Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Avios
Avios, Qpoints and the reward fee Qatar started charging by distance.

Qatar Airways does charge a fee on Avios redemptions. Since 15 September 2024 the reward fee is calculated on total distance flown rather than per sector, and long business-class awards have priced at US$200 to US$250 in cash. What Qatar does not add is a carrier-imposed fuel surcharge — a different thing entirely. Airlaza quotes Qatar fares in writing: +1-888-890-4009.

Three currencies, not one: Avios, Qpoints and Qcredits
Most airline programmes run one currency. Privilege Club runs three, and confusing them is the single most common reason a Qatar member miscalculates what a trip is worth. Qatar retired Qmiles in favour of Avios in 2022, joining the shared currency used by British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Finnair, and at the same time separated tier qualification into its own unit.
| Currency | What it buys | How it lapses |
|---|---|---|
| Avios | Reward flights, upgrades, hotels and retail | 36 months of account inactivity |
| Qpoints | Tier status only — never redeemable | 365 days from the date earned |
| Qcredits | Upgrades, excess baggage, lounge entry, award fees | 24 months from allocation |
The practical consequence is that a heavy spender can hold a large Avios balance and no status at all, because Avios accumulate from credit cards and shopping while Qpoints come almost entirely from flying. Qatar reinforces that by requiring at least 20% of your Qpoints to be earned on flights marketed or operated by Qatar Airways itself, as documented by Point Hacks — or, as an alternative, four Qatar sectors on a 12-month renewal and eight on a 24-month renewal. Partner flying alone will not hold a tier.
The Avios fee Qatar actually charges
Qatar spent years being recommended on the basis that it adds no fuel surcharge to award tickets. That remains true, and it is genuinely valuable next to programmes that pass on several hundred pounds of carrier-imposed charges. It is also not the same as free. Qatar levies its own reward fee, and on 15 September 2024 it changed how that fee is calculated.
| Award routing | Old sector rate | Fee after Sept 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi to Doha, business | US$70 | US$70, unchanged |
| Delhi to Doha, economy | US$35 | US$35, unchanged |
| Delhi to Kenya, business | US$140 | US$160 |
| Doha to Los Angeles, business | US$70 | US$200 |
| Chicago to Doha, business | US$70 | US$200 |
| Male to Doha to Miami, business | US$140 | US$250 |
| Jakarta to Doha to New York, business | US$140 | US$250 |
| Frankfurt to Doha to Bangkok, economy | US$70 | US$90 |
| Perth to Doha, first | US$100 | US$200 |
*Post-2024 figures as reported by One Mile at a Time and Live From A Lounge. The old-rate column is calculated from Qatar's published per-sector rates of US$35 economy, US$70 business and US$100 first, multiplied by sectors flown.*
Read the pattern rather than the individual rows. Short and medium-haul awards were left alone or reduced by up to 15%, which is what Qatar's own announcement emphasised. Ultra-long-haul awards in the front cabin absorbed the increase, in one case tripling. If your redemption plan is Doha to Los Angeles or Male to Miami, budget the cash component before you count the Avios.
How many Avios a Qatar Airways flight costs
Qatar prices its own flights on a peak and off-peak structure rather than one fixed chart, so the same Qsuite on the same route moves with the date.
| Route, one way | Cabin | Off-peak Avios |
|---|---|---|
| Doha to London | Qsuite business | 42,500 |
| Doha to Bangkok | Qsuite business | 42,500 |
| Doha to Singapore | Business | 50,000 |
| United States to Doha | Economy | 35,000 |
| United States to Doha | Qsuite business | 70,000 |
| Doha to Australia or New Zealand | Business | 90,000 |
*Levels as recorded by AwardFares and Award Travel Finder in 2026; Qatar does not publish a single fixed award chart.*
On the one route where both numbers are documented, the United States to Doha in Qsuite, peak pricing sits at 94,500 Avios against 70,000 off-peak — 35% more for an identical seat. Partner redemptions run on a separate distance-banded chart, quoted by AwardFares at roughly 6,000 to 42,500 Avios in economy and 12,500 to 85,000 in business depending on sector length, with a distinct short-haul chart for American Airlines and Alaska Airlines starting around 9,500 Avios in economy under 650 miles.
Flexi Rewards: paying double to see more seats
Qatar sells two grades of reward seat, and the distinction matters more than the headline rate. Saver awards are the numbers in the table above and are released in limited quantity. Flexi Rewards open availability on flights where no Saver seat exists — priced, as AwardFares records, at roughly double the off-peak Saver rate, so around 140,000 Avios for a United States to Doha Qsuite that costs 70,000 at Saver level.
