Emirates pet policy
Cabin, cargo and assistance-animal rules are governed by very different limits.
Note
Airlaza is an independent IATA and ARC accredited agency, not Emirates. Fares, fees and conditions are set by the airline and change without notice — the figures shown in your own booking are the ones that apply. Confirm at the airline's own site before you travel.
Emirates does not allow pets in the aircraft cabin, with two narrow exceptions: guide dogs assisting visually impaired passengers, and falcons on specific routes between Dubai and parts of Pakistan. Every other pet — cats, dogs, birds and other CITES-listed animals — must travel as cargo, or in limited cases as checked baggage on short itineraries starting in Dubai. The cabin rule, and its only two exceptions
Most passengers assume a small enough cat or dog can ride in the cabin the way it might on some European or North American carriers. Emirates does not offer this. Its published policy is unambiguous: animals are not permitted in the passenger cabin, full stop, aside from guide dogs accompanying visually impaired travellers and falcons travelling on the specific Dubai–Pakistan routes where falconry transport has long-standing local demand. There is no pet-in-a-carrier-under-the-seat option, no size-based exception, and no fee that unlocks cabin access for an ordinary pet. If cabin travel with your pet is a requirement, Emirates is simply not the airline that offers it, regardless of the animal's size or breed.
Cargo: the default route for almost every pet
| Animal type | Typical routing | Booked through |
|---|---|---|
| Dogs and cats | Cargo hold, as manifested freight | Emirates SkyCargo or an approved pet-shipping agent |
| Birds (non-falcon) | Cargo, subject to the seasonal ban below | Emirates SkyCargo |
| Other CITES-listed species | Cargo, with import/export permits | Emirates SkyCargo |
| Falcons, Dubai–Pakistan only | Can travel as checked baggage or cabin depending on route specifics | Airport check-in with documentation |
Because pets travelling as cargo are handled as freight rather than as part of a passenger's baggage allowance, the booking, paperwork and pricing run through Emirates SkyCargo or a licensed pet relocation agent, not through the standard passenger reservation. This is a materially different process from checking a bag, and it needs to be arranged well ahead of the flight, not at the airport counter.
The 17-hour checked-baggage exception starting in Dubai
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Itinerary must start in Dubai | Not applicable to flights originating elsewhere |
| Destination country | Must permit animals to enter as excess baggage rather than cargo-only |
| Total journey time, including transit | Must be under 17 hours |
| Eligible species | Falcons, cats, dogs and pet birds |
| Documentation | Import permits and health certificates as required by the destination |
This is a genuinely narrow exception, not a general workaround. It only applies when the journey begins in Dubai, the destination country's own import rules allow animals to arrive as excess baggage rather than requiring formal cargo clearance, and the full trip — including any connection — stays under 17 hours door to door. Outside those specific conditions, cargo is the only route, regardless of how short the flight itself might look on a map.
Species and seasonal restrictions
| Restriction | Detail |
|---|---|
| Certain cat and dog breeds | Import bans apply in some destination countries, independent of Emirates' own policy |
| Birds via Dubai, 1 May to 30 September | No birds accepted for transit through Dubai as checked baggage or cargo, except some falcons |
| CITES-listed species generally | Require valid export/import permits regardless of season |
| Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds | Many carriers restrict or refuse these breeds for cargo travel on health grounds |
The May-to-September bird restriction through Dubai is a fixed seasonal rule tied to extreme summer heat on the ground, when animals waiting on the tarmac or in unpressurised holding areas face real welfare and safety risk. It applies to transit through Dubai specifically, so a bird travelling on a different routing entirely may not be affected the same way.
What you need to arrange before booking
| Step | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Contact Emirates or a pet relocation agent early | Cargo space and documentation take time to arrange, not something settled the week before travel |
| Confirm destination country import rules | Some countries require quarantine, blood titre tests, or months of advance paperwork |
| Check breed-specific restrictions | Some breeds face outright bans on certain routes regardless of health certification |
| Arrange an IATA-compliant travel crate | Cargo carriers require crates meeting specific size and ventilation standards |
| Book well ahead of departure | Pet cargo space is limited and does not scale with passenger demand on the same flight |
Passengers are advised, in Emirates' own guidance, to get in touch well before the travel date to confirm exactly what permits, vaccinations or tests the destination country requires. This is not a formality — a missing certificate or an expired test result at the point of departure can mean the animal simply doesn't travel on the planned date, regardless of how the human passengers' tickets are arranged.
