British Airways lets long-haul First, Club World and World Traveller Plus passengers, plus World Traveller economy on long-haul, request a special meal such as vegetarian, halal, kosher, diabetic or gluten-free through Manage My Booking, generally with 24 hours' notice and 48 hours for kosher outside Heathrow. Short-haul Euro Traveller does not offer special meal ordering. Call Airlaza on +1-888-890-4009 for help with a ticket we've issued.

How British Airways special meal ordering works

Special meals are requested against an existing booking rather than chosen at the airport or on board, which means the request has to be logged before the cut-off or it will not reach catering in time. The process runs through Manage My Booking: a passenger opens their booking, goes to the meal or passenger-preferences section, selects a special meal code from the list offered for that flight, and saves the request. The same request can usually be made when first booking the flight rather than afterwards, which is the more reliable route if the dietary need is already known.

Not every cabin or route carries every meal code, and availability is set by British Airways' catering programme for that specific flight length and cabin rather than being a single universal menu. A request that is technically valid in general terms can still be unavailable on a specific short regional long-haul route, so checking what the booking actually offers, rather than assuming a code will appear, avoids disappointment at the gate.

Which cabins can order a special meal

CabinSpecial meal ordering
FirstYes
Club World / Club SuiteYes
World Traveller PlusYes
World Traveller (long-haul economy)Yes
Euro Traveller (short-haul economy)No — buy from High Life Café instead
Club Europe (short-haul business)Generally follows short-haul catering, not the special-meal code list

The Euro Traveller exclusion catches people out most often, because it is not obvious from the booking flow until the meal option simply fails to appear. On short-haul British Airways flights, food is bought on board from the High Life Café menu rather than pre-ordered, so a dietary requirement on a short European sector needs to be managed by choosing suitable items on board or bringing food, rather than by pre-booking a special meal code.

The main special meal codes

CodeMealTypical use
VGMLVeganNo animal products at all
VLMLVegetarian lacto-ovoVegetarian including eggs and dairy
MOMLMuslim/halalPrepared to Islamic dietary requirements
HNMLHinduPrepared to Hindu dietary requirements
KSMLKosherPrepared under kosher supervision
GFMLGluten-freeFor coeliac disease or gluten intolerance
DBMLDiabeticLower sugar, balanced protein/fat/carbohydrate
CHMLChild mealAimed at younger passengers, roughly ages 2-12

These codes are the standard IATA-style special meal codes used across most airlines, not something British Airways invented, which is why the same letters appear on other carriers' meal lists too. British Airways confirms it does not offer a separate baby meal code; instead, long-haul cabins provide bottle and food-warming facilities, and parents are expected to bring appropriate food for infants.

Notice periods, and why kosher is different

Meal typeMinimum notice
Kosher, all airports except Heathrow48 hours
Kosher, departing Heathrow24 hours
All other special meal codes24 hours
Euro Traveller short-haulNot applicable, no pre-order

Kosher meals carry a longer notice window everywhere except Heathrow because of the additional supervised preparation and sourcing involved, which Heathrow's catering supply chain can typically absorb faster than other departure points. Every other special meal code follows the same standard 24-hour cut-off, so leaving a request until the day before departure is close to the limit rather than comfortably early.

Ordering a special meal step by step

Requesting a special meal is done in the same place as most other add-ons: sign into Manage My Booking with the booking reference and surname, or through an Executive Club login, open the relevant flight, and look for passenger preferences or meal options. From there, select the appropriate code from the dropdown offered for that specific flight and cabin, and confirm the request. The same option is generally available while booking the flight in the first place, which avoids a second step later and reduces the risk of missing the notice window closer to departure.

Passengers travelling on a multi-passenger booking need to set the meal preference for each traveller individually where dietary needs differ, since the system attaches the request to a specific passenger rather than the booking as a whole. It is worth checking the confirmation screen shows the correct code against the correct name before closing the booking.

