British Airways seat selection

When seats are free, when they cost, and how status changes the rules.

Note

Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not British Airways. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.

British Airways charges to choose a seat in advance on most tickets, in every cabin except First. Seat selection becomes free for everyone when online check-in opens 24 hours before departure, and status in The British Airways Club moves that forward — Bronze from seven days out, Silver and Gold from the moment you book. Does British Airways charge for seat selection? The honest answer

Yes, and more widely than most airlines. British Airways applies an advance seat selection charge in Euro Traveller, Club Europe, World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World. Paying to choose a seat in a long-haul business class cabin is unusual — most carriers stop charging once you buy a lie-flat seat — but British Airways does it. First is the only cabin exempt: First customers can choose a seat at the time of booking at no cost.

What that charge actually buys is certainty, not access. Every passenger on every fare gets a seat, free, at one of two moments: when check-in opens 24 hours before departure, or when you pay to bring that moment forward. Nothing about paying gives you a seat you could not otherwise have had; it gives you the pick of the map while it is still full.

So the real question is not whether British Airways charges. It is whether the 24-hour rule is good enough for your particular trip. For a solo traveller on a lightly booked daytime flight, it usually is. For a family of four on a peak-season long-haul departure, or for anyone who genuinely needs an aisle, it usually is not.

When each British Airways Club tier gets free seat selection

This is the part that saves the most money, because status benefits extend to everyone travelling on the same booking, not just the member. One Silver member can seat a family of five for free.

Tier in The British Airways ClubWhen advance seat selection becomes free
BlueNot free in advance — only when check-in opens 24 hours before departure
Bronze / oneworld RubyFree from seven days before departure, for everyone on the booking
Silver / oneworld SapphireFree from the time of booking, for everyone on the booking — long-haul exit rows and Row 1 excluded
Gold / oneworld EmeraldFree from the time of booking, for everyone on the booking, with no seat restrictions
First cabin, any tierFree from the time of booking

Two consequences follow. First, if anyone in your party holds British Airways or oneworld status, put the whole group on one booking reference rather than separate ones — the benefit does not reach a companion sitting on a different PNR. Second, the Silver exclusions are real: a Silver member wanting a long-haul exit row or Row 1 still pays, while a Gold member does not.

What British Airways used to charge — and why there is no price list now

British Airways has removed its seat selection price list from its website, so nobody can quote you a current tariff, and any site that presents one as fact is republishing old data. The figures below are the last published "from" prices, per one-way flight, and are included as a sense of scale rather than as a quote.

CabinLast published "from" price, one way
Euro Traveller — short-haul economy£7
Club Europe — short-haul business£14
World Traveller — long-haul economy£20 standard
World Traveller — twin seats£30 (also quoted as €36 / $45)
World Traveller — exit row£50
World Traveller Plus — premium economy£18 standard, £50 exit row
Club World — long-haul business£62
FirstNo charge

"From" was always doing heavy lifting in that list. Specialist reporting notes long-haul economy seat charges reaching £70 or more on a route such as London to Los Angeles, several times the £20 headline. Price is generated per booking from route, cabin, seat position, demand and how far out you are, so two people on the same aircraft can pay different amounts for adjacent seats. Ask for the actual figure on your itinerary before you decide it is worth it.

Exit rows and extra-legroom seats: who is allowed, and when you can book

Exit row seats are the best value on a British Airways long-haul aircraft if you are tall, and they carry conditions no other seat does, because they are a safety position rather than a comfort upgrade.

Exit row conditionBritish Airways requirement
AgeAged 12 or over — some published wording says "over 12", so confirm if your child is exactly 12
PregnancyNot permitted
AccessibilityNot available to passengers with accessibility needs, or who are substantially blind or deaf
Physical capabilityMust be fit enough to operate an emergency exit door
LanguageMust understand printed and verbal instructions given in English
WillingnessMust be willing and able to assist in an evacuation
Free at booking, short-haulSilver / oneworld Sapphire and above
Free at booking, long-haulGold / oneworld Emerald only
Everyone else, long-haulChargeable, and bookable only in a window reported as 14 to 4 days before departure

That last row surprises people. On long-haul, a non-Gold passenger cannot simply buy an exit row the day they book — the seats are held back and released into a short window shortly before departure. If you want one, set a reminder for two weeks out. Crew will also reassign an exit row at the gate if they judge someone unsuitable, and the seat fee position in that case is discretionary.

How to choose your seats on British Airways, step by step

Seat selection lives in Manage My Booking on britishairways.com or in the British Airways app, and works the same way whether you are paying or selecting free.

Sign in with your booking reference and surname, or with your British Airways Club membership, open the booking and choose seats. The map shows the aircraft as currently configured, with any charge attached to each seat shown before you commit. Select for each passenger and each flight separately — an outbound selection does not carry to the return, and a connecting itinerary has a separate map per sector.

Basic fares, hand-baggage-only tickets and random seats

British Airways sells an unbundled long-haul fare that includes hand baggage only, and it changes how seating works rather than just what you carry.

On a Basic fare, British Airways allocates your seat at random when you check in, 24 hours before departure. You are not offered the free pick of the map that other fares get at that moment — a seat is assigned to you. If you do not like it, you can pay to change it, subject to what is left.

Twin seats — the paired seats at the sides of certain long-haul cabins, which are the best way for two people to travel without a stranger between them — are not available to Basic fare customers at all, at any price. They were last published at £30 per seat and are found on aircraft including the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 .

The practical lesson is that a Basic fare is cheaper than it looks only if you genuinely do not care where you sit. Add a seat charge to escape a random middle seat and the saving against a standard fare, which also includes a checked bag, can disappear entirely. Price both properly before choosing.