That is a poor rate per Avios in isolation. It is occasionally the right decision anyway, because the alternative on a sold-out date is a cash business fare that Simple Flying has reported past US$5,500 for a single Sydney leg. The test is arithmetic, not loyalty: divide the cash fare, minus taxes, by the Avios required. Anything above roughly two US cents per Avios is defensible on a Flexi seat; below that, hold the balance.
Two further points. The reward fee is charged on Flexi and Saver alike, calculated the same way on distance. And peak-date Flexi pricing compounds both premiums at once, which is how a Doha long-haul reward reaches six figures in Avios and still carries a US$250 cash fee.
Earning Avios: the fare family sets the rate
On paid Qatar flights the accrual rate is written into the fare family, not the cabin. Four passengers in four identical Qsuites can be earning at four different rates on the same sector.
| Business fare | Avios accrual | Lounge at Doha |
|---|---|---|
| Business Lite | 75% of miles flown | Not included, sold separately |
| Business Classic | 125% of miles flown | Included |
| Business Comfort | 175% of miles flown | Included |
| Business Elite | 200% of miles flown | Included |
Business Lite is filed in booking class P, a letter outside the conventional business set of J, C and D, and it earns less than half what the Elite passenger across the aisle earns for the identical flown distance. On a 3,200-mile sector that gap is roughly 4,000 Avios, repeated every time you fly.
Tier bonus sits on top of the fare rate. Point Hacks documents a 25% bonus on Qatar flights for Silver members, 75% for Gold and 100% for Platinum. A Platinum member on Business Elite is therefore earning at a fundamentally different rate from a Burgundy member on Business Lite, which is why status and fare family should be decided together rather than separately.
Qpoints and the four Privilege Club tiers
Privilege Club runs Burgundy, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Qpoints, and only Qpoints, move you between them.
| Tier | Qpoints to earn | To retain, 12 mths | To retain, 24 mths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 150 | 135 | 270 |
| Gold | 300 | 270 | 540 |
| Platinum | 600 | 540 | 1,080 |
The retention discount is the underrated feature. Holding Gold needs 270 Qpoints against the 300 it took to reach, so an existing member who flies slightly less than last year keeps the tier. The 24-month route is the safety net for irregular travellers: 540 Qpoints across two years holds Gold even if neither individual year would have.
| Tier | oneworld level | Avios bonus | Extra baggage | Qcredits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Burgundy | None | None | None | None |
| Silver | Ruby | 25% | 15 kg or 1 piece | None |
| Gold | Sapphire | 75% | 20 kg or 1 piece | 40 |
| Platinum | Emerald | 100% | 25 kg or 2 pieces | 60 |
*Tier thresholds and benefits as documented by Point Hacks and Simple Flying.*
Platinum carries two benefits that do not appear on the tier chart. It exempts your Avios from expiry entirely while you hold the status, and it admits you to Al Safwa, Qatar's first class lounge at Hamad International, when you are travelling in business.
Qcredits: the currency almost nobody spends
Qcredits arrive automatically when you reach or renew Gold or Platinum — 40 and 60 respectively — and expire 24 months later. They buy cabin upgrades, excess baggage of up to 10 kg or one additional piece depending on route, lounge entry, and, usefully, the reward fee on an award ticket. That last use is the one to remember, because it is the only mechanism Qatar offers for reducing the distance-based fee described earlier.
Qatar quotes the Qcredit cost of a specific upgrade or bag inside its own calculator rather than publishing a chart, so there is no universal exchange rate to plan against. Trade coverage from Reward Flight Finder has reported Qatar hinting at replacing Qcredits with a successor scheme called Keys, which is unconfirmed and should not change what you do with a balance you already hold.
The behavioural failure is straightforward: Qcredits are granted silently, are not visible on a boarding pass, and quietly lapse. If you renewed Gold eighteen months ago, check the balance before the twenty-fourth month rather than after.
Expiry, reinstatement and the 36-month clock
Avios expire after 36 months of account inactivity, and inactivity is the operative word — the balance itself has no expiry date. Any qualifying earn, spend or transfer resets the full 36 months on the entire balance, so a single small transaction protects everything you hold. Platinum members are exempt for as long as they retain the tier.
| Event | Effect on your balance |
|---|---|
| Any earn, spend or transfer | Resets the clock to a further 36 months |
| 36 months with no activity | Entire Avios balance expires |
| Holding Platinum status | No expiry while the tier is held |
| Within 12 months of expiry | Reinstatement possible, for a cash fee |
| More than 12 months after | Permanently lost, no reinstatement |
*Reinstatement is reported by AwardWallet at around 1.5 US cents per Avios, which is close to the redemption value of an economy award and therefore rarely worth paying.*
Qpoints behave completely differently and catch people out for the opposite reason. Each Qpoint expires 365 days after the date it was earned, individually, on a rolling basis — there is no annual reset date and no activity clause. A member sitting on 280 Qpoints in November can be back under 150 by February purely through age, with no flights taken either way.