When a special meal request can fail or go missing

A request can fail to appear on the day for a few identifiable reasons: it was made after the notice cut-off, it was entered against the wrong passenger on a shared booking, the specific route or aircraft does not carry that meal code that day, or a late aircraft swap changed the catering loaded for the flight. Reconfirming a special meal request 24-48 hours before departure, alongside checking in, is a reasonable safeguard given how many of these failure points sit outside the passenger's control once the request has been submitted.

For connecting itineraries involving a codeshare or another oneworld carrier, the meal request needs to be visible to whichever airline is actually operating that specific leg, since a request logged only against the British Airways-marketed flight number does not automatically transfer to a different operating carrier's catering system.

Requesting special meals through Airlaza

Where the agency has issued the British Airways ticket, we can log the special meal code against each passenger at the time of booking and confirm it is set correctly ahead of the notice cut-off, particularly for kosher requests, which need the earliest lead time. For a multi-passenger or multi-leg itinerary, we check the request shows against the right name on every operating carrier involved rather than assuming one entry covers the whole trip. Call +1-888-890-4009 with your booking reference if a special meal needs adding or checking.

Frequently asked questions

How do I order a special meal on British Airways?

Sign into Manage My Booking with your booking reference and surname, or your Executive Club account, open the flight, and select a special meal code from the passenger-preferences or meal section. The same option is usually available while booking the flight directly, which is the more reliable route if you already know your dietary need.

How much notice does British Airways need for a special meal?

Generally 24 hours before departure for most special meal codes. Kosher meals need 48 hours' notice from every airport except Heathrow, where 24 hours is enough. Leaving a request until the day before departure is close to the cut-off rather than comfortably ahead of it.

Can I order a special meal on a short-haul British Airways flight?

No. Euro Traveller, British Airways' short-haul economy cabin, does not offer pre-ordered special meal codes; food is bought on board from the High Life Café menu instead. Special meal ordering applies to First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller on long-haul flights.

What special meal codes does British Airways offer?

Common codes include VGML for vegan, VLML for vegetarian with eggs and dairy, MOML for halal, HNML for Hindu, KSML for kosher, GFML for gluten-free, DBML for diabetic and CHML for a children's meal. Availability of each code can vary by specific route and aircraft.

Does British Airways offer a baby meal?

No. British Airways does not publish a dedicated baby meal code; instead, long-haul cabins provide facilities to warm bottles and baby food that parents bring themselves. Parents travelling with an infant on a long-haul British Airways flight should plan to carry their own suitable food.

What happens if my special meal doesn't show up on board?

It usually means the request was made after the cut-off, entered against the wrong passenger, unavailable on that specific route or aircraft, or lost to a late aircraft swap that changed the catering loaded. Reconfirming the request 24-48 hours before departure, alongside check-in, reduces this risk.

Can each passenger on a booking have a different special meal?

Yes. Special meal requests are set per passenger, not per booking, so a family or group travelling together with different dietary needs should confirm each traveller's meal code is entered separately and correctly, rather than assuming one request applies to everyone on the reservation.

Does a special meal request carry over to a connecting flight on another airline?

Not automatically. If part of your itinerary is operated by a different oneworld or codeshare carrier, the special meal request needs to be visible to that specific operating airline's catering system, since a request against the British Airways-marketed flight number does not always transfer across automatically.

Is there a fee for ordering a British Airways special meal?

No published fee applies to standard special meal codes such as vegetarian, halal, kosher, gluten-free, diabetic or child meals; they are provided as part of the fare in eligible cabins. Euro Traveller short-haul passengers instead pay for food bought on board through the High Life Café.

Can the agency arrange a special meal on my British Airways booking?

Yes, for tickets the agency has issued. We log the meal code against the correct passenger at the time of booking and confirm it ahead of the notice window, which matters most for kosher requests needing the longest lead time. Call +1-888-890-4009 with your booking reference to check or add one.
