Qatar Airways special assistance
What to request, the deadline for requesting it, and what happens at the airport.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Qatar Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Qatar Airways asks for special assistance requests at least 48 hours before departure, added at booking or later through Manage Booking, and carries passenger-owned wheelchairs free of charge outside the baggage allowance. Some conditions need a MEDIF medical clearance form; a few need a travelling escort. Airlaza's desk is on +1-888-890-4009, 24/7.

How to request assistance, and by when
There are three points at which assistance can be added: during booking, afterwards through Manage Booking on qatarairways.com or the mobile app, or by contacting a Qatar Airways office or service centre directly. The request is attached to your booking as a coded service request, which is what actually reaches the ground handlers at each airport on your itinerary.
Qatar's own guidance is to make the request at least 48 hours before departure. That is not an arbitrary number — it matches the notification period written into European Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006, and it is the point at which airports and handling agents at both ends of the flight can be reliably rostered.
| Request | Qatar Airways timing |
|---|---|
| Wheelchair assistance at the airport | At least 48 hours before departure |
| Battery and dimension details for your own powered wheelchair | At least 48 hours before departure |
| MEDIF medical clearance form | No less than 48 hours and no more than 7 days before each flight |
| Change in a passenger's medical status or requirement | Notify at least 48 hours before departure |
| Service dog request, on eligible routes | At least 48 hours before departure, via a Qatar office or service centre |
| Special meal | At least 24 hours before departure |
Later requests are often accommodated, but Qatar words this as an expectation rather than a guarantee — the closer to departure, the more it depends on the individual airport.
The assistance codes, and why the right one matters
Assistance is booked using IATA special service codes, and the code is the whole message. Ask for "a wheelchair" and you may be given the lightest level; a passenger who cannot climb stairs but is coded WCHR will meet an aircraft with steps and no ambulift arranged.
| Code | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| WCHR | Wheelchair for distance — you can walk short distances and manage steps |
| WCHS | Wheelchair for steps — you cannot climb stairs, but can move to and from a seat |
| WCHC | Wheelchair for cabin seat — completely immobile; carried to the seat, aisle chair required |
| DPNA | Developmental, intellectual or cognitive disability needing assistance, including autism |
| BLND | Blind or visually impaired passenger |
| DEAF | Deaf or hearing impaired passenger |
Qatar also carries an on-board wheelchair for moving between the seat and the lavatory, and its aircraft lavatories are fitted with handrails. If you use a WCHC-level service, confirm the aisle chair on your specific aircraft when you book rather than assuming it. Two codes can be combined where they both apply — a deaf passenger who also needs a wheelchair for distance should have both filed against the booking.
Medical clearance: when Qatar Airways requires a MEDIF
Most passengers with a disability need no medical clearance at all. Qatar states plainly that no medical clearance or special form is required for passengers who only need assistance at the airport, or with embarkation and disembarkation. A stable, permanent disability is not a medical case.
The MEDIF — Medical Information Form — comes into play where fitness to fly is genuinely in question: recent surgery, an unstable or acute condition, a requirement for supplemental oxygen in flight, or a stretcher booking. The form is completed in English by the attending physician, and it goes to the airline within a defined window rather than as early as possible.
| MEDIF requirement | Qatar Airways condition |
|---|---|
| Submission window | Not less than 48 hours, and not more than 7 days, before each flight |
| Applies to | Each flight separately — outbound and return |
| Completed by | The passenger's nominated attending physician, in English |
| Medical certificate validity | Dated within 10 days of the flight date |
| Final decision | Qatar Airways Medical Centre is the final authority on fitness to fly |
That last line is the one to plan around. A doctor's letter is evidence, not clearance — the airline's own medical department decides, and it decides on its own timeline.
Travelling with your own wheelchair or mobility aid
Wheelchairs and mobility aids owned by the passenger are carried free of charge and are not counted against the baggage allowance. That applies whether the device travels in the hold or is used up to the aircraft door. Give Qatar the dimensions and battery details at least 48 hours out, because the handling method depends on both.