Moving Avios between programmes and accounts
Avios are transferable at 1:1 between British Airways, Qatar Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Finnair, free of charge and usually within the hour, through the shared avios.com system. That single fact is why the Qatar award chart is reachable by people who have never flown Qatar: American Express, Citi ThankYou, Capital One and Bilt transfer directly into an Avios programme in the United States, and Chase Ultimate Rewards reaches Qatar via British Airways.
Qatar is the one exception to the network being fully direct. Frequent Miler and Head for Points both report that moving Avios out of Qatar to Iberia or Aer Lingus still requires two hops, via a British Airways Club account, where the other programmes now transfer to each other in one. Build in the extra step and the extra account before you find a seat, not after.
Household pooling is handled through Privilege Club's family arrangement, where nominated members accrue into a principal account at a percentage set by the principal member's tier. If a specific redemption is the point of the exercise and the Avios are scattered across programmes, Airlaza will price the cash alternative in writing so you can compare the two properly.
Frequently asked questions
Does Qatar Airways charge fees on Avios redemptions?
Yes. Qatar adds no carrier-imposed fuel surcharge, but it does charge a reward fee, and since 15 September 2024 that fee is calculated on total distance rather than per sector. One Mile at a Time recorded US$200 to US$250 on long business awards. Budget the cash before counting Avios.
How many Avios do I need for Qatar Airways business class?
Off-peak Saver pricing has been recorded at 42,500 Avios one way from Doha to London or Bangkok, 50,000 to Singapore, 70,000 between the United States and Doha, and 90,000 to Australia or New Zealand. Peak dates on the United States route rise to 94,500 Avios.
Do Qatar Airways Avios expire?
They expire after 36 months of account inactivity, not on a fixed date. Any earn, spend or transfer resets the full 36 months across your whole balance. Platinum members are exempt while they hold the tier. Expired Avios can be reinstated for a cash fee within twelve months only.
Do Qpoints expire the same way as Avios?
No, and the difference matters. Each Qpoint expires 365 days after the day it was earned, individually and on a rolling basis, with no activity clause and no annual reset. You can lose a tier through Qpoints simply ageing out, without taking or cancelling a single flight.
How many Qpoints do I need for Qatar Airways Gold?
Gold requires 300 Qpoints within twelve months. Retention is easier at 270 Qpoints in twelve months or 540 across twenty-four. At least 20% of your Qpoints must come from flights marketed or operated by Qatar Airways, or alternatively four Qatar sectors on a twelve-month renewal.
What is the difference between Avios, Qpoints and Qcredits?
Avios are the spendable currency for reward flights, upgrades and retail. Qpoints buy nothing and exist only to qualify you for Silver, Gold or Platinum. Qcredits arrive with Gold or Platinum status and pay for upgrades, excess baggage, lounge entry or an award ticket's reward fee.
How many Avios does a Qatar business class ticket earn?
The fare family decides it, not the cabin. Business Lite earns 75% of miles flown, Classic 125%, Comfort 175% and Elite 200% — four rates for four identical Qsuites. Tier bonus is added on top, at 25% for Silver, 75% for Gold and 100% for Platinum.
Can I transfer Qatar Avios to British Airways?
Yes, free and at 1:1, usually within an hour through the shared avios.com system covering British Airways, Qatar, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Finnair. Qatar is the exception to one-hop transfers: moving Avios from Qatar to Iberia or Aer Lingus still routes through a British Airways account first.
What is a Flexi Reward on Qatar Airways?
Flexi Rewards open seats on flights with no Saver award availability, priced at roughly double the off-peak Saver rate — around 140,000 Avios where Saver costs 70,000. The distance-based reward fee applies identically to both. Compare it against the cash fare per Avios before committing the balance.
Can I use Avios or Qcredits for extra Qatar Airways baggage?
Qcredits cover excess baggage of up to 10 kg or one additional piece, depending on route, and Gold members receive 40 Qcredits with 60 for Platinum. Status itself also adds allowance: 15 kg or one piece at Silver, 20 kg at Gold, and 25 kg or two pieces at Platinum.
