American Airlines business class
Flagship Business and the new Flagship Suite are not the same cabin — the aircraft decides.

Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not American Airlines. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
American Airlines sells long-haul business class as Flagship Business, but two very different seats carry that name in 2026. The new Flagship Suite, with a sliding door, flies on the Boeing 787-9P and the Airbus A321XLR. Most widebodies still have the older reverse-herringbone seat. Call +1-888-890-4009 for a written quote.
One cabin name, two different seats
Flagship Business is a brand, not a specification. Book it on a Chicago–London 787-9P and you get a suite with a door, a 4K Bluetooth monitor and wireless charging. Book the same fare class on a 787-8 to Madrid and you get American's previous long-haul business seat: still lie-flat, still 1-2-1 with direct aisle access, but open to the aisle with a smaller screen and no door.
This matters more on American than on most carriers because the airline is mid-programme. The retrofit of the 777-300ER fleet began with aircraft N718AN, which returned to Dallas/Fort Worth from Hong Kong on 13 August 2026 as the first of twenty conversions, and the 777-200ER is queued behind it. Until those are finished, the aircraft type on your flight number decides the seat you sit in — not the fare code, not the cabin name and not the price.
The practical rule for 2026: check the equipment before you book, and check it again after a schedule change, because American swaps widebody types on transatlantic routes routinely.
Flagship Suite: the seat with the door
The Flagship Suite is arranged 1-2-1 in a reverse herringbone, so every passenger reaches the aisle without climbing over anyone. Each suite has a sliding privacy door, a fully flat bed of roughly 79 inches, a seat width of about 21 inches, wireless charging, Bluetooth pairing to a 4K seatback monitor, and a three-part lighting set — ambient strip, reading lamp and a sconce with four brightness levels.
| Suite feature | What American fits |
|---|---|
| Layout | 1-2-1 reverse herringbone |
| Privacy | Sliding door at every suite |
| Bed length | About 79 inches, fully flat |
| Seat width | About 21 inches |
| Screen | 4K monitor with Bluetooth audio |
| Power | Wireless charging pad plus outlets |
Bedding and amenities are supplied per suite: a duvet, a dual-sided pillow, slippers, Bang and Olufsen noise-cancelling headphones and an amenity kit. Because 2026 is American's centennial year, the airline has been running commemorative "100" menus, amenity kits and pyjamas through its Flagship cabins, which is a soft-product change rather than a permanent one.
Flagship Suite Preferred: the eight seats worth asking for
On the 787-9P, eight of the 51 suites are designated Flagship Suite Preferred. They are the bulkhead seats in the front row of each of the two business cabins — 1A, 1L, 2D, 2H, 10D, 10H, 10L and 11A on the seat map. The gain is physical: a larger footwell, more legroom and a wider counter surface opposite the seat, so the suite feels less like a pod and more like a small room.
| Element | Flagship Suite | Suite Preferred |
|---|---|---|
| Seats per 787-9P | 51 in total | 8 of those 51 |
| Position | Throughout both cabins | Front row of each cabin |
| Footwell | Standard | Larger |
| Soft product | Standard bedding set | Extra bedding and pyjamas |
The soft product differs as well as the space: Suite Preferred passengers receive additional bedding and pyjamas that the rest of the cabin does not get as standard. American does not publish a single fixed surcharge for these seats, so what you pay to sit in one depends on the fare and your AAdvantage tier at the time of selection. If a Preferred suite is the point of the trip, say so at the quoting stage rather than at check-in, when eight seats across a whole aircraft are long gone.
Which aircraft have which business class right now
This is the table to work from, because it is the only thing that reliably predicts your seat.
| Aircraft | Business seats | Seat type |
|---|---|---|
| Boeing 787-9P | 51 | Flagship Suite with door |
| Airbus A321XLR | 20 | Flagship Suite, 1-1 |
| Boeing 787-9 standard | 30 | Previous Flagship Business |
| Boeing 787-8 | 20 | Previous Flagship Business |
| Boeing 777-300ER retrofit | 70 | Flagship Suite with door |
| Boeing 777-300ER original | 52 | Previous Flagship Business |
| Boeing 777-200ER | Retrofit not yet begun | Previous Flagship Business |
The A321XLR is the outlier and the most interesting seat in the fleet. It is a single-aisle aircraft carrying 20 Flagship Suites in a 1-1 herringbone with roughly 22 inches of width and 78 inches of pitch, alongside 12 premium economy seats and 123 in the main cabin. American is the only US operator of the type, and it uses it on premium transcontinental flying and on the seasonal JFK–Edinburgh service, which ran 8 March to 24 October 2026. Twenty business seats is a small cabin, so these flights sell through early.