Battery rules follow the dangerous goods framework, and the key distinction is whether the battery stays attached to the chair.
| Powered wheelchair battery | Qatar Airways rule |
|---|---|
| Lithium battery securely attached to the mobility aid | No watt-hour limit applies |
| Lithium battery removed from the mobility aid | Must not exceed 300 Wh, carried in the cabin in a protective pouch |
| Spare wet, non-spillable battery | Maximum one |
| Spare nickel metal hydride or dry batteries | Maximum two |
| Any removed or spare battery | Terminals protected, carried in the passenger cabin — not in the hold |
Practical advice from wheelchair users who fly this route regularly: photograph the chair from several angles at the gate, label the removable parts, and carry a printed set of handling instructions taped to the frame. Nothing in the rules requires it, and everything in the experience of gate-checking a powered chair recommends it.
Stretcher travel, oxygen and medical escorts
Stretcher carriage on Qatar Airways is a tightly bounded product, and the conditions are worth reading before any arrangements are made. It is available in Economy Class only, on direct, non-stop flights, and Qatar does not accept stretcher requests on transit itineraries — a routing through Doha with an onward connection is outside the service.
Escort requirements are firm. A stretcher passenger must be accompanied by two medical escorts travelling in the same cabin, and stretcher or incubator cases must be accompanied by a medical escort unless a Qatar Airways doctor authorises otherwise.
What the airline supplies is also defined narrowly. Qatar provides the stretcher and supplemental oxygen on board. Everything else — ventilator, incubator, BIPAP, CPAP and other equipment — is the responsibility of the passenger, the treating doctor or the hospital, as is arranging an ambulance at departure and arrival. A MEDIF is required in all of these cases.
If you need supplemental oxygen without a stretcher, that too runs through the MEDIF process, and any personal device must be cleared with Qatar before travel.
When an escort or safety assistant is required
This is the condition that most often surprises people, and it is better learned now than at check-in. Qatar Airways cabin crew do not provide personal care. They will read the menu aloud, describe where items sit on the tray and open packaging — but they do not assist with eating, and they do not assist with using the toilet.
Where a passenger requires that level of personal care in flight, a travelling companion has to provide it. Separately, Qatar states that a passenger with an intellectual or developmental disability who is unable to follow cabin crew instructions must be accompanied by an escort. The reasoning is safety instructions and evacuation, not capability in any broader sense, and the same logic sits behind similar rules across the industry.
The escort travels as a normal fare-paying passenger. Qatar does not publish a discounted companion fare for this, so build it into the budget from the start. Where a booking needs a specific seating arrangement so the escort sits alongside — which is the entire point — get the seats confirmed at ticketing rather than hoping for it at check-in.
Service dogs in the cabin: which routes qualify
Qatar Airways accepts trained service dogs in the passenger cabin, free of charge, on specific regulated routes — those to and from the EU, the USA, Canada and Australia. On every other route, a service dog is still carried free of charge, but as checked baggage in the hold.
| Point | Qatar Airways condition |
|---|---|
| Animals accepted as service animals | Dogs only — no other species, including psychiatric service animals |
| Maximum per passenger | 2 dogs |
| Cabin carriage | Select regulated routes: EU, USA, Canada, Australia |
| All other routes | Carried free of charge, in the hold |
| How to request | Contact a Qatar Airways service centre or local office — not self-service |
| Notice required | At least 48 hours before departure |
The definition Qatar applies is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Emotional support animals are not covered by that definition. Because route eligibility drives everything here, confirm the cabin rule for your exact routing, including the Doha connection, before booking — a dog that may travel in cabin on the transatlantic sector may not on the onward leg.
Autism, hidden disabilities and Doha's Muzn sensory room
Doha is unusually well equipped here, and the facilities are underused because few people know they exist. The booking-side step is the DPNA code, entered at booking or check-in, which flags the need for assistance and lets staff direct you to the right support.
At Hamad International, the Muzn Lounge is a dedicated sensory room for children aged 2 to 12 with autism or other disabilities. It is free of charge, open 24 hours, and built as a multi-sensory space rather than a playroom — soft lighting, bubble tubes, interactive projections, electronic movement mats, and seating and sounds designed to acclimatise a child to the aircraft cabin they are about to board.
