AAdvantage miles and status
Status now runs on Loyalty Points, not miles flown — here is how that works.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not American Airlines. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
AAdvantage runs on two separate currencies. Loyalty Points buy status — 40,000 for Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum, unchanged for a third consecutive year. AAdvantage miles buy flights. Earning one does not spend the other. Call +1-888-890-4009 for a written premium cabin quote.
Two currencies, one account
The single most useful thing to understand about AAdvantage is that miles and Loyalty Points are counted separately and do different jobs. When you earn AAdvantage miles from an eligible activity, you generally also earn one Loyalty Point for each of those base miles. The miles sit in your balance and can be spent on flights. The Loyalty Points sit in a separate counter that measures your progress toward status and resets each year.
| Currency | What it does | Does it get spent |
|---|---|---|
| AAdvantage miles | Redeemed for flights and rewards | Yes, when you redeem |
| Loyalty Points | Qualify you for status and rewards | No, they only accumulate |
This is why redeeming miles never costs you status progress, and why a member can hold Executive Platinum with a near-empty mile balance. It is also why American can be generous with mile redemption rules — cancelling an award ticket and putting the miles back in your account carries no redeposit fee — while keeping status genuinely difficult to reach.
The status year runs from 1 March to the end of February. Loyalty Points collected in that window set the status you hold from the following March, and the counter starts again at zero.
The four published tiers, and what qualifies you
American publishes four earnable tiers plus an invitation-only ConciergeKey level whose criteria the airline does not disclose. For 2026, American confirmed in its own announcement that status and reward levels stay the same, the third consecutive year without a change.
| AAdvantage tier | Loyalty Points | oneworld tier |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 40,000 | Ruby |
| Platinum | 75,000 | Sapphire |
| Platinum Pro | 125,000 | Emerald |
| Executive Platinum | 200,000 | Emerald |
| ConciergeKey | By invitation | Emerald |
The oneworld column is the one frequent international travellers should read first, because it travels far beyond American's own network. Platinum Pro is the tier where the step change happens: Emerald unlocks first class lounges across the alliance and expedited security lanes where the airport offers them, while Sapphire gets business class lounges and Ruby is largely a check-in and seating benefit.
Put differently, the gap between 75,000 and 125,000 Loyalty Points buys more real-world benefit on a British Airways, Qatar Airways or Japan Airlines itinerary than the gap between 125,000 and 200,000 does.
What earns Loyalty Points
Loyalty Points come from a wider set of activities than flying, which is the design change that made status reachable for people who spend more than they fly.
| Source | Loyalty Points earned |
|---|---|
| American Airlines flights | 1 per eligible base mile |
| oneworld and partner flights | 1 per eligible base mile |
| Co-branded card spending | 1 per dollar spent |
| AAdvantage eShopping | 1 per eligible mile |
| AAdvantage Dining | 1 per eligible mile |
| Hotel and car partners | 1 per eligible mile |
The exclusion that catches people out is bonus miles. Miles from a credit card welcome offer, or from a promotional bonus, are credited as bonus miles rather than base miles, and bonus miles do not generate Loyalty Points. A large sign-up bonus can therefore add tens of thousands of miles to your balance and move your status counter by nothing at all.
The practical consequence for anyone chasing a tier: everyday card spending, at one Loyalty Point per dollar regardless of category, is a steady and predictable earner. Welcome bonuses are not, however attractive the headline number looks.
Earning miles when you fly American
Miles on American-marketed flights are earned on the fare paid, not the distance flown, and status multiplies the rate.
| Status | Base plus bonus | Miles per dollar |
|---|---|---|
| No status | 5x base | 5 |
| Gold | 5x plus 40% | 7 |
| Platinum | 5x plus 60% | 8 |
| Platinum Pro | 5x plus 80% | 9 |
| Executive Platinum | 5x plus 120% | 11 |
The base figure is five miles per dollar of qualifying fare for every member. Elite bonuses run from 40 per cent at Gold to 120 per cent at Executive Platinum, so an Executive Platinum earns 11 miles per dollar against an unstatused member's five — a little over double.
Two structural notes. Because earning is revenue-based on American-marketed flights, a cheap long flight earns far less than an expensive short one, which reverses the intuition anyone who learned frequent flyer programmes in the distance-based era brings to it. And flights marketed by oneworld partners are earned on a different basis again, tied to distance and booking class rather than to the fare you paid, which is why a partner-operated long-haul sector can out-earn an American-operated one on the same route.
Loyalty Point Rewards: what the milestones give you
Beyond status, American hands out rewards as your Loyalty Point counter passes fixed marks during the year. At most thresholds you choose from a list rather than receiving a fixed item.
| Threshold | Representative reward choice |
|---|---|
| 15,000 | Group 5 boarding plus one choice |
| 60,000 | Hotel and car partner status |
| 175,000 | Two systemwide upgrades, or bonus miles |
| 250,000 | Two choices, including two upgrades |
| 400,000 | Two choices, including lounge passes |
| 1,000,000 | Four systemwide upgrades, or a mile rebate |
American added new options from 1 March 2026: American Airlines Vacations credits worth between $250 and $500, premium retail rewards through the AAdvantage Exchange marketplace, and a limited-edition centennial luggage tag available at every status tier for the airline's hundredth year. Inflight food and beverage coupons, New York Times subscriptions and AAdvantage gift cards were announced to follow later in 2026.
The choice that matters most for anyone reading a premium cabin page is the systemwide upgrade, available as a selection at 175,000 and 250,000 Loyalty Points and in larger quantities at the highest thresholds. It is the only free instrument that reaches Flagship Business on a long-haul flight.
