Qatar Airways premium economy

What Qatar actually sells between Economy and Qsuite, and on which aircraft.

No — Qatar Airways does not sell a premium economy cabin anywhere on its network, and has said repeatedly it does not intend to. What it sells is Comfort+, an extra-legroom economy seat inherited from leased ex-Cathay Pacific and ex-Virgin Australia Boeing 777s, with standard economy service. Airlaza: +1-888-890-4009.

The straight answer: there is no Qatar Airways premium economy cabin

Qatar Airways sells three cabins, not four: Economy, Business and — on the A380 and six ex-Cathay Pacific 777-300ERs only — First. There is no fourth cabin between economy and business with its own crew, its own meal service, its own check-in queue and its own fare code. Emirates launched one. Qantas, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Finnair all have one. Qatar does not.

The position was set out bluntly. In December 2020, then-CEO Akbar Al Baker told the trade press: "I have always mentioned that we will never introduce a premium economy in Qatar Airways," adding that in his view 99 out of 100 premium economy products in the industry were uncomfortable and amounted to repackaged economy sold at a markup.

Two CEOs have followed him — Badr Mohammed Al Meer from November 2023, and Hamad Ali Al-Khater, appointed with immediate effect on 7 December 2025 as Bloomberg and others reported. Neither has publicly reversed the policy. So if a booking site is offering you "Qatar Airways premium economy", it is almost certainly selling you Comfort+, which is a seat, not a cabin.

What Comfort+ actually is

Comfort+ is Qatar's name for a block of genuine premium economy seats that arrived on aircraft it leased, not seats it specified. When Airbus A350 deliveries stalled during Qatar's paint-surface dispute with the manufacturer, the airline leased Boeing 777s from December 2021 — some previously flown by Cathay Pacific, some by Virgin Australia. Those aircraft came with premium economy cabins already installed.

Rather than strip the seats out, Qatar monetised them. You buy an economy ticket, then pay to sit in one. Simple Flying's assessment is the fair one: the seat is the only improvement. Everything served over it, and everything that happens before you board, is economy. That is precisely what distinguishes a seat product from a cabin product, and it is why Qatar has never marketed Comfort+ as a fourth class.

The seat specs, and how they compare to Qatar economy

The physical seat is not a compromise. On both airframe types it is a real premium economy seat, and on the ex-Virgin Australia frames it is a very good one.

*Figures as reported by Simple Flying and Executive Traveller from their own reviews and seat data; Qatar does not publish a Comfort+ specification sheet.*

The 2-4-2 layout is the underrated part. In economy on a 777, six passengers per row are stuck without direct aisle access; in Comfort+ that drops to four, and the window pairs mean a couple can sit together with nobody beside them. At 41 inches of pitch, the ex-Virgin seats offer more legroom than several airlines' published premium economy standards.

What Comfort+ costs, and when it is worth it

Qatar prices Comfort+ as a per-sector add-on rather than as a fare, so the number moves with route and demand and is quoted at the point of purchase rather than published.

Route exampleReported Comfort+ chargeSource of the figure
Doha to European citiesAround €150, roughly US$170Simple Flying
Phuket–DohaAround AUD 245Executive Traveller
All routesQuoted per sector at booking or in Manage BookingQatar's seat-selection flow

Weigh it against the two things it is not. It is not lounge access, and it is not a meal upgrade — those come with a business fare. It is roughly six to nine extra inches of legroom, two fewer people in your row, and a better chance of an aisle, for a fee that on a long sector is a fraction of the business fare difference.

It is worth paying when three conditions line up: the sector is long, the aircraft genuinely has the cabin, and you are travelling as a pair who can take the window couple. It is poor value on a short Doha feeder sector, and it is no value at all if your itinerary switches to an A350 or 787 at any point, because those aircraft have no Comfort+ at all.

Which aircraft have Comfort+, and which never will

Comfort+ exists only on leased frames. It is not part of Qatar's own cabin specification, so no aircraft Qatar orders new will arrive with it.

The ex-Cathay aircraft are the oddity of the whole fleet: a single airframe carrying a Cathay First Class cabin, Cathay business, Cathay premium economy sold as Comfort+, and Qatar economy — four cabins, none of them Qatar's own design, flying in Qatar colours. Because these are leases, the sensible planning assumption is that Comfort+ disappears when the aircraft go back, not that it spreads.

Economy Comfort is not Comfort+ — the naming trap

Qatar sells economy under four fare families, and the top one is called Comfort. That is a different thing from Comfort+, on a different part of the booking flow, and the similarity costs people money every week.

Economy Convenience30 kgStandard seats included
Economy Comfort35 kgStandard, preferred and extra legroom included

*Weight-concept allowances as documented by Upgraded Points; on Americas and Africa routes Qatar switches to a piece concept, typically one bag at 23 kg on Lite and two on the other three.*

Economy Comfort is a fare family: more baggage, better change rules, higher Avios accrual, and free choice of preferred and extra-legroom seats. Comfort+ is a physical seat on nine leased aircraft. You can hold an Economy Comfort fare on an A350 and have no Comfort+ available anywhere on the aircraft. You can also buy Comfort+ on top of an Economy Lite fare and still be carrying 20 kg. They do not interact.

The A380 upper deck: the closest thing Qatar has

Frequent flyers have their own workaround, and it does not cost extra. Qatar's A380 has a small economy cabin on the upper deck, behind business, that is physically separated from the 400-plus seat main-deck cabin below.