Families, children and bassinet seats

British Airways treats family seating as a policy commitment rather than a paid product, and this is the strongest consumer protection on the page. British Airways states that all children under 12 will be seated with an accompanying adult from the same booking, free of charge. You do not have to buy seats to avoid your child being placed elsewhere on the aircraft.

The caveat is what "with an adult" means. British Airways guarantees each child under 12 sits next to at least one adult from the booking — it does not guarantee the whole party sits together. A family of five may find itself in two clusters. If sitting as a single block matters, that is what a paid selection buys.

Behind the airline's policy sits UK Civil Aviation Authority guidance, which says airlines should aim to seat parents close to children, that where that is not possible they should not be separated by more than one aisle or more than one seat row, and that parents should not have to pay to avoid a child being seated elsewhere on the aircraft.

Bassinet positions — the bulkhead seats with a fitted cot — can be reserved for infants under two on long-haul flights. Weight limits apply to the bassinet itself, commonly reported at around 9kg . Request one as early as possible; there are only a handful per cabin.

When British Airways refunds a seat fee, and when it does not

Paid seating on British Airways comes with an explicit condition attached: it is not guaranteed. British Airways states that seating may need to be changed for operational, safety or security reasons — including after you have boarded the aircraft. An aircraft swap is the most common trigger, and a swap can move you from a chosen aisle to an assigned middle without warning.

SituationBritish Airways position
British Airways changes your seat and you are unsatisfiedApply for a refund of the paid seating
No suitable alternative seat can be offeredApply for a refund of the paid seating
Time limit to claimWithin 30 days of the completion of the last flight in the itinerary
You cancel the booking yourselfSeat fees reported as not refunded
You upgrade to a higher cabinSelection fee paid in the lower cabin is refunded
Downgrade to a lower cabinFare difference between cabins is owed to you

Two habits are worth adopting. Screenshot the seat map and the amount charged at the moment you pay, because a refund claim is much easier with evidence of what you bought. And check the booking again a week before departure — aircraft swaps are usually loaded well ahead of the day, and spotting one early gives you a chance to re-select rather than argue afterwards.

Getting a good British Airways seat without paying for it

Several things work reliably, and none of them cost anything.

Check in the moment the window opens. Seat selection becomes free for everyone at 24 hours, and the map at 24 hours and 1 minute is materially better than the map at 20 hours. Set an alarm for a peak-season long-haul flight.

Check the aircraft type first, not the seat number. British Airways runs two different World Traveller Plus layouts and two generations of Club World seat across its long-haul fleet, so the same seat letter means different things on different aircraft. A 2-3-2 premium economy cabin has one middle seat per row; a 2-4-2 cabin has two.

Keep the booking together. Status benefits, family seating and the free 24-hour selection all work on a single booking reference. Splitting a party across separate references is the most common self-inflicted seating problem.

And re-check after any schedule change. A rebooking onto a new flight number does not always carry your seat with it, and the earlier you find that out, the more of the map is still open.

Frequently asked questions

Does British Airways charge for seat selection?

Yes, in every cabin except First. Advance seat selection is chargeable in Euro Traveller, Club Europe, World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World. Selection becomes free for every passenger when online check-in opens 24 hours before departure, and earlier than that if you hold status in The British Airways Club.

When can I choose my seat for free on British Airways?

For everyone, 24 hours before departure when online check-in opens. Bronze members of The British Airways Club select free from seven days out, and Silver and Gold members select free from the moment of booking. Status covers everyone travelling on the same booking reference, not just the member.

How much does British Airways charge to select a seat?

There is no answer that applies to every flight. British Airways has removed its seat selection price list from its website, and the fee is generated per booking from route, cabin, seat position and demand. Withdrawn "from" prices started around £7 short-haul and £20 long-haul economy, with real charges much higher.

How do I book seats on a British Airways flight?

Open Manage My Booking on britishairways.com or in the British Airways app, sign in with your booking reference and surname, and choose seats. Select for every passenger and every flight separately — an outbound choice does not carry to the return, and each connecting sector has its own seat map.

Can I sit in a British Airways exit row?

Only if you meet the safety conditions: aged 12 or over, not pregnant, physically able to operate an exit door, able to understand printed and verbal instructions in English, and willing to assist in an evacuation. Passengers with accessibility needs, or who are substantially blind or deaf, cannot occupy them.

Are exit row seats free with British Airways status?

Only partly. On short-haul, Silver and oneworld Sapphire members and above get exit rows free at booking. On long-haul, only Gold and oneworld Emerald get them free — Silver is specifically excluded from long-haul exit rows and Row 1. Everyone else pays within a short pre-departure window.

Will British Airways seat my child next to me?

Yes. British Airways states that all children under 12 are seated with an accompanying adult from the same booking, free of charge. It guarantees each child sits next to at least one adult, not that the whole party sits together, so a larger family may still be split into groups.

What seat do I get on a British Airways Basic fare?

A random one. On hand-baggage-only Basic fares, British Airways allocates your seat automatically when you check in 24 hours before departure rather than letting you pick. You can pay to change it from whatever is left. Twin seats are not available on Basic fares at any price.

Can I get a refund on a British Airways seat fee?

Sometimes. If British Airways changes your seat and you are unsatisfied, or cannot offer a suitable alternative, you can apply for a refund of the paid seating within 30 days of the last flight in your itinerary. Paid seating is explicitly not guaranteed against operational or safety changes.

Is it worth paying to choose a seat on British Airways?

It depends on the trip. On a busy peak-season long-haul flight, or when travelling as a group who must sit together, paying buys certainty the 24-hour window cannot. On a lightly booked daytime sector as a solo traveller, checking in the minute the window opens usually achieves the same result free.
