep South America flying — not the short-haul international markets in the previous section, which are priced with the domestic table. So a Main Cabin ticket from Dallas to Madrid includes a checked bag, while a Main Cabin ticket from Dallas to Cancún does not.

Australia and New Zealand are the exception in both directions: free bags regardless of fare class, and the higher 70 lb weight limit. If your itinerary touches those markets, check the allowance rather than assuming Basic Economy behaves as it does elsewhere.

Free bags by AAdvantage status and cabin

Status and cabin allowances do not stack — you receive the better of the two, not the sum.

American confirmed in its April 2026 release that all AAdvantage status members continue to receive complimentary bags, and that most AAdvantage co-branded credit cardmembers get their first eligible checked bag free on domestic American itineraries — a benefit that typically extends to companions on the same domestic reservation. Active-duty US military personnel receive complimentary bags on all American flights, with a larger allowance when travelling on orders.

The status allowance travels with the member and, on most itineraries, with companions booked in the same reservation. Book the family on one record locator rather than four separate ones.

Overweight and oversize charges

These surcharges are levied per bag, per direction, and they sit on top of the standard checked bag fee rather than replacing it. A single heavy suitcase on a return trip is charged four times in total.

The arithmetic is worth doing before you pack. A 54 lb bag checked on a domestic round trip attracts the standard fee twice plus $100 twice — considerably more than the cost of a second, lighter bag. Splitting weight across two bags almost always beats paying an overweight band, and on many itineraries a second bag costs less than the first overweight surcharge.

Both surcharges can apply simultaneously to the same bag if it is heavy and large.

Sports equipment, instruments and mobility aids

American folded most sporting equipment into its standard checked bag rules rather than maintaining a separate surcharge list. A golf bag with clubs, balls, tees and one pair of shoes travels as one checked bag. Ski and snowboard bags containing skis, boots and poles are likewise treated as a single item. In each case, the ordinary fee applies, and the ordinary 50 lb and 62-inch limits apply on top — which is where ski bags and bicycle boxes usually generate an oversize charge.

Musical instruments split three ways. A small instrument that fits the 22 x 14 x 9 in carry-on envelope travels in the cabin as your carry-on. A larger instrument can occupy its own purchased seat. Anything bigger goes as checked baggage within the standard weight and size limits.

Assistive and mobility devices are treated differently again. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes and other assistive devices carried by a passenger with a disability travel free and do not count against any checked allowance — a protection that comes from the US Air Carrier Access Act rather than from American's own fee policy, and one no fare type can remove.

If the bag is delayed, damaged or lost — and where Airlaza fits

Separately, US rules require checked bag fees to be refunded when a bag is delayed beyond 12 hours on a domestic itinerary or 30 hours on an international one. That refund is owed on top of any compensation for the contents, and it is not automatic in practice — ask for it.