The upper deck holds 56 economy seats across rows 25 to 32, laid out 2-4-2 rather than the 3-4-3 of the lower deck. The seat itself is identical — a Recaro CL3710 at roughly 31 inches of pitch and 18 inches wide, with a 10.6-inch touchscreen and power at every seat — so this is not extra space. What it is, is a window pair instead of a window trio, a cabin of 56 instead of several hundred, a much quieter position relative to the engines, and dedicated toilets shared with far fewer people.

It is bookable through normal seat selection, free on Economy Convenience and Comfort fares. It only exists on the A380, which in 2026 has flown a heavily reduced schedule concentrated on London, Bangkok, Paris, Singapore and Sydney, so check the aircraft before planning around it.

Will Qatar Airways ever launch premium economy?

Nothing has been announced, and the honest answer is that the question is now open in a way it was not five years ago. Three things have changed since Al Baker's flat refusal.

The leadership changed twice, and the current group chief executive has taken no public position on the cabin. The competitive picture changed: Emirates has rolled premium economy across long-haul routes and reports strong yields on it, which removes the argument that Gulf passengers will not buy the product. And Qatar is due a new flagship — the Boeing 777-9, on which its new First Class suites are expected — which is the natural moment to reopen a cabin layout, since retrofitting an existing fleet is far more expensive than specifying a new one.

Against that, Qatar has invested heavily in the opposite direction: Qsuite Next Gen for business, a four-seat First Class cabin for the 777-9, and a Recaro-built new economy seat. None of that budget points at a fourth cabin. Trade commentary treats a late-2026 or 2027 launch as possible rather than planned. Book what is flying today.

What to book instead of Qatar premium economy

If premium economy is what you actually want on a Doha itinerary, there are three real options, and they are not equivalent.

The first is Comfort+ on a leased 777, which gets you the seat and none of the service — best value when the sector is long and you can confirm the airframe. The second is a Business Lite fare, Qatar's unbundled business ticket: it is filed in booking class P, excludes lounge access and earns only 75% of miles flown, but it puts you in the same Qsuite as the passenger paying triple. On long sectors the gap between a paid-up economy seat and Business Lite is often narrower than people expect. The third is routing on a oneworld partner with a genuine premium economy cabin — British Airways World Traveller Plus, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Japan Airlines or Finnair — either instead of Qatar or on the connecting sector, since Qatar has been a oneworld member since October 2013. Getting those three priced side by side with the fare rules attached is exactly the comparison Airlaza puts in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Qatar Airways have premium economy?

No. Qatar Airways sells Economy, Business and, on the A380 and six ex-Cathay Pacific 777-300ERs, First. There is no premium economy cabin with its own service, crew or fare code. Comfort+ is a paid extra-legroom seat on nine leased Boeing 777s, sold on top of an ordinary economy ticket.

What is Qatar Airways Comfort+?

Comfort+ is Qatar's name for premium economy seats that came fitted to Boeing 777s leased from Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia from December 2021. You buy them as a paid seat upgrade on an economy fare. The seat is better; the meal, the crew and the check-in queue stay standard economy.

How much legroom does Qatar Airways Comfort+ have?

Reviews put the ex-Cathay Pacific seats at 38 inches of pitch and the ex-Virgin Australia seats at 41 inches, against 31 to 32 inches in Qatar economy. Both are laid out 2-4-2 rather than 3-4-3, and the ex-Virgin seats measure 19.5 inches wide with eight inches of recline.

How much does Qatar Airways Comfort+ cost?

Qatar prices it per sector and quotes it at booking rather than publishing a tariff. Simple Flying reported around €150, roughly US$170, on Doha–Europe routes, and Executive Traveller reported about AUD 245 on Phuket–Doha. It buys the seat only, not lounge access and not a meal upgrade.

Which Qatar Airways aircraft have Comfort+ seats?

Only nine leased Boeing 777-300ERs: six formerly with Cathay Pacific and three formerly with Virgin Australia. Qatar's own A350s, 787s, A380, A330s and the rest of its 777 fleet have no Comfort+ at all. Because these are leases, the product is expected to leave with the aircraft.

Is Economy Comfort the same as Comfort+ on Qatar Airways?

No, and confusing them is expensive. Economy Comfort is Qatar's top economy fare family — 35 kg of checked baggage on weight-concept routes, free preferred and extra-legroom seat selection, higher Avios accrual. Comfort+ is a physical seat on nine leased 777s. You can hold one without ever seeing the other.

What is the best economy seat on a Qatar Airways A380?

The upper deck. Qatar puts 56 economy seats in rows 25 to 32 above the wing, laid out 2-4-2 instead of the lower deck's 3-4-3. The seat is the same Recaro CL3710 at roughly 31 inches, but the cabin is far smaller, much quieter and gives window pairs instead of trios.

Will Qatar Airways launch premium economy in 2026?

Nothing has been announced. Akbar Al Baker ruled it out in December 2020, and neither of the two chief executives since has publicly reversed that. Trade commentary treats a launch alongside the Boeing 777-9 as possible rather than planned, and Qatar's current cabin spending is going into business and first.

Is Qatar Airways Business Lite better value than premium economy?

Often, on long sectors. Business Lite puts you in the same Qsuite as a full-fare business passenger, but excludes lounge access, gives no advance seat assignment and earns 75% of miles flown. It is filed in booking class P. Against a paid-up economy seat plus Comfort+, the gap narrows quickly.

Can I book premium economy on a Qatar Airways connection?

Yes, on the partner sector. Qatar has been a oneworld member since October 2013, so an itinerary through Doha can connect onto British Airways World Traveller Plus, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Japan Airlines or Finnair premium economy. The Qatar-operated sector itself will still be economy, Comfort+ or business.