What each tier actually delivers on the day
Status is worth what it changes at the airport, not what it says on the card.
| Benefit | Gold | Platinum | Plat Pro | Exec Plat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free checked bags | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| Upgrade window | 24 hrs | 48 hrs | 72 hrs | 100 hrs |
| Boarding group | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| oneworld lounges | No | Business | First | First |
Complimentary upgrades operate on the domestic network, Hawaii and short-haul international routes only, and they never apply to American's long-haul international flying. The upgrade window is when your request becomes eligible for processing, not when you are answered; lists continue to clear through check-in and at the gate.
Two further points about the checked bag benefit. Status and cabin allowances do not add together — you receive the better of the two, not the sum — and the allowance generally extends to companions travelling on the same reservation, which is a strong argument for booking a family on one record rather than several.
ConciergeKey sits above all of this with a 120-hour upgrade window, but American does not publish how members are selected.
What changed for 2026
Two changes are worth knowing about, and they pull in opposite directions.
The first is stability. American has now held its status thresholds and reward levels flat for three consecutive years, at a time when several competitors have raised theirs. If you qualified in 2025, the same effort qualifies you again.
The second is a genuinely new benefit. On 6 January 2026 American launched complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T, free to AAdvantage members at every tier — including members with no status at all — on aircraft equipped with Viasat or Intelsat satellite connectivity. That covers the entire narrowbody and dual-class regional fleet plus the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9, which is the large majority of American's departures. You do not need to be an AT&T customer; you do need an AAdvantage number, and joining costs nothing.
For an occasional American flyer who has never bothered to enrol, that single benefit is now a reason to open an account before the next flight, quite separately from any interest in status.
Spending miles, and keeping them
American does not publish a fixed award chart for its own flights, so the mileage price of a seat moves with demand, date and route. Partner awards through oneworld carriers are priced separately and often more predictably, which is why the same destination can cost very different numbers of miles depending on who operates the flight.
| Rule | Position |
|---|---|
| Award redeposit fee | None, cancel before departure |
| Miles expiry | After 24 months of no activity |
| Expiry reset | Any earning or redeeming activity |
| Under-21 members | Miles do not expire |
| Co-branded cardholders | Primary cardholder miles do not expire |
The 24-month inactivity rule is generous but absolute for everyone outside those two exemptions, and it is triggered by activity of any size — a small shopping-portal earn resets the clock as effectively as a flight. Members under 21 become subject to the rule on their 21st birthday and need activity within 24 months of it.
Where miles run out of road is long-haul premium cabins, which price at levels that make an entire year's earning disappear on one ticket. Airlaza is an IATA and ARC accredited agency; we quote Flagship Business, Flagship First and Premium Economy fares in writing, including partner routings, so you can price a paid seat against what your miles would actually buy.
Frequently asked questions
How many Loyalty Points do I need for AAdvantage status in 2026?
Forty thousand Loyalty Points for Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum. American confirmed these are unchanged for 2026, the third consecutive year without a rise. The status year runs from 1 March to the end of February.
What is the difference between AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points?
Miles are spent on flights; Loyalty Points are counted toward status and are never spent. Earning one base mile from an eligible activity generally earns one Loyalty Point at the same time, so redeeming miles for a ticket does not reduce your status progress in any way.
Do credit card bonus miles count toward AAdvantage status?
No. Welcome offers and promotional bonuses are credited as bonus miles, and bonus miles do not generate Loyalty Points. Ordinary co-branded card spending does count, at one Loyalty Point per dollar regardless of category, which makes routine spending far more useful for status than a headline sign-up bonus.
How many miles do I earn per dollar on American Airlines?
Five miles per dollar of qualifying fare with no status, rising with elite bonuses: seven at Gold with a 40 per cent bonus, eight at Platinum with 60 per cent, nine at Platinum Pro with 80 per cent and eleven at Executive Platinum with 120 per cent. Partner flights are earned differently.
Do AAdvantage miles expire?
Yes, after 24 months without any earning or redeeming activity. Any activity, however small, resets the clock for another 24 months. Members under 21 and primary cardholders on an AAdvantage co-branded credit card are exempt, though the under-21 exemption ends on the member's 21st birthday.
What oneworld status does AAdvantage give me?
Gold maps to oneworld Ruby, Platinum to Sapphire, and both Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum to Emerald. Emerald is the meaningful jump: it opens first class lounges across the alliance and expedited security where offered, while Sapphire gets business class lounges and Ruby covers check-in and seating.
What are Loyalty Point Rewards on American Airlines?
They are milestone rewards granted as your Loyalty Point counter passes fixed marks during the year, starting at 15,000 and running to five million. At most thresholds you choose from a list. Systemwide upgrades appear as a choice at 175,000 and 250,000 Loyalty Points.
How do I get free Wi-Fi as an AAdvantage member?
American launched complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T on 6 January 2026, free to AAdvantage members at every tier including members with no status. It works on aircraft fitted with Viasat or Intelsat connectivity, covering the narrowbody and dual-class regional fleet plus the 787-8 and 787-9.
Is there a fee to cancel an AAdvantage award ticket?
No. American removed award redeposit fees, so cancelling an award before departure returns the miles to your account without charge. Taxes and carrier-imposed charges paid in cash are handled separately. This applies to awards issued through AAdvantage, not to tickets issued by another programme.
How many free checked bags does AAdvantage status give?
One for Gold, two for Platinum, and three each for Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum, on every American flight. Status and cabin allowances do not add together — you receive the higher of the two. Companions travelling on the same reservation generally share the member's allowance.

How Airlaza quotes work
We are an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency. Every quote states the fare family, the change and cancellation terms and whether a refund is cash or voucher — in writing, before you pay. No card details are taken on this site.