Hamad International also joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme in 2026. Wearing the lanyard is voluntary and signals that a passenger may need more time, clearer communication or a quieter space. Lanyards are collected free from information desks in the check-in area, and for transferring passengers from desks in the Lamp Bear and ORCHARD areas. Staff across the airport and Qatar Airways Group have been briefed to recognise the symbol.
Your legal rights, and where they come from
Airline policy is one layer. Where you fly from and to adds another, and in some jurisdictions the law is stronger than the airline's own wording.
| Where it applies | What the law provides |
|---|---|
| EU — Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006 | Airlines and tour operators may not refuse a reservation or boarding because of disability or reduced mobility. Assistance at EU airports is free of charge on departure, arrival and transit, where notified at least 48 hours ahead |
| UK | The same 1107/2006 framework was retained in UK law and is enforced by the Civil Aviation Authority |
| US — Air Carrier Access Act | Governs treatment of passengers with disabilities on flights to, from and within the United States, including handling of mobility devices |
Two caveats, stated honestly. These regimes apply by geography, so a Doha–Bangkok sector is not covered by EU law even though a Doha–Paris sector is. And a right to assistance is not a right to be carried in any medical condition — clearance and escort requirements remain lawful conditions where they are applied consistently.
If Airlaza issued your ticket, we file the assistance codes with the booking and confirm them with Qatar in writing before you travel. Call +1-888-890-4009.
Frequently asked questions
How do I request wheelchair assistance with Qatar Airways?
Add it during booking, or afterwards through Manage Booking on qatarairways.com or the app, or by calling a Qatar Airways office. Qatar asks for the request at least 48 hours before departure so ground handlers at both airports are notified. Specify WCHR, WCHS or WCHC rather than just saying wheelchair.
How far in advance must I request Qatar Airways special assistance?
At least 48 hours before departure for wheelchair assistance, powered wheelchair battery details and service dog requests. Special meals need 24 hours. A MEDIF medical clearance form has a narrower window: not less than 48 hours and not more than seven days before each individual flight.
What is the difference between WCHR, WCHS and WCHC?
WCHR is a wheelchair for distance, for someone who can walk short distances and manage steps. WCHS covers a passenger who cannot climb stairs but can move to a seat unaided. WCHC is for a completely immobile passenger who must be carried to the seat using an aisle chair.
Does Qatar Airways charge for wheelchair assistance?
No. Airport assistance is provided free of charge, and under EU Regulation 1107/2006 it must be free at EU airports where notified 48 hours ahead. Your own wheelchair or mobility aid is also carried free of charge and does not count against your checked baggage allowance.
Do I need a MEDIF form to fly with Qatar Airways?
Only if fitness to fly is in question. Qatar states no medical clearance is needed for passengers who simply require assistance at the airport or with boarding. A MEDIF is required for recent surgery, unstable conditions, in-flight oxygen or a stretcher, and Qatar Airways Medical Centre decides.
Can I take my own electric wheelchair on Qatar Airways?
Yes, free of charge and outside your baggage allowance, provided you give dimensions and battery details at least 48 hours before departure. A lithium battery that stays securely attached has no watt-hour limit. A removed battery must not exceed 300 Wh and travels in the cabin.
Does Qatar Airways allow service dogs in the cabin?
On specific regulated routes only — flights to and from the EU, USA, Canada and Australia. Elsewhere the dog is carried free of charge in the hold. Only dogs qualify, a maximum of two per passenger, and the request must go through a Qatar office at least 48 hours ahead.
Will Qatar Airways cabin crew help me eat or use the toilet?
No. Cabin crew will read the menu, describe the tray layout and open packaging, but they do not assist with eating or with using the toilet. A passenger needing that level of personal care must travel with a companion who can provide it throughout the flight.
What support does Qatar Airways offer autistic passengers?
Enter the DPNA code at booking or check-in so staff know assistance is needed. At Hamad International, the Muzn Lounge is a free 24-hour sensory room for children aged 2 to 12. The airport also runs the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard scheme from its information desks.
Can Qatar Airways refuse to carry a disabled passenger?
Under EU Regulation 1107/2006, airlines may not refuse a reservation or boarding on grounds of disability, and the UK retains the same framework. Conditions remain lawful, though: medical clearance where fitness to fly is in question, and an escort where a passenger cannot follow crew safety instructions.