Flagship Business Plus: the fare above business class
American sells a higher business fare called Flagship Business Plus. It does not buy a different seat — you sit in the same cabin as everyone else in Flagship Business. What it buys is ground service and baggage.
| Included with Business Plus | Standard Flagship Business |
|---|---|
| Flagship First check-in where offered | Priority check-in |
| Flagship First Dining where offered | Flagship Lounge access |
| Third complimentary checked bag | Two or three bags by route |
| Arrivals Lounge at London Heathrow | Not included |
The genuinely exclusive elements are the first two rows of that table. Flagship First check-in and Flagship First Dining cannot be bought any other way — they come with a First Class ticket, with a Business Plus fare, or with certain AAdvantage status. Everything else in the fare is available to any business class passenger. Business Plus is sold on the Boeing 777-200, 787-8 and 787-9, so it is not offered on every long-haul departure.
Whether it is worth the difference depends entirely on whether your departure airport has a Flagship Lounge with a Flagship First Dining room in it. On a route without one, you are paying for a third bag.
Lounges before the flight, and who actually gets in
Flagship Lounge access is tied to the flight, not only to the ticket. You need to be travelling in first or business class on a qualifying long-haul international or transcontinental flight marketed and operated by American or a oneworld airline.
| Traveller | Flagship Lounge access |
|---|---|
| Flagship Business, qualifying route | Yes, on day of departure |
| AAdvantage Executive Platinum | Yes on qualifying international |
| Platinum Pro and Platinum | Yes on qualifying international |
| oneworld Emerald or Sapphire | Yes on qualifying flights |
| Business Plus or First ticket | Yes, plus First Dining |
Two limits catch people out. The transcontinental qualification is narrow: it applies to nonstop New York JFK flights to Los Angeles or San Francisco, and those passengers are not permitted a guest. Passengers on qualifying international routes are allowed one guest free of charge. And a business class ticket on a short-haul international sector does not qualify at all — Flagship Lounges exist for the long-haul network.
On the ground and in the air: bags, boarding and Wi-Fi
Flagship Business carries the premium checked baggage weight limit of 70 lb (32 kg) per bag rather than the 50 lb (23 kg) applied in main cabin and premium economy, and Flagship Business Plus and Flagship First tickets include three complimentary checked bags. Boarding is at the front of the sequence: first and business class travellers board with the preboarding group, ahead of Group 1.
Connectivity changed materially at the start of 2026. American launched complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T on 6 January 2026, available to any AAdvantage member at any tier on aircraft fitted with Viasat or Intelsat satellite connectivity. That covers the entire narrowbody and dual-class regional fleet plus the 787-8 and 787-9, so on most Flagship Business departures the internet is free provided you have joined AAdvantage, which costs nothing.
Dining is multi-course with a wine list, and pre-ordering a main course before departure is the reliable way to get the dish you want rather than the one left over.
Where Flagship Suites actually operate
The suite is concentrated on a short list of routes, because the aircraft that carry it are a small part of a very large fleet. On the 787-9P, transatlantic flying to London Heathrow dominates: services from Chicago O'Hare, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Dallas/Fort Worth. Philadelphia–Zurich is the other European route. Long-haul Pacific and South American deployment covers Dallas/Fort Worth to Auckland, seasonally in the southern summer, Dallas/Fort Worth to Brisbane, and Dallas/Fort Worth to Buenos Aires.
The A321XLR flies its 20-suite cabin on premium transcontinental routes — JFK to Los Angeles from December 2025, JFK to San Francisco from 7 May 2026, and Boston to Los Angeles from 2 July 2026 — plus the seasonal Edinburgh service.