Falcons: the one animal Emirates treats differently
Falconry is a significant part of Gulf culture, and Emirates' pet policy reflects that with a route-specific carve-out most airlines don't have. Falcons travelling between Dubai and certain Pakistani destinations can, depending on the specific route and documentation, travel outside the general cargo-only rule that applies to every other bird species. This exception exists because of established regional demand from falconers rather than any general softening of Emirates' animal-transport rules — it does not extend to other bird species or other routes.
Service and emotional support animals
Emirates' cabin exception is limited to guide dogs for visually impaired passengers under recognised assistance-dog standards. It does not extend to emotional support animals or general service animals for other disabilities in the way some US carriers historically allowed before regulatory changes tightened those rules. A passenger requiring an assistance animal beyond a guide dog for visual impairment should contact Emirates directly, well ahead of travel, to establish what documentation and arrangements, if any, apply to their specific situation.
Where Airlaza can help with pet travel arrangements
Booking Business or First class flights around a pet's cargo travel schedule — matching your own flight to the same routing and timing as the animal's cargo booking — is easier to coordinate as a single conversation than as two separate processes. Airlaza can help align your ticket with the practical realities of your pet's cargo arrangements when we issue your booking; call +1-888-890-4009 to talk through the timeline before you commit to travel dates.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring my dog or cat in the cabin on an Emirates flight?
No. Emirates does not permit pets in the passenger cabin under any circumstances, aside from guide dogs for visually impaired travellers. There is no carrier-under-the-seat option regardless of the animal's size, so any dog or cat must travel through Emirates' cargo process instead.
How do I book cargo transport for my pet on Emirates?
Pet cargo is arranged through Emirates SkyCargo or a licensed pet relocation agent, not through the standard passenger booking. This needs to start well before your travel date, since documentation, permits and crate requirements take time to confirm and cargo space is limited compared with passenger seating.
Can my pet travel as checked baggage instead of cargo?
Only under specific conditions: the journey must start in Dubai, the destination country must allow animals to enter as excess baggage, and the total journey time including transit must stay under 17 hours. Falcons, cats, dogs and pet birds can qualify, but outside those conditions cargo is the only option.
Why can't birds transit through Dubai in summer?
Emirates does not accept birds, aside from some falcons, for transit through Dubai as checked baggage or cargo between 1 May and 30 September. The restriction exists because of extreme summer heat risks to animals during ground handling and holding, and it applies specifically to the Dubai transit window.
Does Emirates allow emotional support animals in the cabin?
No. Emirates' cabin exception covers guide dogs for visually impaired passengers only. Emotional support animals and other assistance animals are not included in that exception, unlike the broader allowances some airlines used to offer. Contact Emirates directly ahead of travel if you require an assistance animal beyond a guide dog.
Are there breed restrictions for pets travelling on Emirates?
Yes, though these often come from destination-country import rules rather than Emirates alone. Certain cat and dog breeds face import bans in some countries regardless of the airline used, and cargo carriers generally apply their own restrictions on snub-nosed breeds for health and safety reasons during transport.
Can falcons travel differently from other birds on Emirates?
Yes. Falcons travelling between Dubai and certain destinations in Pakistan have a specific route exception reflecting established regional falconry travel demand. This does not extend to other bird species or other routes, which remain subject to the general cargo-only rule and the seasonal Dubai transit restriction.
How far ahead should I arrange pet travel with Emirates?
As early as possible. Cargo bookings, import permits, vaccination records and IATA-compliant travel crates all take time to arrange properly, and some destination countries require documentation completed months in advance. Leaving it until close to departure risks the pet missing the intended travel date entirely.
Does Emirates charge the same for pet cargo as excess baggage?
No, pet cargo is priced and booked as freight through Emirates SkyCargo or an agent, which is a different process and cost structure from standard excess baggage fees. Only the narrow Dubai-origin, under-17-hour exception allows certain pets to move under checked-baggage terms instead.
Can the agency help arrange my flight around my pet's cargo travel?
Yes. If the agency issues your ticket, we can help align your own flight dates and routing with your pet's separate cargo booking, so both move on a compatible schedule. Call +1-888-890-4009 to talk through timing before booking your travel dates.