Route assignments move with the seasons and with delivery schedules, and American publishes no guarantee that a given flight number keeps a given aircraft. The only dependable approach is to confirm equipment at the point of booking. Airlaza is IATA and ARC accredited and quotes Flagship Business in writing with the aircraft type named in the quote, so the seat you agreed to is the seat you are ticketed for.
Buying it, versus trying to reach it
Long-haul Flagship Business is bought far more often than it is upgraded into, and the reason is structural. American's complimentary elite upgrades do not extend to long-haul international routes at all. Systemwide upgrades do, but they are earned at high Loyalty Point thresholds and then waitlisted against limited confirmable inventory. Basic Economy is excluded from upgrades entirely.
That leaves the paid fare as the only route with a defined outcome. The comparison worth making is not fare against fare but delivered cabin against delivered cabin: a Flagship Suite on a 787-9P and the previous business seat on a 787-8 are sold under one name at similar prices and are not the same product. Add the routing options a single-airline website will not show you — oneworld partner metal, split ticketing across hubs, seasonal capacity — and the price of a real suite frequently falls below the obvious one.
Frequently asked questions
What is American Airlines Flagship Business?
Flagship Business is American's long-haul international and premium transcontinental business class, with lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 arrangement, Flagship Lounge access on qualifying routes and multi-course dining. Two seat generations carry the name in 2026: the new Flagship Suite with a door, and the previous reverse-herringbone seat.
Which American Airlines planes have Flagship Suites?
The Boeing 787-9P carries 51 Flagship Suites and the Airbus A321XLR carries 20. Retrofitted Boeing 777-300ERs carry 70, with the first converted aircraft returning to Dallas/Fort Worth on 13 August 2026. Standard 787-9s, 787-8s and 777-200ERs still have the previous business seat.
What is Flagship Suite Preferred?
Flagship Suite Preferred describes eight bulkhead suites on the 787-9P, four at the front of each business cabin. They offer a larger footwell, extra legroom and a wider counter, plus additional bedding and pyjamas. Seat numbers are 1A, 1L, 2D, 2H, 10D, 10H, 10L and 11A.
Is Flagship Business Plus worth paying for?
It buys ground service, not a better seat. You gain Flagship First check-in, Flagship First Dining, a third checked bag and the Heathrow Arrivals Lounge, and it is sold on the 777-200, 787-8 and 787-9 only. Its value depends on whether your departure airport actually has First Dining.
Does American Airlines business class include lounge access?
Yes, on qualifying long-haul international and JFK transcontinental flights, where Flagship Business tickets grant same-day Flagship Lounge access. International passengers may bring one guest free; transcontinental passengers may not bring any. Short-haul international business class does not qualify for Flagship Lounge entry.
How many checked bags does Flagship Business include?
Flagship Business carries the premium 70 lb, or 32 kg, weight limit per bag rather than the standard 50 lb. Flagship Business Plus and Flagship First fares include three complimentary checked bags. The exact free allowance for a plain Flagship Business ticket varies by route, so confirm it on your itinerary.
What is American Airlines business class like on the A321XLR?
It is a genuine lie-flat suite on a single-aisle aircraft: 20 Flagship Suites in a 1-1 herringbone with roughly 22 inches of width and 78 inches of pitch, alongside 12 premium economy and 123 main cabin seats. American flies it on premium transcontinental routes and seasonally to Edinburgh.
Is Wi-Fi free in American Airlines business class?
Since 6 January 2026, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T is available to AAdvantage members of any tier on aircraft fitted with Viasat or Intelsat connectivity, which includes the 787-8 and 787-9. Membership is free to join, but you must be enrolled and signed in.
Can I upgrade to Flagship Business on a long-haul flight?
Not with complimentary elite upgrades, which never apply to American's long-haul international network. The realistic routes are a systemwide upgrade earned at a high Loyalty Point threshold and then waitlisted, or buying the cabin. Basic Economy tickets are excluded from every upgrade instrument.
How do I know which business class seat my flight has?
Check the aircraft type on the booking, then match it: 787-9P and A321XLR mean Flagship Suites, 787-8 and standard 787-9 mean the previous seat, and 777-300ERs are mixed while retrofits continue. Re-check after any schedule change, since American swaps widebody types frequently.
